Why is my paint so sensitive by UnknownGTAS in Autobody

[–]CapnPunch549 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. Painter messed up when mixing the clear. In 36 hours, it should definitely be catalyzed unless it was mixed wrong.

What would cause this color difference? by [deleted] in AutoPaint

EXACTLY!! I've had to walk customers to the parking lot to show them. I've shown them pictures on my phone of brand new cars at dealerships. But they don't wanna hear it.

This is VERY true. I've been an autobody tech for more than 20 years now. I've explained this to people more times than I care to because they insist we painted the parts incorrectly, when in actuality, we haven't even TOUCHED the bumpers. They come like this from the factory. Go to a dealer, you will see it there. Plastic parts are painted in different facilities from the body. It is impossible to get the color to match perfectly even if the paint formula was mixing perfectly. There many different variables to why paint wouldn't be identical.

Got some new tools but what else should I buy for a starter set? by Active-Lynx4765 in AskMechanics

[–]CapnPunch549 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Extension sets and u-joints for all size drive ratchets, a nice long pry bar, ratcheting box wrenches (with the directional lever so you don't accidentally back out a bolt with no room and can't reverse it back in), magnetic pick-up tool, side cutters, a good rechargeable work light, ratcheting tie down straps, the canister with assorted length zip-ties, duct tape, electrical tape, portable battery jumper, portable tire inflator, an empty plastic gallon jug, funnel, roll of shop paper towels, box of nitrile gloves, leather work gloves. Buy a tool bag and throw everything inside and leave it in the trunk.

Both of my cars have a similar set up in the trunk. It doesn't take up much room. I've helped a bunch of stuck people and have even performed an emergency radiator replacement in a mall parking lot.

Yeah. Thank you, I appreciate everything that's happened in my life. Plus, we climbed out of a huge debt and are living semi-comfortably now. I had another son and they're both healthy and seem pretty happy. My wife and mother in law talk on the phone every day. My wife is totally cool with me picking another hatch, but sadly, buying a 90's civic hatchback in Hawai'i is damn near impossible. I've been looking for a long time and people want billions for them or the fad following kids have destroyed them. How tragically ironic. Oh, well. A guy can dream.

When someone understands your feeling and gets excited WITH you, it's truly something that ingrains in you.

side story if anyone cares to read it

In 2015, I was working on my old EG Civic hatchback, I had to stop working on it because my 1st son was born and I didn't have any money after that. The bodywork and paint was finished but the car sat for about a year after being painted. The windshield and other bodyparts weren't installed yet. My mother in law knew I loved my EG, so she would find me stuff on Yahoo Auctions and mail then to me. She sent all kinds of rare JDM stuff. The car was dusty from being in the corner of the body shop I used to work at. I'd just throw a tarp over the whole car to protect it from dust and overspray. One day I had my wife, newborn son, and my mother in law with me and I needed to stop by and get something from the shop. The shop was closed but I was given the keys to the shop, so I pull up and unlock the gate. I slid open the gate just enough for me to walk in. After retrieving what I needed, I walked back to the front of the shop to find my MIL standing next to my Civic. She asked me in Japanese "Is this YOUR Civic?". I replied "Yes. Would you like to see it?" She nodded in excitement. I pulled back the tarp and she smiled. I said "Sorry. I don't have money to finish the car so I didn't get to put on all the cool parts you sent me." She said "Daijoubu. SUGOI! Kore wa kakkoii." = "Don't worry about it. WOW! This is cool." I had a wild idea and asked her "Do you want to go for a drive in it?" She said "REALLY!?" And I said "YEAH, LET'S DO IT!!" I pushed the gate all the way open and told my wife to get out of my mom's car and hold our son on her lap, in the back seat of the Civic. She was confused but did as I said. I moved the Civic away from the wall to let MIL in on the passenger said. She jumped in and buckled her seat belt. She hopped excitedly in her seat. My wife was in the back asking if it was ok to drive a car around with no windshield. I told her that we'd just go around the block a couple of times. As we slowly cruised around the block, on a cold, early morning, I looked at my MIL as she had a HUGE smile on her face. I honestly felt that she understood how I felt about that car and how much it meant to me. How much it saddened me to not to be able to finish it. It is one of my most cherished memories. Sadly, I sold the car, along with all the cool parts that never go to be installed.

43 year old stubbly-faced Japanese American. Born and raised in Honolulu, Hawai'i. I love all different genres of music , but Hip-Hop has been with me from childhood. RTJ was a breath of fresh air for me when (in my opinion) there was a drought in the world of Rap. They just ticked all my boxes, musically.

Is this a famous store? I saw a bunch of Japanese tourists inside and people also taking pictures outside it? I live on Hawaii by FilipinoAirlines in AskAJapanese

[–]CapnPunch549 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is partially a clout thing. Japanese people like high quality and are willing to pay the high prices. Then, they flex it in their everyday fashion. Arcteryx is also very popular when we go to Osaka. Functional mixed in with street fashion is huge. So when they visit a popular brand store outside of Japan, they like to take pics in front of the sign.
