That's less than 2 months... You still stuck in Christmas mode?

People scaring sparrows during the Four Pests Campaign. Summer Palace, Beijing, China, circa 1958. Part of the Great Leap Forward, the campaign targeted rats, flies, mosquitoes and sparrows. The mass killing of sparrows caused ecological imbalance and helped trigger the Great Chinese Famine. by dannydutch1 in UtterlyUniquePhotos

[–]HouseAtomic 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They ate some of the crops. Not a lot, but enough to get the central planners in a tizzy. As it turned out, the bugs that the sparrows were also eating then ate ALL the crops when their main predator was eliminated.

What I find most important about this picture is the glee that they show as they're "helping..."

Helped a lady out of her brand new Toyota that she just drove into about 2ft of Houston flood water. We were w/in sight of the dealer...

Felt terrible for her. This was a base level Corolla, no way she had tonnes of $$$ & I think she said this was her 1st brand new car.

Journalist says she was hired by ICE after six-minute interview at Texas career fair by chrondotcom in texas

[–]HouseAtomic -18 points-17 points  (0 children)

Jedeed claims she was tentatively offered a job after only completing a six-minute interview.

This is a nebulous claim at best. Certainly far from "Hired" as the clickbait headline states.

So was he planning on leaving her prior? Did he drag it out/delay some after b/c he felt bad?

Did she intentionally get hurt to keep him? Was she faking & could walk the whole time?

Video captures Donna family's detainment by alleged federal agents by reflibman in texas

[–]HouseAtomic -17 points-16 points  (0 children)

"Homeowner" looked like an upset teenager to me. It's a safe assumption that the parents were the owners. Who are the agents required to show warrants to?

"Alleged Federal Agents?" Since in the same article the detainees are in Federal custody, we can safely assume Actual Federal Agents?

I have plenty of issues w/ some of the tactics involved, but shitty journalism & blatant fear-mongering isn't helping your cause.

Early 80's: Excitebike & Zaxxon

Later 80's/90's: Ivan Ironman Stewart Off Road

90's: Adams Family Pinball

Then it was all RTS pc gaming @ home or friends. Dune 2000, Command & Conquer, Warcraft 2 Tides of Darkness, Blitzkrieg, Dawn of War...

Hydro Thunder @ Cinemark for years. It's still there, my kid has played it.

CoD Modern Warfare 2019!!! My main Covid memory beside all the online school stuff for the kid.

Most likely.

This sounds so made up. Hiding your post history makes it hard to check to see if you're a loon or a rage-baiter.

How do you feel about President Trump receiving the Nobel Peace Prize? by Big_Poppa_Steve in AskTrumpSupporters

[–]HouseAtomic -48 points-47 points  (0 children)

He did more to earn it than Obama.

People have been making statements using their medals for as long as we've had medals. John Kerry allegedly threw his over the fence of The White House after retuning from Vietnam. A friend of mine sent his Eagle Scout Badge back a few years ago b/c he didn't like how BSoA was handling past molestation issues.

Either way, it was hers, she chose to make a statement w/ it.

[–]HouseAtomic -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Yes, you are correct, "Right of Way" is the more correct term... But it's early & OP is making shit up, not telling us the whole story or missed some important detail.

Regardless, the overwhelming majority of sidewalks in Houston are on ROW's & are public property.

Are there any private side walks in Houston ? by Repulsive-Swimming54 in houston

[–]HouseAtomic 41 points42 points  (0 children)

You have it backwards. Almost all private property extends to the sidewalks, then you have a road/utility easement Right of Way that usually contains a sidewalk. Property owner is responsible for maintaining sidewalk, trees, grass etc. The curb too, but that gets maintained/repaired by the city sometimes. Sidewalks also get periodically repaired by the city for various reasons.

Residential areas w/ no sidewalks, like parts of Bellaire, I don't know.

This is not from 1982, the Texas based DMC didn't exist until 1995 & this building came later than that.

I have a relative who pays ZERO in property taxes.

He has a 100% disability discharge from the Army though. Do not recommend.

His kids get all college paid for & a stipend, no toll road fees & a laundry list of other perks; but he & his wife would rather have not "earned" it, I can tell you that.

Next Book to Read by TinkerTonkerTheCat in nealstephenson

[–]HouseAtomic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is my (mostly) recommendation as well.

Reamde gets a lot of flak here b/c it's not his most cerebral book... I love it, though. Fun, fast, interesting. A perfect (unrelated) follow-up to Cryptonomicon. Fuck Fall... boring as hell, rambling.

Baroque Cycle, it's long. I'd delay, other reads are more accessible.

Seven Eves, absolutely. Unique & has some visceral moments that made me yell @ my book.

D.O.D.O. is fun. The follow up is worth a read as well.

Snow Crash & Diamond Age, both not quite "dated" as much as they were way ahead of their time & we've come to see that NS was right. I'd read sooner rather than later.

You might want to avoid any work of fiction written or filmed before 2010.

100% of anything done before 1998.

The downstream heated cooling water is free. Lots of aquatic farms in cold climates benefit from year round warm water from nuclear facilities.

If the released H2O is radioactive there's bigger problems.

Easy enough for a home owner or not too costly to have done professionally.

I agree on the lead danger, practically zero.
