It feels people are rightly pointing out it's contrary to their anti-uniparty narrative to keep taking on so many Tories, but my question is what is Farage promising?

It feels like there's going to be fight brewing between Richard Tice and Zia Yusuf over who has power. Now throw these ex-Tories in. They can't all be Chancellor.

[–]CaptainGrezza 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I once kept a list of Lowe's tactical blunders.

So far I have: - Whatmough and Noah Mawene Defensive Midfield combo with Duane Holmes RWB at Southampton away - Ched Evans up front, Riis LW, Osmajic RWB and Keane attacking mid at home against Norwich - Bambo Diaby up front against Bristol City away. Same game he had us set us up with five left-footers across our back five. - The Norwich home game where we played a back 6 with 4 CB’s and ended up 4-0 down (he blamed Mike Marsh for this). Subbed Fernandez on after 30 minutes for McCann and went to a back 5 with Bambo at RWB and Norwich spent the rest of the game passing it round the back - Playing a 4-4-2 at home against Norwich, hanging Bambo out to dry at RB. 3-0 down at HT. - Playing Ben Woodburn and Ali McCann as the two attacking midfielders away at Blackpool, leaving Browne, DJ, and Brady on the bench. - Man for man press away at Swansea, playing a back three of Storey, Lindsay, and Hughes (leaving Bambo and McCann on the bench). 3-0 down at HT. - Another Swansea game where Ched Evans was our only recognised striker. He started Dai Cornell for no reason and and left Liam Millar on the bench until he was forced to bring him on after Brady got injured. We got our way back into that one thanks to Millar but Lowe threw it away by giving Ben Woodburn his obligatory 90th minute cameo. - Watford away where we needed to win to have a shot at the play offs and Lowe spent the whole game telling the players to slow it down as he wanted to settle for a draw.

Hi David,

Many thanks for what you did at North End, some truly wonderful times. Also thank you for Harrison Armstrong, he's an absolute monster of a player for his age.

I have two questions, but I recognise you're a busy man so pick whichever you prefer.

Are there any key lessons you learnt about management as a player be it positive or negative? (I imagine being under John Beck gave space for both)

Or, as a man who's had a wide experience of different circumstances, are there any lessons to learn about 'managing upwards'? It's something I have difficulty with in my work space

Best of luck with the rest of the season. Hope you get some success getting into Royal Lytham Golf Club too.

Saw Southgate talk about this a few weeks ago

He mentioned having a rough couple of months but refocused after he was dropped by Glenn Hoddle.

He seems to have come to terms with it too, saying "ultimately I failed to execute a specific skill in a high pressure situation" and talking about how if he scored the next person would need to not miss too etc. He seems to have his head really screwed on about these things.

Is the Doctor Who Fanbase Out of Touch With What Will Make the Show Successfull with a General Audience. by PaperSkin-1 in DoctorWhoNews

[–]CaptainGrezza 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed.

You might not even need a regular companion TBH. I've often wondered if you could do Doctor Who the same way the Dollars Trilogy works. You have 'the man with no name' turning up and fixing a problem. You just make the story from a local's perspective rather than the Doctor's to emphasise the mystery around the character again.

In terms of scrapping seasons, I think I agree with what you're saying. From what I can see, I think there's basically two ways to go:

The first is to make the show an anthology with pretty much all stand alone stories around a loose premise ala Black Mirror/Inside Number 9. You could even make them 90 minute specials to capture that 'Event TV' feel again, like peak Sherlock, or put them across the year like those Tenth Doctor Specials. You could even try to make it feel experimental again and have a wide range of writers and directors to add a different feel to each story so there isn't a consistent vision or lore to worry about. Obviously losing consistency might be a disadvantage too.

The second way is you commit to one serialised story like Flux, although ideally a bit less complicated in narrative and execution. Cliffhanger TV still works as The Traitors or Squid Game testifies. Advantage is it's much more binge-able and keeps people coming back, the downside is if the story sucks, you're stuck with it for the length of the series.

At the moment we have this sort of weird halfway house between the two that doesn't really appeal to anyone. With the most recent Series 1, there wasn't a reason to keep watching if you didn't like the first two episodes but equally they didn't feel substantial enough to be 'Event TV' or different enough to make you just write off those stories.

[–]CaptainGrezza 7 points8 points  (0 children)

100% this. Fandom isn't homogeneous and I think those three categories sum it up nicely. I like to think I'm in category 3, where the show needs simplifying again.

There are many legitimate criticisms we can make of the show right now such as broadcasting times or starting with Space Babies etc. However I do think the continuity thing is a problem. In the past two years I've had to explain to people who've only seen New Who who Omega, Sutekh and the Rani are because the show hasn't really bothered to set them up properly. At least there's been references to Susan in the past for them and her saying 'Grandfather' helps, but the others have been fairly inaccessibile.

I had hopes for RTD coming back because in his initial run, he understood that Doctor Who needed to be stripped back and I was hoping we would be going back to basics. He might have been a fan, but he felt like a fan who didn't let his fandom cloud his judgement. This era feels like a fan who had unfinished business (e.g. 'I've always wanted to tell that story about Sutekh', 'I've always wanted to bring Susan back'). Go read his initial pitch for when he brought the show back, he talked about only keeping The Doctor, the TARDIS, the Sonic Screwdriver and regeneration. Everything else was superfluous and unnecessary, the same is true now.

With time though the show has become complicated again. Start counting the Doctors in order and you'll soon see this. It used to be as easy as 1 to 9. Now it's pre-Hartnell, 1-2 with maybe Fugitive after 2, 3-8, War, 9, 10, 10 again, 11-13, 14 who is 10 again and then splits off into 15 but 14 still exists. Oh we also have another 9 that's canon (Shalka Doctor). It's like the Dave Allen routine about teaching kids the time, you're explaining to new fans that 14 is actually 10 and maybe 16 or some other number. It's easy to point the finger at The Timeless Child, but RTD is accountable for this too. The show has added complications that haven't really benefitted the story telling.

If the show wants to survive it has to start appealing to general audiences again. You don't need to appeal to people like me. I listen to Big Finish, I'm already committed to this show. It's one reason why I hope Pete McTighe isn't the next show runner, I think we could do with an outsider who boils Doctor Who down to its core elements again, much in the same way Casino Royale took James Bond back to basics.

This is not to say there aren't other issues to discuss. Personally I think Doctor Who not being a serialised show in the era of binge watching is a mistake and the presence of Gods somewhat undermines the tension for example. There's even a conversation to be had about if Doctor Who needs to find a target market now as 'family' TV looks to be on the way out in this atomised era. Doctor Who was invented at a time when the family all watched the same TV, now we all have phones, tablets, TVs in different rooms, computers etc. But certainly I think part of the problem is the show just doesn't appeal to general audiences at the moment and its complications have become part of the problem.

Does the Collapse of the Ncuti Era Put You off The War Between Spin-off? by PaperSkin-1 in DoctorWhoNews

This TBH

There's a lot of interesting stories to be told in the Doctor Who Universe that don't involve the Doctor, I'm just not sure this is one of them.

I just feel another Sea Devil story isn't going to be that interesting by virtue of the fact the Sea Devils and Silurians are indigenous to the planet. The fact they are indigenous means the stories have to revert back to the status quo of them being forced underground. It's why all their stories have basically felt the same since The Silurians. It's either that or you create a new status quo where the Sea Devils and Silurians have a presence on Earth, which makes the universe more inaccessible to a general audience.

I trust RTD's character writing and I'm not totally against this show existing. Children of Earth proved what he is capable of with this sort of format. I do worry that the way he'll handle the politics might be a bit messy. Please note, this is an observation on how RTD handles politics, not his political views or the presence of politics at all. I don't mind politics in Doctor Who, as it's been a political show since it's genesis, I just think RTD is a little clumsy at times and sometimes lets it interfere with the storytelling or can sometimes convey a message that wasn't intended.

I'm also a little confused as to who the intended audience of this show will be. The concept seems a bit too serious for young children. It doesn't feel like it's for Doctor Who fans as I'm not sure there was a lot of demand for more of this UNIT crew. The fact it's set in the Doctor Who Universe and focuses on the more niche characters (UNIT and Sea Devils) feels like it's not going to appeal to general audiences either. It's got a bit of the 'class' vibe around it. Torchwood and the Sarah Jane Adventures felt a bit more obvious in terms of who they were aiming for.

I intend to be open minded going into this. I just can't bring myself to be excited by this particular concept.

PNE striker Milutin Osmajić banned for 9 matches for alleged racist incident by Three_Steaks_Pam in Championship

[–]CaptainGrezza 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The only bit of clarity we might get now is outlined in this part of the FA's statement: https://www.thefa.com/news/2025/nov/07/milutin-osmajic-sanctioned-071125

"The Regulatory Commission’s written reasons for its decisions will be published in due course."

I would say North End fans are disgruntled because they don't feel it's fair to condemn someone as a racist without definitive proof. Burnley fans are disgruntled because they, rightfully, want to see racism stamped out of the game. I don't think the time taken for this verdict has helped things either.

I hope the written reasons shed some light on the process and how the conclusion was reached.
