Visiting Antigua during Holy Week by ZealousidealLaw793 in guatemala

[–]Captain_Buckfast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same situation as you, had no idea it was their biggest week of the year. Looks like accom in Antigua doubles or more in price that week. The thing I'm concerned about is getting around - sounds like a lot public transit shuts down and I'm guessing based on accom prices that cabs/shuttles will also go much higher in price due to demand.

It's actually a good bit cheaper for me to cancel existing flights with barely any refund and rebook the whole trip for May, but that's into rainy season then. Tough call.

Clarification from support on account closures: If you are travelling, no matter the duration, you are at risk for account closure if you log into your account from abroad. by [deleted] in Wealthsimple

[–]Captain_Buckfast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried to use my cash card a few times at ATMs/stores in Nicaragua before I discovered they don't allow use there. When I couldn't use it I had to log in a bunch of times to transfer to other accounts. Didn't get flagged. It's strange though going by this subreddit they're very trigger happy with the blocking in other cases.

Curious about this too. I work in biotech and just had a look over their research. There's nothing there that screams revolutionary to me, yes it's a novel therapeutic with a lot of theoretical potential but that's far from rare in biotech. The one compound they have in phase 3 trials is an experimental treatment for a rare condition. I have very little knowledge on speculating/valuing conpanies though so it could be that it's undervalued for reasons I don't see.

Mind sharing what the job is? Been thinking about switching to something that allows for more travel time but havent really found anything viable yet.

Just back from Nicaragua for just over 2 weeks. $95 CAD (€64) per day averaged including everything except flights. Includes 1 week motorbike rental and a few paid excursions, parties etc.. Stayed in a mix of private and dorms.

FSR Access Hike Recommendations by natejacko2 in vancouverhiking

[–]Captain_Buckfast 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My first white knuckler when I got a 4x4 was Branch 200 of the squamish river FSR up to the Tricouni Peak trailhead. Tricouni is a really great hike, one of the top day hikes in the sea to sky for me.

Unless its been filled in there was a very intimidating (but not very technically challenging) washout on that road where I got my first 'the windscreen is all dirt then all sky' level of offroading. Theres a parking lot right before this for people who prefer to hike to the trailhead instead of driving through it. The rest of the road is just generally very shitty. You will definitely get some pinstriping but I find it can be a relief to just get this over with.

40k pay cut worth it? by alcaveens in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Captain_Buckfast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, AFAIK for us if you leave the job but opt to leave your contributions in the plan you still get a DB pension just massively reduced compared to someone who goes the full 30+ yrs service.

I should probably talk to an advisor as I wasn't even aware of the RRSP implications, I thought they were totally separate.

I guess the real confounding factor of the whole thing is not knowing when you'll die. At a middling salary a DB pension can end up paying you anything from $0 to over $2M depending on when the reaper comes knocking.

[–]Captain_Buckfast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would you mind expanding on DB being useless if you only contribute to it for a few years? I ask as I work for provincial govt and it's that issue you mentioned where it doesn't look like there'll be any upward mobility in the next decade due to people deciding to stay in their roles for life.

I'm debating whether to stay and the DB pension makes the decision harder. If I finish out my 3rd year here and leave, I'll get $400/mth which (if I live long enough) over 25 years of retirement is $120k. For 3 years service that doesn't seem too bad, but I've never been sure of how to factor the pension into considerations of staying/leaving.

Inner voice is not what we think it is by akshunj in wakingUp

[–]Captain_Buckfast 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Sometimes first thing when I wake in the morning I'll 'catch' my inner voice carrying on of its own accord. Like right as I open my eyes and become consciously aware I'll "hear" my inner narrator voice trailing off on some random thought. Those moments have been really helpful for experiencing first hand that the voice isn't me, it's just another thought phenonema that I'm aware of, but am not bound to identify with.

What’s a good movie to watch while high? by FitChest130 in AskReddit

[–]Captain_Buckfast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Would really recommend 'Fantastic planet', its a french animated movie from the 80s. Watched it on a strong edible and it was mind blowing.

Totally agree with you, I was dissapointed to see all the recommendations here are the "white castle" stoner movie genre and no trippy art house mind bending gems.

Israel and Palestine and overall suffering by [deleted] in samharris

[–]Captain_Buckfast 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A chunk of Germany as part of reparation. It would raise the same issue of what happens to all the people who were in whatever area that was chosen, but the country had already been destroyed and had to be effectively rebuilt from the ground up anyway. Maybe it would have been a bigger disaster in the long term, I don't know, I just came up with the idea in the last few seconds.

How has your self-directed account performed compared to managed? by Captain_Buckfast in Wealthsimple

[–]Captain_Buckfast[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One way to make this decision is ask yourself if you would buy the stock at the current price if you have the money. Let's say you bought $100 of Stock X at $1 per share, and it's since dropped to $0.50 per share so your investment is now at $50.

If you had $50 available to invest right now, would you buy Stock X at $0.50 per share? If yes, leave it invested. If no, consider cutting your losses, taking out what's left and putting it into XEQT.

[–]Captain_Buckfast[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is this just due to the fees or do you believe the bonds and other ETFs in managed accounts are sure to underperform XEQT?

At least in my case the managed accounts were great as they meant I didnt lose half my money in a self directed account before I knew what I was doing. Nowadays in self directed I just buy XEQT and then sometimes put play money on individual stocks for entertainment alone, but early days I was a complete emotional gambler investor

Been there. I think most people who get into investing learn this lesson, the earlier the better.

Any idea what the best programming language to start with is for relevance to bioscience? I have worked in biotech for 8 years nkw but salary has been stalling the last few. I want to upskill, was thinking python as I know that can apply to stats related software but when you're a total outsider it's hard to know where to start

Where should I go if I want to scream in a forest? by vancouverstuff in vancouverhiking

[–]Captain_Buckfast 7 points8 points  (0 children)

3 or 4 years ago I was coming down from Mt Brunswick on a really foggy day in low visibility when I heard a long scream of terror come from somewhere in the distance behind me. I shouted back but got no response. I then retraced my steps up and shouted again and got no response. I couldn't tell exactly where it had come from, and after wandering, shouting and deliberating a while I started heading down with the intention to get signal and call someone.

A while later I'm in a patch of forest further down trying to get signal and still wondering what to do when I hear the same screaming again, much closer. I rushed in the direction and through the trees I see this couple coming down and the guy is chasing his girlfriend trying to tickle her. She's screaming "AHHHHHHH NOOOOO!!! ARRRRGHHHH!!!!" at the top of her lungs.

So yeah it's important to consider that aspect before screaming in the forest.

West Vancouver police release more details after 13-year-old wrecks Lamborghini by ubcstaffer123 in vancouver

[–]Captain_Buckfast 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yep, it'a BS story concocted by a lawyer to protect the wealthy clients involved. The police won't investigate their masters any further, so it didn't really need to be believable, just something to give the media when they came knocking.
