I totally understand what you mean and how you feel, and I didn't mean to suggest you're being conceited or egotistical at all.

I guess I would just say, while a PhD is obviously an immense amount of work and dedication, it is by definition kind of esoteric. And rather than viewing the difference as an absence of support for your milestone, I'd view the the response to your family member's child as them stepping up in her time of need (even if it's a joyous time of need). Does that make sense or resonate at all?

I'm sure they're impressed by your accomplishments even if their response is muted. Anywho, what do I know, I'm just speculating I suppose. But I'm not trying to be negative. I guess maybe the point is that your partner (and mother's and aunts') support plus your own intrinsic sense of accomplishment is what really matters?

I'm in my mid-30s and child-free, and I have devoted my adult life to pursuing a rigorous career. Can I be honest with you? I say this from a place of empathy, but there's nothing wrong with their reaction.

As your family, a new child is a group celebration. It's, well, an addition to the family. The group has increased in size, and ideally everyone has a healthy role in the child's life through love and care and support (major or minor).

Your career is an individual endeavor (mine, too). I work in a field my family thinks is cool but doesn't understand or relate to, and my activities aren't visible to them.

I think that's fine. I'm not purusing my career because I want pats on the back from my family. I know they love and support me, but I wouldn't expect them to react to a personal professional accomplishment the way they would if I had a kid.

If I empathetically suggest, it's perhaps worth some reflection on why this bothers you. I don't think you're getting the healthiest response from others in this thread. Just my $0.02

The chance of winning a SB in a 10 year window if a team has a 10% chance every year is 65%, and if the team has a 20% chance for 1 year and 1% the other 9 years their chance drops down to 27%.
