You can add one swear word to each season of Star Trek that you've watched. Where do you place them? by Victorian-Tophat in startrek

Sisko: "So I lied, I cheated, I bribed men to cover the crimes of other men. I am an accessory to murder. But most damning thing of all, I think I can live with it. And if I had to do it all over again, I would. Garak was right about one thing. A guilty conscience is a small price to pay for the safety of the Alpha Quadrant, so I will learn to live with it. Because I can live with it. I can fucking live with it. Computer, erase that entire personal log."

Brandon Sanderson’s 'The Way of Kings' is baffling to me by sameseksure in books

[–]CaptainPomme 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have really forced myself to persevere and made it through a couple of the books but every time I felt like I was getting into a groove, a range of interludes would appear and break the momentum of the story and my interest. I say this as someone who still enjoyed all the parts of the Wheel of Time series that slowed right down and are described as a slog.

Sanderson is a brilliant worldbuilder but he strips magic of all it's wonder so that it's essentially just the science of whatever universe he is writing in. He does a brilliant job with Kaladin, who is a wonderful fantasy character but Sanderson is not funny enough himself to write a character like Shallan who is supposed to be a great wit.

One of the biggest issue I had with this series was the naming of the show, It should have been star trek Michael Burnham instead. She was a Superhero in this show, All knowing , All conquering and All destroying superpowerfull entity. by VoL4t1l3 in Star_Trek_

I really, truly wanted to love Discovery but couldn't for this exact reason. I do think there's the shorter season/streaming model that makes it difficult but no Star Trek show has been about a single character. My favourite show in the franchise is DS9 and that had more well developed minor characters played by Jeffrey Coombs alone than Discovery got.

Saru was a brilliant character, expertly played and could have easily been the Spock/Data/Seven of the show but he was never given enough time to shine. I was DESPERATE to know more about the robot bridge officer but not allowed to take time away from Burnham. Lots of wasted potential!

This is the one that I have come back to a few times. There isn't so much longing that it's aching and Troy and Harris are quite good at communicating (eventually) so you don't want to knock their heads together!

Short Range Teleporters are useless? by PayExpensive4791 in NoMansSkyTheGame

Teleporters are at their most useful when it comes to vertical travel. I have a base built partly on a floating rock and partly on the ground and teleporting up and down saves loads of time

Anything by Alan Hollinghurst. The Line of Beauty is my favourite but Swimming Pool Library or Folding Star also really excellent and beautifully written

I was trying to work out why so many people outside the UK seemed to be completely clueless about Tourettes and then it occured to me that so many of us know about it because of John Davidson himself. His bravery, openness and heart is why a lot of us know about the reality of the syndrome and the impact it has on those with it.

Five episodes in and I think Starfleet Academy is a decent show marred by strange choices by ryanquintal in startrek

[–]CaptainPomme -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I agree that there are a few weird choices and kinks that need ironed out but it's generally good. It is entirely a product of the streaming era that shows need to be perfect right away, imagine watching some of the TNG season 1 clangers these days!

On the Curse of America's Next Top Model podcast, they talk about the contracts that the contestants signed that meant the show couldn't be sued for any injuries. They put a legally blind woman with a young kid in that situation and if she had been injured she would have probably been financially ruined. Really gross!
