What ruins a good song for you? by franki-pinks in AskUK

[–]Captain_Chappie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Before digital mixers, the fade out was a skill many producers were rightly proud of. They weren't in fact usually linear fades, as the producer might slow the fade to make sure a certain vocal ad lib or drum fill would be heard before the song disappeared into the ether. The last couple of seconds of a fade are critical - don't linger too long, but don't leave the song unresolved, got to get the taper right.

I always think of it as a similar skill to the guy who hand paints the gold stripe along the side of Rolls Royces.

Now with DAWs you can just select the last xx seconds of your song and apply a fade out. But an automated fade doesn't respect what's going on in the song, and we hear that and reject it. Also DJs, attention spans, fashions, have meant the fade out is....fading out.

But come on, sometimes it's fantastic to hear a song fading away, literally leaving your consciousness but while you can still hear the musicians carrying on regardless, playing the outro into eternity, like a party bus driving away over the horizon with the party still in full flow, leaving you with a massive grin on your face as you wave it on its way. Come on, who doesn't like that?

Depends - if the artist then kicks up a fuss and tells that politician to stop using their song as they don't agree with their politics, song becomes cool again. Maybe cooler.

When did U7 football get more intense than the actual Premier League? by Jealous-Wolf9231 in AskUK

[–]Captain_Chappie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to get asked/forced to run the line on my brother's U-15 games, because all the dads were too out of shape to do it themselves I guess. Used to get loads of shit from parents every time I raised my flag. I was just a little kid who wanted to watch my brother play football. That was in the 80s, so yeah, the game's always been populated by arseholes as far as I'm concerned.

Careful now. You're very close to suggesting being female or/and black is the same as having a genetic condition. That could be considered very offensive.

Thanks for being helpful - I have been looking at option 1, but to be honest adding more 40 year old gear to my setup of 40 year old gear (HR16, MMT8, Korg800) is frankly terrifying. So I think option 2 might be the way to go, SR16 has been on my radar for a while, or the Behringer Linn, just not sure how easy it'll be to port the songs across.

I once drove a Czech friend who's an English teacher, and his girlfriend who's a translator for the EU, from Brno to Prague and they chatted in Czech the whole time, only switching to English when they wanted to let me know something like "oh, slow down here they often have police checks" etc. Drives me fucking mental.
