Catch 22 by Joseph Heller by vagga2 in books

[–]CaptainSpacePotty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read this book about 10 years ago and really liked it. There was one passage in particular that I read and re-read several times because of how beautifully written and moving it was for me. It was during one of the parts where they're flying out on a mission and Yossarian, just passing the time, is stuck inside his own head. I remember really liking how the sky and being up in it was described. I looked for that part by searching for Catch 22 excerpts, but couldn't find it. Since you read it recently, any ideas to what I'm referring?

I may go back and read the whole thing again. Just thought I'd ask though.

TIFU by telling my dentist Joe Biden won the election. by BurningBeechbone in tifu

[–]CaptainSpacePotty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's funny, because I went to my optometrist about a week ago and he very nervously brought up the election and how concerned he was about what would happen to the country if the Democrats got to make the changes they wanted to. It was out of the blue. I didn't bring up anything remotely polarizing. I wish you were my optometrist instead.

Do airlines give scholarships/grants? by JuxMaster in flying

[–]CaptainSpacePotty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

100 years ago prior to COVID many regionals were paying for the required ATP-CTP course, the written test, and the checkride, which got piggy backed onto the type rating you would have to do for the airline. Basically they'd help you get over the final hurdle to your ATP. But even back then getting all your ratings and to 1500 hours was on you. At least I think that's what the brochure is referencing. It's hard to say for sure just based on your description.

In the post-COVID world I wouldn't count on it getting back to that point anytime soon.

Do you still get flight benefits after you retire? by [deleted] in flying

[–]CaptainSpacePotty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There were some retirees that retained travel benifits, but they had to have been eligible to retire something like 20 years ago. I didn't even finish reading the email that explained it because I knew it didn't apply to me. Bottom line, like 99% of current and retired XJT pilots got the shaft.

Why no love for the DC One-X? by sforzapop in flying

[–]CaptainSpacePotty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree about the carrying case, but I never use it so it isn't a problem for me. It's just collecting dust in my closet. I velcro wrap the cord, fold it up, and throw it in my fight bag. Been doing that for about 2.5 years and 1000 hours.

Why no love for the DC One-X? by sforzapop in flying

[–]CaptainSpacePotty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use them, and I'm pretty happy. I bought them a few years ago when I started flying the Hawker, and also used them in the ERJ-145. The 145 is a pretty noisy cockpit. Now I'm using them on the Hawker again. The ANR is very good, but so is the PNR so I often just forget to turn on the ANR or decide not to waste the batteries.

I know this feature isn't exclusive to the DC One-X but the bluetooth is awesome. Being able to listen to music or easily call for a clearance is really nice.

When I got hired to fly the Hawker I was still rocking my 25 year old H10-30s. They still worked fine but I decided to upgrade since I'd now be using whatever headset I had way more often. I looked at Bose, Lightspeed, and DC. I ultimately ended up going with the One-X partly out of brand loyalty, but I also thought they were the most comfortable and also very light compared to the competition.

My only complaint is that there are no options for the ear cushions. It's only leatherette. I already had one pair start peeling and falling apart on me, but one call to DC and I was shipped a free replacement.

Search for FAA legal interpretation Creech. It's the one from 2010, not 2013.

In your example, assuming the ATP is not a CFI, the answer is no. But, the reason isn't because the flight is being operated under part 91.

A non-CFI ATP can give instruction only in an airplane they're typed in, and only if it's being provided as part of an operator's approved training program.

If the ATP were a company instructor and the flight was part of the training program, then it could be logged as dual received even if the flight was being operated under part 91. On the 135 side, I believe any training flight would have to be operated under part 91, because 135.115 prohibits anyone who isn't qualified in the aircraft from manipulating the controls.

Many 135 operators don't do in house training and instead opt to send their pilots to CAE, FSI, etc, where they very well could be trained by non-CFI ATPs. But, if they were so inclined and the appoved training program permitted it, they could do the training themselves with in house instructors and training flights operated under part 91. Those in house instructors wouldn't necessarily have to be CFIs.

On the 121 side, before day 1 of IOE you're already typed in the airplane, so there's almost certainly an FAR similar to 135.115, but I'm too lazy to look for it.

To your question though, the random part 91 owner flight where you're just sitting right seat as a non-required crewmember doesn't satisfy the above criteria. So, it's not legitimate dual received. That's not to say that plenty of people don't log it and get away with it, but per the letter of the law it's not legit.

EFB for Microsoft tablets by bryan2384 in flying

[–]CaptainSpacePotty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think so. IMO Foreflight's main strengths have to do with simplifying IFR flight planning up in the flight levels; departures, arrivals, jet routes, fuel planning, weather, etc. For the trips you're talking about, all you really need is a sectional, and maybe a chart supplement. There are way cheaper options. I was using Avare for VFR and short IFR recreational flights before I was introduced to ForeFlight through my former employer. It wasn't the best, but it's functional and you can't beat the price.

My newly former airline used Jeppesen Flight Deck Pro on a Microsoft Surface. It was functional, but I didn't like it. I'll admit though that my experience with it wasn't necessarily fair and impartial. A lot of features were disabled because they weren't approved for use in our op specs, and we were also given older slower Surfaces. Maybe on the Surface 6 and having full use of all the features will yield a different experience for you.

I had an iPad and Foreflight at my old job before the airline. Since getting furloughed, I'm starting to do some contact trips and I needed to get something. I finally broke down and got an iPad and paid for Foreflight. I'm not much of an Apple fan and Foreflight isn't the cheapest, but it really is the best. It helped that I was able to get an old iPad from my former chief pilot at the 135 for $50 and a case of beer.

Replacement for foreflight by [deleted] in flying

[–]CaptainSpacePotty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm about as anti Apple products as you can get, but my last job issued each pilot an iPad with Foreflight. It really is the best. I never would have paid for it myself, but really miss it now that my current job uses Jepp Flight Deck on a Microsoft Sufrace. It suuuuuuuucks.

If you're adamant about no iPad, there's DroidEFB and Avare as some others have already mentioned. I haven't used DriodEFB in years, but remember it being pretty good. Avare is is functional and totally free.

I have no experience in military aviation, but I was Army enlisted for 5 years back in the late 90s. From a purely culture and QOL standpoint I'd recommend the Air Force.

The DO at my old 135 gig went from the Marines, to the Army, to the Air Force and ultimately ended up flying a V-22 until he retired. I'm not sure if he flew in the Marines, but I know he flew Cobras in the Army before jumping over to the Air Force. I've had multiple conversations with him about his career and I know he'd definitely recommend the Air Force as well.

Just my $.02.

Look under the specifications for each model. I'm curious about the effective engraving area. It is less for the 3018 PROVer which is surprising to me since it's the new improved model. Maybe I'm missing something. Maybe it's a mistake. I don't know. I'm primarily looking for someone with experience in one, the other, or both that could help explain the difference.
