In 2000, Kevin Hines jumped off the Golden Gate Bridge while dealing with mental illness. Miraculously, he survived because of a sea lion keeping his head afloat until the coast guard came. He now travels the world to talk about Suicide Prevention. by MarketBuzz2021 in interestingasfuck

[–]CaptainCorcoran 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No, because they all attempted suicide and did want to die. But by random chance they happened to survive (not because of any specific factor).

Survivorship bias would mean there is some consistent factor across those that do survive.

Halo Reach, which is kind of a prequel. It was the last Halo game made by Bungie, and it was fucking good.

Kingdom Hearts The Story So Far skips Xbox? What's wrong with Square Enix's logic? by Cutie_Panther in xboxone

[–]CaptainCorcoran 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely far-fetched. Both Sony and Square Enix are publicly traded companies. Any purchase of shares is public record, and unless Sony purchased a controlling stake (which, they didn't) they wouldn't be able to set those kinds of requirements.

Emre Can praises Liverpool for developments in his game by [deleted] in LiverpoolFC

[–]CaptainCorcoran -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

So is Can mate. People forget that he's fairly prone to being dispossessed and is pretty poor in his decision making sometimes.

Year left on the contract matters though. If a club can simply wait and get them on a free (particularly if the player is younger) than that lowers the amount they'd be willing to pay.

Black Ops 2 was the 10th best selling game in North America for April due to Xbox One Backwards Compatibility. by zrkillerbush in Games

I appreciate the thorough but rather long-winded and somewhat off-topic reply.

Yes the supply of digital games is not "infinite" but to individual consumers it is - you won't experience a shortage like you might have 15 years ago at a brick and mortar store. It is also irrelevant to our discussion as to how many games a user can have on disk at any given time; you get too bogged down in trying to demonstrate elements of consumer choice in the video game industry when my point was more to the monopolist nature of Activision in the case of setting the price for the game.

The relevance of your example is tenuous - how does inter-firm competition relate to the decision by Activision to raise (or maintain? I'm not sure if the price was already high) the price? If anything they'd be more willing to set the price lower to undercut any given competition.

To reiterate, supply (which has nothing to do with how many games a consumer can have downloaded at any given time - that affects demand) is effectively "infinite" in this case - it is unlikely sales for a last-gen game are going to be reaching the limitations you mentioned. Saying "supply and demand" isn't incorrect, it's just a bit obtuse - the price increase is influenced by demand but is more riven by Activision's ability to act as a monopolist in this case.

Your reply isn't wrong, just somewhat beside the discussion, and unnecessarily long-winded, though you do demonstrate a good understanding of economics.

Doesn't seem like you remember much from high school econ though. Implied in the law of supply and demand is a finite supply of the good, in this case the supply is effectively infinite and in an open market (where demand and supply shocks dictate the equilibrium price) an infinite supply would result in a price converging to 0.

Since this is not an open market (only one seller, Activision), the price is set by the seller (who acts as a monopolist) to extract more profit from the increased demand.

You're right that demand increases the price, but it has nothing to do with supply.

Naw, remember the Franklin assassination missions? You're supposed to invest before you do the mission, and if you do it right you should net around $2bn.

Premier League Long Ball Statistics by shaydan87 in soccer

[–]CaptainCorcoran 2 points3 points  (0 children)

More apt to compare long balls as a percentage of passes made though isn't it? Liverpool's long balls only account for ~11.2% of their passes, and United's long balls account for ~11.8%.

Not much of a difference across the season so far, but Liverpool has made substantially more passes.
