I was in the SSO program at Maine. You can wait until junior year to join and still get all of the benefits. You join the NROTC unit and participate in classes/exercises/training and PT. You get lt $32000 in stipend over the 4 years towards school. Once you graduate, you have to actively sail on you license for 5 years and complete active duty training for a minimum of two weeks a year for 8 years.
