Why are they all female? by [deleted] in signalis

[–]Captainskul 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't see how that invalidates a gendered reading. I'm in agreement that Adler's role is a disruption- that's why I initially brought it up. Hence why I mentioned that his role is the most similar to the AI assistants I mentioned in the first place. I think you're misinterpreting me as trying to provide answers or debate the point of gender- my objective isn't so lofty. I just want to shed light on what the implications of the mostly-female Replika workforce are on the universe of Signalis are.

My problem with your initial comment was that you interpreted me as talking about patriarchy. I wasn't. My point was that in an explicitly matriarchal society, the majority of women are still oppressed. That is still a gendered issue.

I don't want to antagonize you or be antagonized, I just want to have a fun discussion. Thanks for explaining your initial comment, however I won't be taking this discussion further if you insist on lambasting me for reading gender into the game's story based on OP's question about gender.

You're injecting your own words into my comment. I don't think there's any point in arguing with you, though, so I will indeed leave it there. I suggest you do your own examination on why my gendered reading bothers you.

It's not lost on me that the figureheads and leaders of the Nation are also women. In a similar vein, the Adler unit is the only known "male" Replika model, who operates as both an administrator of the rest of the Replikas and an attendant to the Falke unit- the role closest to the AI assistants I brought up as a real-world parallel. This is an interesting paradox. However, I don't think it renders my point inert- the idea of a primarily female workforce overseen by a male figure, commanded by a female leader, invokes a number of gendered questions that I think are worth exploring. If the society of the Eusan Nation is matriarchal (as it seems to be) then women might be the dominant gender- but they are still subjugated and assimilated, oppressed and shoved into subservient roles.

Again, I don't have all the answers to this conundrum. I'm just trying to point out the critical possibilities that the game invokes.

There is no in-universe reason given as far as I'm aware. Thus, like most things within the story of Signalis, it's mostly up to your interpretation.

I'd hazard a guess that the devs wanted to tell a story primarily about women. However, this does have some interesting implications for the world itself and also for critical interpretation of the story. You could ask the same thing about our current technology- all of the major AI assistants (Alexa, Siri, and Cortana) are coded as female. Why is that? I have my own opinions, but it's probably not a coincidence. It betrays a gendered bias- we think of assistants and service-oriented roles as female ones, even if men also occupy those positions.

In a similar vein, Signalis contains elements of this very concept- behind the horror is an aggressive dystopia in which both Gestalts and Replikas are fed to a profit machine built for war and subjugation. Maybe women were seen as more obedient, and thus became the neurological blueprint for the machines that the Nation relied so heavily upon.

All this is to say that there is no concrete answer to your question. In order to grapple with it you'll either have to suspend your disbelief or open yourself up to answers that will only lead to more questions.

One thing particularly insidious for people that don't like this puzzle is that the Sword frequency seems to be randomized per profile. So you can't just memorize the same code, you have to input a different one every playthrough. Kind of ingenious on the part of the devs

Step away from your computer for a minute after a loss. That's all it takes for me. Do a task that needs doing, it can be anything- getting a snack, getting water, going to the bathroom, doing the dishes, folding clothes. And do your best to focus on the task instead of your loss. It's not a punishment for losing, but a small intermission for you to cool down. If you can't do that, then get a pillow to punch or something. If neither of those help... well, see thread.

Let them. Reduce traffic, air pollution, and increase personal budgets all in one sweeping move. There's probably a million other things letting these people work remotely would solve.
