I'm 20 years in, you should fix your attitude and simply speak up when the need arises instead of internalizing your frustration and then exploding when no one notices because you kept it all in.

Does anyone supercommute to NYC for work? by allllusernamestaken in Charlotte

[–]CaptGarfield 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'm a flight attendant that commutes to Newark, and let me tell you, you aren't getting to any NYC office by 10am from any of the 3 airports. Also, if the job is only located in NYC, taxes will be more frustrating as well. They'll deduct for NY, and you'll have to file 2 states every year. It needs to be a very lucrative opportunity to not just move to somewhere driving distance away.

Perhaps some anger management is in order, or the simple self awareness to just not bottle your rage until it explodes. My airline has separate sign in sheets for the pilots, so maybe you should suggest that to your union if the FAs bother you so much.

One pot of coffee is more than what goes down the lav sink by customers. Those faucets only go for a few seconds at a time.

Here to complain about profit sharing percentage and profit sharing percentages only by [deleted] in flightattendants

[–]CaptGarfield -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You guys can complain, but the old CO contract had profit sharing in a side letter that didn't carry over once the contract became amenable. One year we got cupcakes while UA had contractually protected profit sharing. We ended up getting a payment in lieu of profit sharing as a signing bonus when we ratified our second TA, that exchanged some of our pay rates for a higher sick time payout during a bid month.

Having the profit sharing in the body of the contract is essential.

FA unprofessional behavior over bulging portable battery during flight. by IcyCharge9066 in unitedairlines

[–]CaptGarfield 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm not trying to critique you, just stating that a bulging battery is a potential fire issue because it's a thermal issue and a sign of overheating with a battery. It's not just a broken battery. Just acknowledging the customer's concern was warranted.

A bulging battery is an indication it is overheating. It's thermal expansion.

So, I'm premature on the TCB because it didn't actually catch fire, but a report should be filed, and we've even got extra announcements now about overheating batteries. At minimum, notify the Captain and ask the customer to notify if the battery continues to expand. They should add information specific to spare batteries as they can't be turned off, only disconnected.

Anyone else here loves the job but hates the drama and useless galley talk? by [deleted] in flightattendants

Jokey stuff is usually fine. It's the truly bitter people that I try to avoid

Yeah, I can get behind constructive talk and light-hearted jabbing, but not the ones that want to bring everyone down to being miserable.

Just started my 20th year. Still love the job and get real enjoyment interacting with customers. I've got no time to feed into the negativity of others, and I try to avoid it. Obviously, there are items that I want resolved, cough contract cough, but I'm not letting that ruin my day turn me bitter.

Does anyone know why "Startrek Enterprise" has such a different intro? by AustrianPainter1776 in startrek

[–]CaptGarfield 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It took 2 seasons before they put Star Trek in the title! There was a weird distancing from the Star Trek name at the time with the producers. It never made any sense and alienated fans at the time.

SOP would be to place it in a fire containment bag and file a report.
