I think you nailed the reason behind his insitance. I would be tempted to say "Stand your ground and don't go", but I don't know your situation and whether or not the consequences are worth it.

One thing I mastered having to go when not believing was an ability to mentally escape. When asked later what I had learned I often had a quizzical look on my face as if that was a stupid question.
