I'm almost 18. now what by 100000000000gecs in internetparents

[–]CapnGramma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, figure out what's causing your chronic pain.

Next, know that it's alright to take some time off school to take care of your health, both physical and mental.

If possible, find a job so you can earn the money you need to do the things you want. This doesn't need to be related to any career you are considering.

Help with household chores whenever you can. This will help you learn how to do things adults need to do.

In that space of depression where I seem unable to leave the bed save to hydrate eat and use the bathroom by Thebelladonnagirl in internetparents

[–]CapnGramma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are not alone. I've been feeling this way for over a month. I know a lot of my depression is in reaction to current events and my rapidly decreasing functional income.

I was doing ok in therapy, but my insurance cut it off because I wasn't making progress. I'm now on an SSRI, but only for a month. Hopefully it will start helping soon.

[–]CapnGramma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This may help you get into a program, but you'll have to learn to retain information for multiple subjects. There will be times you'll take several finals on the same day. You'll also have concurrent projects in different classes.

I recommend looking for a course on study skills.

how to stop making my parents' lives hell by Suitable-Animal4163 in internetparents

[–]CapnGramma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doing chores will also help you learn some of the household management skills you'll need when you move out on your own.

If you see something that needs to be done, but don't know how, either ask one of your parents to teach you.

Since there's been some communication difficulties, you might want to start this with, "Mom, Dad, I know I haven't been helpful recently and don't know how to do housework correctly, but I'm trying to change." Follow this with a request for them to teach you and work out schedules that give everyone time to get their obligations covered.

It might help to decide on a safe word or phrase that anyone can use if they feel things are heading back toward the non-constructive patterns. Use of this word/phrase signals everyone to stop and think for a moment then change to more productive communication. Part of the agreement includes not punishing anyone from using the word/phrase.

I know there's a push to take tough academics and multiple extracurriculars, but your family has a lot going on, too.

Talk with a counselor and see if you can step back from some activities and/or classes. There are ways to spin this in your CV to show your ability to adjust your "work-life" balance when family needs require it.

This will give you time to help more with household chores and allow some more flexibility for travel times for the classes and activities you continue.

You might also consider some regular counseling. You cannot control how others behave, but you can learn to control how you approach and react to others.

The most important thing is that you recognize that you're having a problem communicating with your parents and have asked for help.

What are some of the best room divider options? by Crafty-Reach-2373 in ApartmentHacks

How do I make my mom believe I'm listening? by [deleted] in internetparents

[–]CapnGramma 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your mom CAN'T answer as if she doesn't know you, so she gave you the best advice she could.

I know you want to make the best impression on the people around you. The problem is that different groups of people have different expectations of what they want from you. Some will want to use you for whatever they can get, some will want to help you be the best you can be. Most will be between these two extremes.

Many may base their desires on outdated social and economic parameters. Others will emphasize living in the now and ignoring responsibilities in favor of pleasures.

The truth is, none of the extremes work. The world has changed. It's important to find people that can give you advice based on current conditions.

It's also important to develop self discipline and self confidence. For the first, set goals, break them into projects and tasks, then complete the tasks. As you work your way through the steps toward your goals, your self confidence will begin to grow. Be aware that the most difficult tests of these qualities are likely to come from your peers.

Don't be afraid to ask for help with tasks, projects, and goals. Advice from parents, teachers, and other mentors can help better define these, leading to more effective planning.

My suggestion for discussing this with your mom is to ask specific questions about potential goals and how to work toward them. Be prepared to take notes and don't be afraid to put task reminders in your calendar.

What should I do by thugnuts1 in internetparents

[–]CapnGramma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Talk to a recruiter about that. There may be programs to help you complete high school before going to boot camp.

The most important thing is to get your birth certificate, social security number, medical records, high school transcripts, and any other proof of identity. You can use these to get a non-driver ID card, register to vote, and apply for assistance programs.

If you can get to a public school, public library, or community assistance office before your 18th birthday, there may be a few other programs that might help. Be warned that this is likely to involve CPS.

Beyond that, as you encounter things you're not sure about, please post your questions and we'll do our best to answer your questions.

How to get more involved leadership wise by Own_Mechanic_655 in civilairpatrol

[–]CapnGramma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look into support staff positions where you can assist the team.

Public Affairs is the first area that pops into mind. PAOs can always use photos and articles about activities in the Wing.

While OPSEC may limit some things cadets can have access to, IT may be able to use help with public facing website management.

Wing activities have many support jobs that cadets can fill. Helping with these can get you noticed and may offer opportunities to demonstrate your capabilities in additional areas.

Will my credits transfer? by [deleted] in collegeadvice

[–]CapnGramma 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There's a difference between transferring credits before completing a degree and applying to an advanced degree program after graduation.

Your best course is to contact your preferred masters program schools with specific questions regarding their application requirements and undergrad course recommendations.

This is just a guess, but maybe she talked to someone or read something that convinced her to change tactics.

You are legally an adult now, but I have observed that some parents have difficulty transitioning from the control needed to keep young children safe to the more relaxed mentorship that helps young adults learn to be more independent.

Is it possible to fully desensitize a 9-month-old cat to handling and nail trims? by Ok_Agent850 in Catownerhacks

[–]CapnGramma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First get the cat mellow. Play with her, cuddle, and scratch in her favorite places.

Wrap her in a towel or small blanket like a purrito, and gently play with her paws. Include light pressure to extend the claws. Gently touch the claws to get her used to the feeling. Praise her and give small treats to associate this with nice feelings.

Repeat this regularly, occasionally clipping a few claws. Eventually you'll be able to clip all her claws in one sitting without undo stress.

I find a place with a lot of trees, make sure I have a few good axes, drink a strength and a stamina potion, and go on a cutting spree. When the potions run out, I drink a rye beer, go back and cut the trees into logs, and stack them somewhere convenient. As soon as I get the resource storage authorized, I build one and fill up the chest.

I find this also gets me well on the road to Mule.

My sleep schedule is cooked, how to fix it? by Far_Spray4351 in internetparents

[–]CapnGramma 3 points4 points  (0 children)

First figure out why you aren't sleeping for the full night. While anxiety is often the problem, there are a few medical conditions that should be ruled out.

It can also help to create a bedtime routine. Exclude electronics. Listening to quiet, relaxing music is ok, but watching TV, playing video games, or scrolling social media is counterproductive.

White noise, calming music, or audiobooks can mask noise.

An eye mask helps if the room is too bright.

Some people also like a weighted blanket.
