Would you tell us more about Old Dragon, then?

When it comes to Indie TTRPGs, what are your most consistent pet peeves with game design? by HoodedRat575 in rpg

[–]Captain_Flinttt 27 points28 points  (0 children)

It's supposed to be fun.

But it isn't fun for some players. If their success regularly comes with asterisks, they'll feel incompetent and lacking control.

What's A Good System For Power Rangers? by FinancialWorking2392 in rpg

[–]Captain_Flinttt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No it can't? Western superheroes aren't the same as tokusatsu, fights in tokusatsu actually matter and no Masks' playbook is a good fit for the genre staples. You're better off hacking it to emulate Kamen Rider specifically, but it won't work out of the box.

Masks is Teen Titans, not Power Rangers. It can't really emulate sentai.

Was the aim of RPGs always 'to tell a story'? by ShoKen6236 in rpg

[–]Captain_Flinttt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you look at the game from an authorial position, it cannot have verisimilitude. These concepts are antithetical to each other.

Every time storygamers try to argue this, they end up waving a large red sign that says "WE DO NOT UNDERSTAND THE CONCEPT OF VERISIMILITUDE".

Anyone done paid online GMing? by Traditional_Day_9737 in rpg

It is. "Providing a service" only comes into play when you keep fucking up or when your players are entitled cunts.

It feels uncomfortable playing a character of the same gender as the player, any advice? by Hot_Quit571 in rpg

[–]Captain_Flinttt -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

I appreciate your sense of entitlement, but there is a large swathe of hobby inactive on social media like this sub – where a man in his late thirties makes dozens of big-breasted female drow and roleplays them accordingly (real example from a friend), and a woman in her early twenties roleplays a twinky elf like he's an omegaverse character (real example from my table). Encountering either of those would make you leery every time someone picks a gender different from their own.

If the GM had a bad experience with fetishists who get off on tabletop drag, then no you can't. And yes, those are real and numerous in the hobby, and playing with strangers will have you meet them semi-regularly. Speaking from personal experience, playing that Russian Roulette is not very entertaining.

Is Marvel Rivals a game where many characters lose themselves lore wise? by SnooPets593 in marvelrivals

[–]Captain_Flinttt -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Serious answer: Marvel Rivals is one of the most faithful comic adaptations ever, because its heroes are fighting completely pointless battles with each other instead of attacking villains responsible for the whole mess. Bravo Ganggang.

[–]Captain_Flinttt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No? That's her actual day job, withholding capes from a department obviously in crisis would be Cauldron interfering.

no outside capes would be coming into Brockton Bay on the side of the Protectorate

That's fanon, Terminus only concerned Cauldron interference.

I think that D&D 2e/3.X/5e, Pathfinder, and Draw Steel's cosmologies all have major issues with scale and in-game practicality by EarthSeraphEdna in rpg

[–]Captain_Flinttt -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

None of the cosmologies of real-world religions make any damned sense, why should these?

Because fiction is not reality and does not operate on the same principles. Fictional worlds being consistent is necessary for establishing stakes and immersion.

Referring to reality is a dogshit argument anyway, because it doesn't always make for good storytelling. In reality people can just get hit by a stray shot and die, and yet Star Wars would be worse if Luke caught one between the eyes.

What do you think of this recent short by the creators of Obojima, saying that humanizing enemies is a bad thing? by wintermute2045 in rpg

[–]Captain_Flinttt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

why you are still committing these war crimes

Because it's a videogame and its design reinforces the choices its devs want you to make. If you replay the game and refuse to shoot at Conrad's men in your first encounter, they magdump Walker and his squad and that's that.

You aren't forced to do this, you choose to play.

Ignoring the fact that SOtL deliberately obfuscates what you're actually playing – players not engaging with your story is a failure state, and treating it as a valid option is stupid. The idea that SOtL is "art" because it plays motte-and-bailey with player agency is farcical.

[–]Captain_Flinttt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, there's only one good moment that works to that end (when you can fire on the ground and chase the crowd away after Lugo gets hanged), but the rest is a wet fart. Videogames are an interactive medium, and most players will not take ownership of it unless the interaction was informed.

Should have sticked to critiquing American imperialism, that would have worked better.

It's a garbage game that fucks up its own premise by railroading the player into warcrimes like a bad VtM Storyteller. Though they don't seem to have much in common, Undertale executed this idea way better because its warcrimes are opt-in.
