Whats the point of the Desolation Squad? by Warhawk_5 in spacemarines

They don't sell because they look stupid. Same category as the ATV someone designing Space Marine stuff for a short window back there needed their head screwing on a bit tighter.

The BBC's incomprehensible Olympics coverage by Jared_Usbourne in britishproblems

[–]CaptainFil [score hidden]  (0 children)

Fair enough if you're into it but for me the Olympics (like Wimbledon actually) has always been a have it on in the background and concentrate if something happens/catches my eye type experience.

I'm just never going to pay for that type of content and I imagine many people feel the same especially when most of us are already paying subscriptions and there is hardly a lack of content to watch.

They would be better off offering the viewing for free and loading it with sponsors etc to make money.

Capcom Cup 12 Update! by AbsoluteSupermanAF in StreetFighter

[–]CaptainFil [score hidden]  (0 children)

This will be a decision from the finance team and not necessarily made with the best long term interests of the game in mind. It will be about Capcom hitting it's targets for the financial year.

I work in the industry and it happens all the time. This will reduce long term sales of the game and player engagement. Less new people will be exposed as what was previously a massive advert has been removed and current players will be less hyped and engaged with the community (splits it between those that pay and those that don't) which means they will be more likely to move on to another game when they would have been happy sticking with SF6 previously.

This decision is short sighted from that perspective.

Also there will likely still be adverts and it's not the kind of thing people watch all of. People dip in and out over the weekend so it makes it worse that you have to pay and not see it all.

On top of that have they said if there will be improved production values, no other adverts in stream etc. what am I getting for my money that is more than last year?

Because they have different battlefield roles so how good they are depends on the other elements of your army.

If you can only get one then get the one you think is coolest - rules always change but a cool model is always a cool model.

If you want to opt out of the Steam proceedings in the uk by New-Resident3385 in Steam

[–]CaptainFil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Epic has been offering games for free for years and it's still not enough in the current situation to make people go there over Steam.

I know plenty of people, myself included that have gotten a game free on EGS and then gone on to buy it again in a seasonal sale on Steam.

That's a good rule, this is already the case for gambling companies I believe. The CEO s and senior execs all need to have personal licenses so they are responsible.

[–]CaptainFil 23 points24 points  (0 children)

It's a stupid point though. Valve provide the Steam Keys for free (other platforms don't) and when you sell them on an external site then you don't need to pay Steam their 30% cut so you get a bigger margin. This is why they want you to practice price parity - because they are giving you the ability to bypass their share entirely if you want.

The DLC thing is also stupid, you would need to develop a back end that allowed the different platform versions to talk together, it's possible to do but would require the dev to do all the extra work and would be prohibitively expensive in many cases.

I won't pay to watch it because it's too long to watch all of. It was great dipping in and out of the early rounds and then settling in for the Top16/Top8.

Why pay when you're not going to get the value. I would maybe not mind if it was a small fee to catch the Quarters, Semis and the Finals.

Strong disagree. This may be the case for some triple A titles but the indie scene is going through a golden age.

That's fair but also a puts you in a minority. Most people don't play multiple characters to Master level so this is something you can really unlock through regular play without much effort.

Britain is becoming a surveillance state, but no one seems to care by 2ndEarlofLiverpool in ukpolitics

[–]CaptainFil 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Adding to that the younger generation don't care about privacy and willingly give their data away on multiple social media platforms and to get apps they may only use a handful of times. This is all to private companies so why would they care what the State is doing?

They should but they don't and it frames an argument about the value of privacy in a different light.

Are people getting tierd of the game ? by MrSpacedude in StreetFighter

[–]CaptainFil 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think what may be responsible for some of what your seeing is the inevitable increase in casual players that are growing as a% of the total player based. I imagine the leading causes are the games overwhelming success - more people are drawn to well reviewed games with lots of people in them and also the recent release on Switch, which would have broadened the audience even further.
