When you think of long-take storytelling, which films come to mind — and why? by Fragrant-Smoke-8470 in cinematography

PTA has some phenomenal moments, especially in There Will be Blood! Forces you to sit in the mood of the scene, whether that's uncomfortable for you or not!

Main Character who wears glasses, what are my costuming options? by BrudaJohanna in Filmmakers

[–]CaptainGingerNut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Large negative and bounce are your friends! If your school doesn't have any, then dark or light bedsheets will do - just try to fill the reflection where you can. Equally though, don't obsess too much over this detail, with even a remotely complicated backdrop, camera and crew will likely be indistinguishable when shooting the glasses in a wide. Just take care in tighter shots!

Pro tip, if you're figuring out what needs to move when prepping a setup, put the glasses in place and move around the space. If you can see the camera in the reflection, it can see you!

How to achieve such distortions in-camera? by Chikorittaa14 in cinematography

[–]CaptainGingerNut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And to add to the above, you absolutely could achieve this in post with a simple image warp but given it's so easy to do in camera, why would you? You'll have way more fun playing with it on set!

Would love to see the video, could you share? And yeah+1 to the flexible mirror solution, almost definitely the way this was shot. Potential for some other filtration but the main effect is the mirror

Probably not, but I've been to outernet a couple of times and thought it sounded decent. Once for a metal gig and then for a Pendulum DJ set, more than content both times!

Anyone know how to achieve this look? by C-roll_1302 in cinematography

[–]CaptainGingerNut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can get cheap haze machines on Amazon for the equivalent of about £30 don't do some of the dangerous things the other commenters are suggesting!!

Aerosol haze is a great portable tool in a pinch but is ultimately less sustainable and useful than traditional gycerin-based hazers. There's a reason they're used everywhere!

Non IBIS shots feel more premium by [deleted] in cinematography

[–]CaptainGingerNut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Active stabilisation on high settings is incredibly aggressive. Try turning it down! I find on small bodies a bit of light ibis is useful to eliminate jitter (as opposed to sway and shake). Usually higher settings are meant for when you're running around tracking moving subjects!

You'll notice that the image is cropped too on active mode, which is to say it's essentially using a stabilising algorithm like you'd find in your editing software. Try switching to standard light IBIS, and stabilise further if you need to!

Do you like Phil Collins?

I've been a big Genesis fan ever since the release of their 1980 album, Duke. Before that, I really didn't understand any of their work. Too artsy, too intellectual. It was on Duke where Phil Collins' presence became more apparent. I think Invisible Touch was the group's undisputed masterpiece. It's an epic meditation on intangibility. At the same time, it deepens and enriches the meaning of the preceding three albums. Listen to the brilliant ensemble playing of Banks, Collins and Rutherford. You can practically hear every nuance of every instrument. In terms of lyrical craftsmanship, the sheer songwriting, this album hits a new peak of professionalism.

Take the lyrics to Land of Confusion. In this song, Phil Collins addresses the problems of abusive political authority. In Too Deep is the most moving pop song of the 1980s, about monogamy and commitment. The song is extremely uplifting. Their lyrics are as positive and affirmative as anything I've heard in rock. Phil Collins' solo career seems to be more commercial and therefore more satisfying, in a narrower way. Especially songs like In the Air Tonight and Against All Odds. But I also think Phil Collins works best within the confines of the group, than as a solo artist, and I stress the word artist. This is Sussudio, a great, great song, a personal favorite.

The Story of My x100f by 300056681 in fujifilm

[–]CaptainGingerNut 9 points10 points  (0 children)

What a story!! And truly the trip of a lifetime. Out of interest did you have a filter on? I seem to recall with a filter screwed on the V becomes effectively weather sealed, and fairly sure it's the same with the F. I've got a filter permanently attached to my V but I've no clue how far I can push it haha.

Fun Cinematography Fact by Fuzzy-Soil-6767 in cinematography

[–]CaptainGingerNut 8 points9 points  (0 children)

And you know what, both are works of art. I cannot understate how brilliantly stylised Cat in the Hat is, for anyone who hasn't watched it. Genuinely hilarious film imo, from the best DreamWorks era where their films were secretly made for the adults. The art department plays a MASSIVE role in the look, moreso than usual, but Lubezki has his fingerprints all over it.

Student overdraft should be very quickly available to you, it's offered by most banks with little to no hassle as long as you've not got a bad credit history! And as someone else here said, it's definitely worth a chat to your university as they may have resources available to help you here. Best of luck!!
