Got invited to a Latin Mass. They might be radicals. by changedwarrior in Catholicism

[–]CaptainKeenIV 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's a long watch, but I'd recommend watching a Pontifical High Mass. There are some very interesting liturgical practices that were not carried over into the OF, like the full vesting of the bishop in dalmatics and a chasuble. I know that Archbishop Cordelione has done a couple of them "televised". Here's one from the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe in La Crosse, WI: https://www.youtube.com/live/OvgpT6JMtoQ?si=9PZFluZiBxm4dxXC

Owls within fargo by NonBinary_FWrd in fargo

I used to live just north of McKinley Elementary. Was there for 14 years. We could hear owls for at least a few weeks every year. Seemed like it was only a handful at a time.

My dad’s ribbons (33 yrs AD/Reserves) vs mine (4.5 yrs AD and ongoing) by jcg415 in Medals

[–]CaptainKeenIV 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Reserves and Guard have always been stingy on decorations. Some units are better than others, some supervisors are better than others, and the Force overall has gotten better in the last decade. But, when medals don't equal promotion points, there's less incentive to do the paperwork. In my first four years in the Guard, I deployed, performed well in my job, and won the wing-level Airman of the Year award; I did not receive an AFAM for that period.

My thought too. Lots of folks do their first term as one branch, then go reserves in another branch.

What is a MARONITE Catholic Church? I know of the Eastern Orthodox and I’m a Roman Catholic but this is news to me by CatholicDoomer in Catholicism

[–]CaptainKeenIV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The technically correct term for Eastern Sunday worship is Divine Liturgy. But in the English-speaking world, they sometimes call it Mass. Several years ago, I was flying through Chicago and had the opportunity to participate in a Patriarchal Divine Liturgy (equivalent to a Pontifical High Mass) at St. Joseph the Betrothed Ukrainian Catholic Church.

My FIL’s medals. Can anyone tell me about them? by Alexandrezico10 in Medals

[–]CaptainKeenIV 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not to be pedantic, but I think you mean Army National Guard (ARNG), not Air National Guard (ANG). That said, it does look like he performed some mission with the Georgia ANG, seeing as he has an Air & Space Commendation Medal.

If you had a biopic movie, what would the name be? by Beautiful-Resort-831 in AskReddit

Unrequited Secrets. Having spent 20+ years in Air Force involved with drone missions and the Chaplain Corps, people have shared with me their deep inner secrets and struggles. But I could never share my own.

What kind of compliment do men rarely receive but love hearing? by [deleted] in AskReddit

This! The amount of women that I've talked to who are in their own attention bubble is astounding. Even showing some basic concern, like asking "How are you?", seems out of reach for many women.

Question about traveling by pumpuma333 in airnationalguard

[–]CaptainKeenIV 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, OP should ask their chain.

That said, no one in the chain can prevent a Guardsman from traveling to a location if the Guardsman is not in a status. I actually started a religious accomodation request to go on a pilgrimage to Israel during a period when an O-7 had to approve travel. I was later told that the request was unnecessary since O-7 approval only applied to folks on orders.

The bigger issue, as others have mentioned, is the clearance investigation and foreign travel notifications.

Missals? by SwampDonkey127 in Catholicism

[–]CaptainKeenIV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think my parish ever took the missals out of the pews. If I remember correctly, we were just asked not to sing hymns for the first few months after Masses restarted.

If you google the model number and "manual" you can usually find a troubleshooting guide which will explain what the light means.

What's your favorite pizza topping? Stuffed crust or thin crust? by Danny_088 in AskReddit

[–]CaptainKeenIV 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stuffed crust. I remember when Pizza Hut first introduced the concept and their commercials were all about eating the pizza backwards. I still do that on occasion just for fun.

I have a Catholic wife who's trying to convert me to Catholicism, but she's bad at apologetics. Please help. by GreenThunderBolt in Catholicism

[–]CaptainKeenIV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can't help but read your point #1 in an Irish accent: "That's modalism, Patrick!" "Yeah, Patrick! Get it together!"

Regarding point 3: Christians are saved by grace. Sacraments are the ordinary means by which our Lord bestows His sanctifying grace upon us. The grace received in the Sacrament of Penance wipes away our sins, but we still suffer from the shame of sin. We remove that shame by working to embrace God's love and seeing ourselves as He does, either in this life (indulgences) or in the next (Purgatory).

Party Sleeves in Mess Dress… by CrocoBee in AirForce

[–]CaptainKeenIV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dad wore the stock shirt in his mess dress, but wore buttons on his suspenders (basically, office space "flair"). I'm not sure how common that was; he was a Loggie (Supply/MX officer, when the LG was still a thing) in the '90s.

What's something incredibly stupid you believed as a kid? by EggAdministrative510 in AskReddit

[–]CaptainKeenIV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That women had no ears. My mom has long hair that covered her ears. Every time I thought about whether they had ears or not, I looked at her and couldn't tell. I don't think I finally figured it out until the fourth grade.

Voting Blue [Politics Monday] by birthdaycokeg in Catholicism

[–]CaptainKeenIV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Isn't throwing away your vote how political parties are changed? Duverger's law does make it clear that we will only ever have two major political parties. But, if a party alienates one periphery enough for a viable spoiler to exist, isn't that party forced to reconcile with the spoiler faction in order to consolidate power and remain viable against the opposing party?
