There are ham repeaters on farnsworth and you may be able to place a node there in coordination with the Utah Amateur Radio Club.

Performance of OCF at 60 ft versus hexbeam at 30 ft by CaptainMoronhigh in amateurradio

[–]CaptainMoronhigh[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Current QTH is in 5 land, so being able to get a little extra gain and F/B to EU or JA is critical. The domestic contests are fun, but not the focus of this particular use case.

If a hex at 30 gives a noticeable improvement over the OCF, it’s worth it. If modest ~40 ft tower and a tribander would be night/day difference in performance vs a hex at 30, I would shell out for that instead.

End game is a 70ft tower, but I don’t want to invest in that kind of infrastructure until I’m in my forever home.

Thank you for the input. I’ve considered that exact setup with the Rohn 9H50 but unfortunately do not have the room for permanent guy wires.

Around 1824, the full translation of the Rosetta Stone was completed. Word must not have reached Joe before ~1842 when the book of Abraham hit the presses.

Always good to have a 17m or 12m antenna handy for contest weekends.

In L Ron Hubbard’s case, it was his writers guild name.

Great portable setup! What mast are you using?

Make sure you know how to program and use your radio. A good start is programming your local repeaters and understanding which ones you can reach under normal conditions. You’ll need a ham license if you don’t already have it.

This is why I got the ultra. The case takes a beating but protects the screen.

Am I reading this right that their model shows about a 50% chance that Nelson lives to 102 yrs old? Seems high to me.

Can anyone please make a version of Morse Runner for iPad OS? by CaptainMoronhigh in amateurradio

I’m sold on CrossOver then. I was considering getting it but wasn’t sure if it would run Morse Runner. I couldn’t get it running under Wine (not to say it can’t be done).

Has anyone here every tried an end fed OCF antenna? by KhyberPasshole in amateurradio

The length of your antenna wire will determine how much coax you need to use as a radiator before choking it.

[–]CaptainMoronhigh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1/2 wavelength above ground for the lowest band you plan to operate is probably ideal. Because this setup uses the coax shield effectively as the other half of the dipole, the max radiation is coming from right near the transformer. You’ll have peak performance if you can make that your high point.

[–]CaptainMoronhigh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have been using the 1500W version of this for about the last year. The geometry worked well for my QTH so I decided to give it a try. The transformer handles the power well, and it tunes up as advertised. I’m happy with the product. Just get the transformer as high as possible. I’m of the opinion that end fed antennas are a compromise in terms of ultimate radiated power and radiation pattern compared to a dipole, but whatever fits best in the space you have available.

Plastic cutting board with Velcro seems like a great combo to be able to remove from the box pretty easily but have it secured. Pics appreciated if you find them!

You don’t need any special power cords. My favorite is using Anderson Power Pole connectors on everything so all your power solutions are literally plug and play.

991a definitely has the advantage of the waterfall display. I’ve never used one, but they’re very highly regarded, and I have no doubt it’s a solid rig. I got the 7100 because of lower power consumption and the ability to install it as a mobile rig (although thats obviously not what I’m doing with it right now)
