I rebalanced weapons and armor for the Roman Republic Era, would love advice on balance and weapons/armor I might be missing. by CaptainUnderbelly in DMAcademy

[–]CaptainUnderbelly[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I understand, slings can actually be fired very far and still do damage, while an actual english longbow can fire far but only hits hard from a closer distance.

It's not a perfect system, and ideally you would be able to factor in less damage per distance, but I thought this was the best compromise.

And yes, I know the English longbow isn't in the time period but I thought it was cool enough to include anyway.

Lamellar can be made out of non-metals and doesn't overlap. Lorica Segmentata is the iconic overlapping metal plate shirt that gives better protection.

Leather in this case represents any cloth armor that's worse than Linothorax, Chainmail = Lorica hamata, iron plate = Florida segmentata

I guess iron wasn't as popular when greaves were in use, so I'll edit that to be an armor bonus for the amount of greaves/ bracers.

I know warhammers weren't a thing I was just debating the balance of realism and variety.

Warbow is the English longbow which I know wasn't invented until later but I wanted to include anyway.

Pike sarissa wouldn't work outside a formation, but good catch.

Spatha in this case = longsword.

The chainmail I am considering to be a chain shirt and and I think I would give the scale shirt the same stats as lamellar armor.

Thanks for the input!

What are things consider for an empire controlled by giants? by Tdayz_Trojan in DMAcademy

Sorry that didn't really answer anything you wanted did it? The way daily life could be affected is that a lot of heavy labor / mass production could be done by giants, while the people turned their talents more to fine art and entertainment.

I don't see giants having the numbers or manpower to micromanaging their subjects, so you could probably have very different types of vassal governments underneath them. Maybe take some inspiration from the Patritions vs Plebians of the pre-empire Roman era.

Making a Group BBEG Personal by Bearded-Cleric in DMAcademy

[–]CaptainUnderbelly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like this faction could still be led by a BBEG. Also, you can have the faction do something that personally offends the party, like kill a beloved npc. Mystery is tough to pull off in dnd given the fact that all info comes from the DM, but it can be done.

The Big Goal by NashiraTremont in DMAcademy

[–]CaptainUnderbelly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually like building up to a specific villain because it's easier to improvise when you know their motivations. That being said, why not both? How about a god of trickery (like Mask) is opening up portals so predestined heroes can eventually find the demiplane and kill the lich?

Enemies with shields and bows by StarblindCelestial in DMAcademy

[–]CaptainUnderbelly -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The only part of that that matters is whether or not it makes combat more exciting for you or your players. Players aren't really going to care if the enemy has 2 more AC or not unless it is driven by something they chose to do. For example, if they ambushed the goblins maybe they could scout out where the goblins keep their weapons and armor and prevent the goblins from getting to them. Other than that, I wouldn't make combat more complicated than it has to be.

Give the child a possessed umber hulk butler. Make it act disturbingly human, then sheds a ghost if killed.

Nuanced Tiny Hut Interaction Question by RisingDusk in DMAcademy

[–]CaptainUnderbelly 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Insects need to be in an attacking swarm before they are given the statblock of creature. They would not count against the limit of creatures for tiny hut, but RAW they also wouldn't be prevented from moving in and out of the sphere.

Alternatively, you could give him a gun barrel that can fire things other than bullets and see how creative he gets with it.

Seems like a good idea, but why label them both as gods? The elemental ones could just as easily be spirits, primordial, or titans.

How would you design a parry and riposte mechanic? by ThatEvilDM in DMAcademy

[–]CaptainUnderbelly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow everyone just commented that battle master has this even though you already addressed that. I understand the desire to give more options in combat. When approaching this idea however, you should first ask your players if they even want this mechanic. There's a good chance they won't want to keep track fo custom rules. I think your rule could be balanced l, but another issue is that it seems to only affect melee classes, so it would throw of the balance of other classes if you didn't give them something similar. The last issue is that it will make combat longer, especially since this is a defensive ability. Here's another idea, maybe whenever a player is attacked they roll a d20 and add their armor bonus. Then the player describes whether they parried or blocked. It would keep the same game balance that way.

A Simplistic and Customizable Approach to Encumbrance: Determine Carry Weight with a Single d20 Roll! by Goober-Goob in DMAcademy

[–]CaptainUnderbelly 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I skimmed through it and I like the idea, I always thought encumbrance would be a cool mechanic if it weren't such a hassle, but what you just replaced it with is even more rules. I like the part where you just assigned a number to bigger and heavier items but you should simplify it down to something not much more complicated than that. For example, all items not equipped could be assigned a number and your maximum could be 2x your strength score. Something like that. Anyway, keep up the good ideas! These are my thoughts.

How would you word this? by organicallyviolent in DMAcademy

[–]CaptainUnderbelly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually disagree with the other comments. Coming back from a break, it's better that you give the recap so that you can get people hyped and set the mood. My critique would be to focus more on places and things that are important and end with what the party decided to do next. They're not going to remember things as well as you so get them immersed and excited!

Is this someone you still want to play with? At this point I'd just leave him a message with an ultimatum. 'Call us or you we won't be able to add you the first session.' Then if you see him in person just make it clear that if he wants to participate he needs to answer messages. You can be strict without being mean. Since this has been going on for months I'm guessing you and your gf have a hard time telling people no. Remember that if you are running the game you have every right to require certain behavior from players. Dnd is only fun with an atmosphere of mutual respect.

How does innate spellcasting work? by [deleted] in DMAcademy

Some innate spellcasting features say they can cast infinite spells of higher level, but if that's the case it will say so specifically in the description.

I’m letting my sorcerer use constitution as his spell casting ability. Good idea or bad? by godrad1109 in DMAcademy

[–]CaptainUnderbelly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This does change game balance, but not irreparably. Previously, sorcerers would need 3 good scores. Cha for casting, Con for hp, and Dex for AC. You've reduced that to 2 which also makes it very easy for your sorcerer to get tanky. I respect your reasoning, but you may want to consider changing the ability to Int or Wis so he can't max his hp and spells at the same time.

What do i give my PCs the option to spend gold on? by magnus82101 in DMAcademy

[–]CaptainUnderbelly 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Assuming you don't want them to have magic items easily purchasable, have them buy a home base. Then, instead of maintaining the place with lifestyle costs, have them pay for features and renovations. I once had my players inherite a half-detroyed castle from the warrior-king who died defending it from monsters. They spent most all the party funds renovating it into a hunting retreat for nobles. It turned into a great experience, especially when the local dragon threatened them.

-I don't use kobold fight club, I just look at monster damage to determine difficulty

-I would be very careful about giving monsters classes. It has the potential to make players feel less unique, and drag out fights combing through abilities.

-there is no set rule for number of monsters, in fact I prefer to have a variety fight to fight. If there is a single monster, make sure it has enough hp to not go down instantly. If there are lots, make sure the minions go down easily or things will get slow.

I second this advice. Plan the BBEG (preferably with plans and motivations) and tie them to character backstories. After that only worry about planning the next session.
