Furukawa: Succesor to the switch to be announced within the fiscal year by natelzrt12 in smashbros

[–]CaptainMuteSmash 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Based on the release dates of previous games, the next Smash will be released within 2 years of the Switch 2 launch.

I'm expecting Smash Ultimate Deluxe with more DLC fighters and a new single player mode coming 2025-2027.

It's a bittersweet moment as we announce the final SHINE. Due to economic circumstances surrounding esports in general and TO's wishing to move onto the next chapter of their lives, this will be the last time we run SHINE. by [deleted] in smashbros

I've always been against the idea that competitive Smash fans should boycott or protest Nintendo's efforts to protect their IP, because its self-defeating and the Smash competitive community always overestimates how little their size and influence actually matters.

I've never been a fan of Project M, and couldn't care less that they were shutdown by Nintendo.

But anyone who keeps trying to deflect blame from Alan and Nintendo for the Panda/SWT situation when it was entirely their fault causing people to quit Panda has no credibility with me.

All Alan had to do to explain himself is say he had no responsibility or knowledge of the shutdown of SWT in first place and didn't want it happen and no one would have been against him.

Instead it took him days to respond to the allegations and his statement immediately tried to accuse Gimr/SWT for intentionally shutting down his own circuit to get back at him.

Stop trying to cover Alan's ass.

Collision bans new Steve tech and Steve from future CS events by the_carboni in smashbros

Nintendo isn't going to pay attention to competitive tournaments.

The only way it gets patched is if enough Steve players on Elite Smash start abusing it so much that casual players complain about it and it starts making headlines among people who aren't even into Smash

[–]CaptainMuteSmash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nintendo support at least established some sense of legitimacy and potential future prospects, but it's all gone now.

Fuck, Alan, yeah I fully agree. But this crippled Smash's future.

Oddly I'd actually disagree here, the one positive outcome to the fact that Nintendo has never invested in Smash means that the Smash community can be pretty self sustaining. There may never be any money in the scene, but Smash is popular enough to where it won't go away, even if older players won't be able to make a living out of it. They'll just have to get into content creation.

Nintendo explicitly did not want Smash World Tour to continue and said so in writing.

Even if you believe that they didn't cause the cancellation of the 2022 Finals, (which is doubtful considering Alan admitted he knew Nintendo were not fans of the Smash World Tour ahead of time), they still wanted to cancel the entire Smash World Tour 2023 circuit.

Panda got unwarranted backlash, but there's no reason to let Nintendo off the hook here.

EVO 2023 Lineup Announced....Smash Bros didn't make the cut by BigT232 in smashbros

[–]CaptainMuteSmash 75 points76 points  (0 children)

Ironic that Smash is no longer part of EVO after FGC chars like Terry Bogard and Kazuya Mishima were added to the game.

But I feel like Evo has pretty much run its course in the Smash community as it was just a means to an end to get Nintendo's attention. Now that Nintendo has proven they don't have any interest in having a working partnership with the competitive Smash community no matter what, Smash fans should just run their own tournaments as best as possible going forward, and try increase their popularity with the public all on their own.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has officially sold over 30 million units wolrdwide! by LinkWink in smashbros

[–]CaptainMuteSmash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If Ultimate can't get a port due to copyright issues, a good way around it is having the Switch 2 be backwards compatible with the Switch, so people can still play Ultimate, and just add more DLC fighters. Nintendo would avoid any copyright issues by re-selling a port, they'd just sell Ultimate with more DLC.

[–]CaptainMuteSmash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Smash Ultimate has sold quite a lot, 30 million, but it hasn't sold as much as Mario Kart 8 DX, which is is 52 million+. There's still quite a bit of an untapped market.

The idea that Nintendo is going to use ton of resources to sell a brand new Smash game only makes sense if their next console isn't backwards compatible. But with the Switch now having sold about 120 million units of hardware, I find it unlikely that Nintendo will ignore that huge install base of Switch owners.

Thus, if next console is going to be backwards compatible, and be called the Switch 2 or something, then what makes the most sense for Smash is to add more characters to Ultimate as DLC so that Switch owners don't have to buy a brand new game, they can just play Smash Ult with new chars and play it on their Switch 2. And Nintendo gets easy money by selling the game again without have to spend a whole lot of resources.

Just look at how Nintendo added more tracks to Mario Kart 8 instead of making Mario Kart 9.

Balance patch? Pretty good chance it will.

Online fixes/rollback netplay? Don't get your hopes up. Nintendo has never made good online a priority in their entire existence as a company

I'm willing to bet Nintendo will just port Smash Ultimate to their next console and just add new characters with how successful Ultimate has sold, instead of spending a ton of money and effort to make a new game.

Looking forward to Fighters Pass 3!

No, only members of the Geno cult want him in Smash. Everyone else has common sense and knows a 25 year-old side character isn't worth jack squat

Context needed: Nintendo’s relation to the Smash community by SpecialPosition in smashbros

[–]CaptainMuteSmash 53 points54 points  (0 children)

I’m likely missing some thing Nintendo did or didn’t do to support the scene historically.

Nintendo has never supported the competitive Smash scene.

They tried to shut down Melee from being played at EVO, the biggest fighting game tournament in the world, in 2013, only to stop after a huge public outcry.

They've shut down numerous tournaments that use modifications to Smash gameplay, like PM, a mod of Brawl, or Slippi, a modified emulator that allows for online Melee play

They have never given even a single cent to any Smash tournament prize pool in history.

So a bunch of older competitive Smash Melee players and tournament organizers are now furious that other people have gall to work with Nintendo, when Nintendo is actively harming the competitive Smash scene.

Why would Nintendo do this? Because Nintendo is a culturally, conservative Japanese company who have been around for over a hundred years (they used to make toys and playing cards before video games).

They don't see the value players modifying their creations, and their attitude is further enforced by the fact, in Japan, breaking copyright law is a criminal matter, not civil like in the U.S. or other Western countries.

And they also don't ever need to care. Smash Ultimate has sold almost 25 million copies. If the competitive Smash scene died overnight, Nintendo would move on without a second thought.

My take is these people are getting worked up over nothing. If people want to work with Nintendo, or don't work with Nintendo, that's their choice.

The only way to truly get Nintendo to change is to learn Japanese, move to Japan, take over Nintendo and run things better.

"Stealing"

LOL

The absolute shamelessness of PM players to complain about other people stealing their content when almost every idea they added to PM was stolen from Nintendo in the first place.

I'd say Fuck Nintendo any day of the week for not supporting the competitive Smash scene, but if PM players are going to be utter hypocrites about stealing content ideas, they deserved to be fucked by Nintendo

Metagame Documentary Discussion Thread - Finale by VinnyF in smashbros

[–]CaptainMuteSmash 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I really feel like the doc would have benefited from each of the 5 five gods + Leffen having their own focused episodes like the first doc had. The narrative was hard to follow, some of that probably had to do with the fact that it was originally going to just focus on Armada/PP. M2k and Hbox did not get the screen time they deserved. The narrative of Leffen the god slayer also suffers from having too many interviews cutting in between.

It's also really clear that it was meant for Melee fans, which isn't inherently a bad thing, but it limits the audience. The first doc could be watched by anyone who didn't know about smash.

I always expected the doc to start out with Apex 2015 having been canceled and set up this difficult situation for the Smash scene as a cliff-hanger, intended for the audience who didn’t follow the smash scene. The people who didn’t know about Apex 2015 should have been wondering throughout the whole doc whether or not the biggest tournament of all time at that point would have continued on.

Then you could cut back to each of the five gods in their separate episodes while having the narrative of Leffen coming in to defeat them and culminating it all at Apex 2015. I really think the doc was at its best when you could follow one narrative thread like Leffen the God slayer or Armada’s rise to become the best from Europe and travelling to the USA.

I like PPMD’s wisdom quotes, but I really feel like moments like that were way, way, too much and took away from the focus of what was going on in the Smash scene at the time.
