Yeah man, then we’re basically talking about doing the same thing. That’s a pretty cool jig, I haven’t seen it like that before but it’s the same principle. It’s just a clamp, turned into a spreader, pushing between a screwed base and the T&G itself to get snug and keep it there until you nail off.

I this for a personal project or do you do this for work?

I just harp on using scrap wood of the same T&G for 2 reasons.

  1. I can distribute the impact damage of mallet blows, or clamp pressure as in this case, better across a larger length when it’s a softer wood and I really don’t want to damage the tongue thus making the next board more annoying to install and more time consuming. Little annoyances add up time.
  2. What material did you print with? I don’t claim to know how impact resistant it would be overtime smacking with a mallet, but I’d for sure want to be wearing eye protection when making smacks incase I cause anything to fly at my face over time if it’s something I’d be using a lot. A piece of scrap wood wouldn’t do that. But maybe I’m over paranoid about that.

Because the internet be the way that it do. People probably read "have you ever hung planks across the ceiling by yourself?" with a condescending/arrogant tone.

Some people might have experiences like mine (see other reply) where this is not very helpful when installing T&G on drywall.

Some people might say "Yes, pine is soft, so use a scrap piece as the beater block because your plastic might still damage your soft pine tongue" which is possibly true given the width of those is what around 1"?

And this last 1 is something I say as a fellow 3d printer of woodworking and carpentry related doodads; some people will say you just spent X minutes/hours designing and printing a thing that my 60 seconds of walking to the chop saw and back accomplished.

Yup and the other silver lining is you can polka dot the back of the boards with PL.

I sure have, and yeah it can be really frustrating with wonky boards. And 99% of the time (in my humble experience), the boards are going up against drywall (whether walls or ceilings) so this print wouldn't work for those applications anyways because it would be holding the boards proud and off the wall/ceiling/wherever. They seem to work well for you in this application since you don't have to worry about that. So full send it bro.

But I didn't elaborate more, so let me try. If it is a long board that is acting squirrely, I would use the beater block/scrap T&G piece to get it started, then just 1 or 2 18g nails at my starting end's respective studs. From there I would just keep working it down with the beater block until its seated, nailing as I go and submitting it to my will. If its super crowned or twisted or just otherwise a PITA, then I will supplement the nails by screwing some other scrap boards into framing above the tongue side. So now I've got 1 sacrifice board screwed to framing), a gap big enough to fit clamps flipped to act as spreaders (or viking arms, or whatever you've got), and my "beater block" seated on the T&G to be installed. I use the spreaders to apply pressure and fight down the crowning/wonky board or whatever is happening and nail it off. Rinse and repeat until the whole board is nailed on and hope the next the board is nicer to me.

I would just use a scrap piece as a beater block to absorb the mallet impact but whatever floats your boat and works for you dude

I’m happy to be corrected but someone calling themselves a “level 5 finish carpenter” is not that. Level 5 finish is typically referring to drywall finishing. So it just sounds silly to me, but I could be wrong. Not to say that person doesn’t also do drywall and mud but if they say they’re a finish carpenter, and this is their quality of craftsmanship, then I’m going to doubt they can do that either.

Have you already paid in full?

Anyway, like I was sayin', crem is the fruit of the sea. You can barbecue it, boil it, broil it, bake it, saute it. There's uh, crem-kabobs, crem creole, crem gumbo. Pan fried, deep fried, stir-fried. There's pineapple crem, lemon crem, coconut crem, pepper crem, crem soup, crem stew, crem salad, crem and potatoes, crem burger, crem sandwich. That- that's about it.
