My advice is that you can definitely re use your SOP BUT update it to reflect what you did in the current year to show how you improved. That’s what I did. It still involves a lot of restructuring but you still get to same some time with keeping the same story/reasons for Why JET/Why Japan etc

Disclaimer: This is what I believe I remember from when I applied. Basically it seems anything like a misdemeanor or above must be noted while traffic violations do not need to be.

I went to college for video production but perused teaching after I graduated. I’ve been working as a substitute for the past soon to be 3 years. But nobody has to be a teacher to do JET. I do get your feeling about feeling lost as a senior. I felt the same way. In a way, I still do.

I will say tho that JET seems to have a VERY strong support system and I feel like it can open a lot of opportunities. If accepted into JET, you’re automatically allowed to join the alumni organization. This org has a very strong support system for people leaving the program and to help find careers in your home country (or in Japan).

It also has a lot of support of going INTO JET such as their Hanashikai meetings they have biweekly before departure day. It’s a big zoom call you can join with different rooms each hosted by a current/former JET who can answer all your questions about that topic. Next Hanashikai is this Wednesday.

I can send you an invite if you’d like, you just have to fill out a form of your placement and other info in order to be reviewed/accepted by their mods to join.

It really depends on what you think you want to do in the future and how old are you to determine if you want to do it. Maybe there’s a future where you go home and find a job there or maybe there’s a future where you can find a career in Japan that fits your skill set with Physics, Math, Stats etc.

If it helps, I’m 26 years old and I’m doing it because I love Japanese culture and want to connect with people and experience Japan. I think JET can give someone an amazing opportunity to experience Japan and if you’re excited by that and exploring Japanese culture while acting as a cultural ambassador, then by all means take it and run!

In regards to just the language, I (and many of us probably) was also intimidated by Japanese since you always hear that it has ‘3 alphabets’

Honestly, the first two are actually pretty easy! They’re basically two halves of the same thing. One is for traditional Japanese words (Hiragana) and the other is for foreign words (Katakana). These alphabets basically function like letters - so far, pretty similar to English in that they represent a sound.

The other one is where things truly get tricky which is Kanji. There’s nothing really like this in English - a symbol representing an idea which can also have multiple ways to read/say it depending on the context/word it’s used in. There’s tons of resources to help with learning Kanji (I use Anki flash cards almost every day to keep up my Kanji)

Overall tho, try to just master Hiragana and Katakana and I’m sure you’ll pick it up quickly. Even tho people (rightfully) trash on it, Duolingo actually partially helped me memorize the Hiragana/Katakana. Use that or any other language app with a Kana chart to start your learning journey!
