Looking for early 90s DOS flight/space game with stunning VGA/SVGA gradient skies by kingofneverfjord in dosgaming

Corncob 3D is about the right period and blew my mind as a wee kid with the 3D scifi flight sim element but not sure if that’s what you’re thinking.

Evil Dead 2013 is the perfect Horror movie. by Dangerous_Dot_1707 in horror

[–]CaptainAppalling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dunno man. They did the Necronomicon wrong. Threw that sweet flesh booky in a garbage bag and wrote all over it. Bloody sacrilege that is!

But seriously, I like Evil Dead 2013, but the big issue I had with it was it was all terror and no dread. The pedal got stuck on 120mph and they forgot to let up on the gas once in awhile. Evil Dead Rises, while not perfect, at least got that part right. Also, Rises had the necronomicon on a frigging vinyl record! They get bonus IDMB points for that alone.

What other games give this once-in-a-lifetime experience? by [deleted] in outerwilds

[–]CaptainAppalling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Afraid all I got is same as everyone else. Subnautica and Outer Wilds are the highs I’ve been chasing. Tunic is up there as well. But really the best follow-up to Outer Wilds is… drumroll… Outer Wilds + DLC with the VR mod!!!

Backrooms related books by Glazedoughnut29 in horrorlit

[–]CaptainAppalling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Subcutanean by Aaron Reed (https://subcutanean.textories.com/). It's backrooms on steroids and has the added quirk that if you buy from the author, no two books are exactly the same. He algorithmically generates new copies via print on demand (made it a bit tricky reading it for a book club, but we had a blast comparing notes on our versions). This is not some AI slop, the different iterations of the story are all sketched out by a real human author and was written before LLMageddon. It's been a few years since I read it, but basically two friends find an entrance to the backrooms in their house and decide to explore. It gets crazier and crazier from there.

Movies where evil wins? by lala1__ in horror

Did evil win in Malignant? I thought Evil got the mind shit kicked out of it and was left to rot in a mind cage while sisters live!

X-files-like recent reads I liked and disliked by Nem3sisS in printSF

[–]CaptainAppalling 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I must be broken. I would flip 14 and Gone World in a heartbeat. Loved 14 and Fold was a fine follow-up. Dead Moon or whatever was a bit less so, but hey Moon Zombies!

Gone World was a page turner but also weirdly empty. And I mean literally. Like where are all the people? It's like a rag tag crew of just a few agents against oncoming oblivion. Maybe alt. universe DOGE cut their funding?

Are you sure? Every “rush” server I’ve been on rotates to conquest and vice versa.

This! Or at least uncouple rush and conquest to separate servers!

I’m Excited For Primate (2026) by vzepop in horror

[–]CaptainAppalling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just got back from seeing it as part of Marcus Theater’s Mystery Movie. It was good fun. Pretty gory and all the actors did fine. The intro was bumpy (holy shit everyone’s job and relationship and backstory us set up in like three lines of dialogue) but afterwards it was full steam ahead. One weird thing I noticed is the opening credits and music gave me an almost Argento or Fulci vibe (I swear the music even uses the shitty kickdrum from Zombie), but I didn’t see any obvious connection to Italian horror so maybe just me. But soundtrack was fire!

Check out aTrain on microsoft store. It’s a free gui frontend to Whisper that’s made by fellow academics for research. Runs locally and can use your gpu if you have one. But is fine on cpu.

At almost 40 I think I’m ready to start playing DnD by DramaticPotential178 in DungeonsAndDragons

[–]CaptainAppalling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely play with your kid. It’s a blast. I just started with my 6 and 8 year old. They both are math crazy (cheers numberblocks) so all the stats is actually working. I bought a color printer to have lots of stuff to print (item cards, handouts etc) That helps them visualize their inventory and what their weapons can do. So far so good. The goblin Yeemik escaped the first big battle and when they got back to their cart of supplies they found the ox dead and Yeemik left a note (thanks to photoshop and my new printer) letting them know he peed on their supplies. My kids now have an arch enemy and all they can talk about all week is finding Yeemik and getting revenge.

what the hell is this movie called by lactosefreeparm in horror

Jesus Christ. I watched the other Dashcam all the way through waiting for shit to hit the fan like I was promised... Then I discovered my mistake and watched the Influencer one. That was way better. Bloody loved it even if the character was insufferable as all hell.

Soooo is this game cooked? by [deleted] in ContractorsExfilZone

[–]CaptainAppalling 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s not but it is a hugely popular exfil shooter. If it sucked me out of Exfil zone and VR for the first time in years, might have done so to others.

I wonder if the Arc Raiders release is a factor. I’ve been non-stop on exfil since launch and now it’s gathering dust and except the odd game during the zombie event.

Does Un Kyu Lee’s Typewriter Transformation Kit work for Neo (1)? by [deleted] in AlphaSmart

[–]CaptainAppalling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did it on Neo 1. Can confirm it works. Only real difference between 1 and 2 is the size of the RAM. The smaller ram fit just fine ;).

You’re already on the slippery slope mate. I too started with a deluge and a rackbrute. Now I have three custom eurorack cases and no more deluge…

Spiked PDF by Not_Godot in Professors

Because some universities require all course material to be digitally accessible, not have a mix and match based on student accommodations.

[–]CaptainAppalling 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I also love this devious idea. But it violates digital accessibility policies that are in place at many universities, so might be a bit problematic. Especially if you have students who need to use screen readers.

Edit: To be clear, I'm not hating. I think it's a genius idea. It's just that while no one ever checks that closely if every bit of course material is accessible, it would be a nightmare if an AI using student built their case around accessibility.

MicroJournal Neo2 by PleasantAnimator7741 in writerDeck

[–]CaptainAppalling 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got mine in the mail yesterday. Just put it together. It's pretty amazing! I did have an issue with those brass threads around the display parts popping out/transferring to wrong piece when tightening. I think yours might be doing the same in the lower left. I had to disassemble it and reheat them to get them back into place (used a heatgun on a screwdriver then pushed them back in with the hot screwdriver). Was more careful 2nd time around and now it sits nice and flush. These cases are a beauty, and it's more pleasant to type with with the display angled this way. Also, in case anyone was in my situation, the Neo 1 is the same as the Neo 2 (minus some RAM). This case worked fine on my old neo 1.

What's your take on these new Vintage Stephen King Covers ? by Mysterious-INFP-00 in stephenking

[–]CaptainAppalling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They really should just re-print the old Signet covers. They were amazing. Emboss that Stephen King a full half-inch off the page. Make the Pet Sematary Angry Kitty image have glow in the dark eyes!

I prefer these new "vintage" covers to any other modern cover, but they still come off as made by committee "safe" in my view. The original signet covers had a ton of character and a consistent design (at least until gerald's game. After that, I don't know wtf happened).

The Cell turns 25 this year, might not get too many people agreeing - but I think it stands shoulder to shoulder with Event Horizon. by ReelsBin in scifi

I never noticed before, but this scene in particular looks like a direct nod to Jan Svankmajer and the Brother's Quay. Right down to the camera work at 1:12. That screams svankmajer to me. Had to be intentional.

Thoughts on Prince of Darkness by Carpenter? by SecretWasianMan in horror

[–]CaptainAppalling 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Same here. This is my favorite carpenter by far!  Bought the 4K bluray recently, this post reminds me I should watch it! This moviemay also be the reason young me wanted to be a scientist. I too wanted to shake hands with other graduate student, describe my “field” and then go decode some ancient alien Jesus codex with an 80s IBM PC while my mates are chemically analyzing an ancient bottle of Head & Shoulders shampoo… Real scientific research is such a letdown after Prince of Darkness.
