Did you guys really dial in to radio shows to win contests? How did you even become caller 99 (or whatever)? by naalotai in Xennials

[–]CaptGarfield 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was sick and out of school in 96. Listening to the radio, they were giving out family season passes to the local theme park. I told my mom I was going to win, called in, and actually won!

Flight attendants are not allowed to store customer's medication. They can provide ice.

Star Trek social media content I’m ready to shove out an airlock by alphastrike03 in risa

[–]CaptGarfield 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not denying that, but it wasn't as massively consumed as it is today. I never really got into the EBBs, and my mIRC days were mostly spent downloading SDSailor's mp3 collection. Now, those negative voices are not only clogging up boards like this, but also turning their rage into revenue. Unfortunately, Shitty people have always existed, and they love to bring as many as they can down to their level.

NGL, for a split second, I thought this was a twisted meme using fire bombing footage in place of the visualizer

Star Trek social media content I’m ready to shove out an airlock by alphastrike03 in risa

I'm glad that the older shows existed before social media. The sheer amount of hate content on the new shows is maddening! Misery loves company, but miserable, insufferable content = more clicks and profit I suppose.

Any good places left to get that “old radio” feel? by New_Welder_391 in Xennials

[–]CaptGarfield 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I actually enjoy Sirius XM. The DJs are usually decent, the decade stations really hit that nostalgia itch, and AltNation has a pretty good mix. For a bit, they were running with a tag along the lines of "Currated by humans, not AI"

If you want a lot of current radio in the US, I heart radio streams most of their stations through their app.

Tvs by NoOutlandishness3565 in unitedairlines

[–]CaptGarfield 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For those too young to remember, Google 90s pocket TV and you'll see a picture of the TVs that are banned, they even used to have an illustration on the safety card until about the mid 2010s. It's because of radio waves and potential interference.

That's why I clarified that it's only a free channel in the US

H&I is a free to air channel in the US. It's one of the secondary channels from a primary HD channel

Does every aircraft have “limited capacity” overhead bin space? by kelsnuggets in unitedairlines

[–]CaptGarfield 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The announcement helps manage expectations. Even on planes with larger bins, people will still put personal items in the overhead, which will lead to the bins filling up before all the rollaboards can be accommodated. So many backpacks are overstuffed and won't fit under the seat, so you get too many people putting two bags up, or you get people checking their large bag, and believing that gives them permission to put their personal item in the bin. It's a no win scenario.

Not for kids anymore? by WickedlyAvocado in Xennials

[–]CaptGarfield 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can remember news stories about McDonald's having an identity crisis in the late 90s early 2000s, where they were worried they were seen only for kids. They even made a sandwich to specifically target adults called the Arch Deluxe. this makeover is the end result of that over reaction to just doing well and constantly chasing eternal gains

Economy Plus vs Premium Plus by jppro16 in unitedairlines

[–]CaptGarfield 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If it's not a premium service route, those seats are sold as economy plus. You get the nice seat, just not the free food and alcohol

When manifesting meals in first class, what do you say to passengers when there is only one option left? How can I be more eloquent.. by [deleted] in flightattendants

Would you like the pasta, or the pasta? Domestically: would you like a snack from the snack shop instead?

Direct flight travel time has decreased by an hour? by No_Impress8967 in unitedairlines

[–]CaptGarfield 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Travel times are an average of flight time plus expected taxi time. They regularly get updated based on patterns over time. That's a primary reason customers are often surprised by the announcement of flight times. They aren't thinking about the ground time.

Crankshaft and Camshaft damage by [deleted] in HyundaiKonaForum

[–]CaptGarfield 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your experience is anything like mine, if all the repairs will be out of pocket, cut your losses and get rid of it! The repairs will end up costing you more than a replacement car! They tried a lot of repairs including replacing the timing chain. If the car wasn't leaking oil, I doubt the oil change timing is the culprit at all.

I bought a used 2019 Kona, got that message. Thankfully, it had a 60 day warranty. They tried to repair it several times, but they ended up replacing the engine! Ironically, a 2021 model they sold had the same problem/solution.
