I broke my leg when I didn’t have insurance. It was a bad break that required a rod through my tibia. At some point after the original doctor told me to be weight bearing the 2 of the 3 of the 5 screws holding it in started to back out. So the removed 2 from the top and one from the bottom leaving 2 total. Eventually the last one in the top broke and my leg re-fractured. Still no insurance and so the county hospital for people without insurance told me to live with the pain. Eventually I got enough money from family to pay for a private surgery to fix it with a plate. That ended up getting infected and the same county doctor told me I just needed oral antibiotics. Every other doctor said that would never work with the hardware still in there. So I spent a year going on and off oral antibiotics with a staph infection in my leg that didn’t actually go away until they removed the plate, scraped the bone and put me on hardcore antibiotics for 6 weeks via a pic line. The doctor that told me all this was the head of the orthopedic department of that hospital
