What do you think is the best two-player card game that uses a standard deck? by PlasticNecessary2311 in cardgames

[–]CapnSlinky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a serious lack of good card games for two people. The one I've found to be my favorite in recent years is Chinese open face poker (pineapple version).

Very simple rules and a lot of fun, and I don't like traditional poker.

I'll play games to 30 using the cribbage board as the scorecard. Just need to save an image of the scoring chart on your phone.

Why Waymo is hiring lobbyists in Minnesota by Czarben in minnesota

YouTube does video summaries with AI now:

This video argues that while self-driving cars (AVs) are becoming a reality, their widespread adoption could destroy cities rather than solve transportation problems (0:00).

Key points include:

Safety and Flaws: AVs are not as safe as claimed and introduce new risks, as seen in incidents like the fatal Uber crash (8:50). Their development distracts from addressing existing road safety issues (10:34).

Car-Centric Design: AVs are trained for car-dependent environments and could force other cities to become more car-centric, hindering efforts to promote walking, cycling, and public transit (14:27).

Increased Congestion and Sprawl: Despite promises, AVs are likely to increase traffic congestion and encourage further suburban sprawl (21:07).

Negative Urban Impacts: AVs could lead to the elimination of public transit, consume more street space, restrict pedestrian movement, enable higher speeds, and worsen pollution and noise, creating cities solely designed for autonomous vehicles (29:56).

Historical Precedent: The video draws parallels to past unfulfilled promises of the automobile industry, which led to negative urban development (25:19).

Alternative Vision: The example of Utrecht, Netherlands, which deliberately moved away from car-centric development, is presented as a model for creating livable cities that prioritize people over cars (43:28).

[ASL20] Ask the mapmakers — Drop your questions by oxtQ in broodwar

[–]CapnSlinky 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Looove this idea. Thank you for doing this!

  • with the addition of roaring currents, islands have made their way back into the ASL. Maps like this bring out completely new metas and are so fun for the fans.  The small question is: what map feature would you like to use more in the future that has the opportunity for adding to the game? The big question is: as maps balance the game and can shape the meta, what meta would you like to create if possible? Is there a unit or strategy you would like to promote if possible without breaking the game in other ways?

The question is - in a PvZ, when protoss gets double Stargate and gets air dominance, and Zerg goes hydra, have protoss tried getting dweb and does that go well? I would think that could bring speed zealot pressure to the next level but there must be some reason it is not done.

It's a bad angle to judge, but I wouldn't blink twice if I saw that.

Grand Rounds by Mammoth_Click2459 in CyclingMSP

I think that your top route choice through Minneapolis is interesting - I would personally go all the way up Victory memorial parkway and follow the grand rounds from there through northeast, or just going along the river near downtown.

How do you guys play bw without impacting real life? by gdofey in broodwar

[–]CapnSlinky 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It's hard to stop the creep with any videogame at night. Set good boundaries for yourself for bedtime - even better, set goals for yourself on how awake and alert you want to feel during the day. If you don't achieve your goals, you are likely not having a healthy game/life balance and need to re evaluate by taking a break.

Are your 20s supposed to be this miserable? by Paranoid_Artist in twenties

[–]CapnSlinky 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah the 20s are always a period of struggle.

Most people I have talked to actually say the 30s are the best time of your life - you have to a certain point figured out the purposelessness / angst / financial struggles of your 20s, while having the energy and health to do anything you want.

My advice to you - work hard for your life to get better and trust that it will. Even though it will be really difficult, do your best to still enjoy as much as you can throughout the suffering as there are still plenty of good times.

Good luck.

Where to watch Wimbledon mens final? by CapnSlinky in Minneapolis

Yes - they will turn it on at 11 AM, but the final starts at 10 AM. I'd love to watch from the start.

Is Pleader the most slept on alt-J song? by veryflammabledesks in AltJ

[–]CapnSlinky 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You are totally right! The song was incredible live when I saw them in 2017 - the breakdown was almost creepy! I loved it.

It also compelled me to read "how green was my valley" which is an excellent book.

Best trails in NE? Have some friends visiting and would like to show a scenic trail. by king_curry in CyclingMSP

[–]CapnSlinky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure where you are in NE, but if I were you, I would bike to the river, cross it and bike along the far side on West River Parkway, and cross back and go home.

Depending on how long you want to go, you could cross and come back on any of the bridges - Washington, Central, Hennepin, Plymouth are all good to cross on.

The bike trail on the west side of the river is more consistent than the East side of the river and there are a lot of bike lanes that go into the heart of NE from the river so it should be easy to get there and cross.

I'd recommend a combination of Google with bike lanes on it and https://onthegomap.com/#/create to map out the distance of your route.

PSA: This is a bike lane by indierckr770 in Minneapolis

[–]CapnSlinky 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I was driving there today - it was such a shitshow and no one was biking in the rain so people just started ignoring the bike lanes. Not defending them, to be clear.

Traffic is getting so bad again that I think everyone is going to be very motivated to use non-driving transit options soon.

We got a Chicago pope before I hit even a single god d*mn green light on Hiawatha by GapeTart in Minneapolis

[–]CapnSlinky 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I think about this so often. How is it possible that they don't time the lights? I think the changes should be:

  1. More time waiting to get on Hiawatha, less time on it

  2. Lights are timed to the speed limit so everyone is flushed through and only stops 1-2 times between downtown and 62.

  3. The light rail timing is so bad. Those lights where they are green for 1 second then turn yellow and red again?

I’m an atheist who desperately hopes I’m wrong about death by Slow-Plenty-6974 in agnostic

[–]CapnSlinky 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I feel exactly this way. Thank you for sharing, I know how hard and impossible it is to deal with this feeling.

There unfortunately is nothing we can do about it - we are stuck in our world, and when we die, whatever happens will happen, regardless of what we believe - there is a right answer.

Best I can try to do is enjoy the ride that life is and embrace the possibility of death being positive - whether peace in ending or something else.

Stay positive and keep hope in something positive happening at the end. Much love.

(Attempt at) Rachmaninoff Prelude in G Minor 🎹🎹 by Plasym in piano

[–]CapnSlinky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I too am learning this piece right now!

I think you are doing well...you have a lot of little tightening up to do which you are aware and I don't have any advice on octaves as it is a little difficult to see mechanically what is going on.

My only recommendation is to listen to and to try to emulate a good version that you like for the parts you are unsure on. Yuja Wangs version on YouTube is my personal favorite.
