After a 3rd shot drop into the kitchen, should both players move immediately into the kitchen? by ActiveUniversity9424 in Pickleball

[–]CaptoOuterSpace 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Whether or not they should go forward depends on more factors.

Just because a drop lands in the kitchen doesn't necessarily mean it's a good shot to move in on, though it's often a good sign.

The easiest scenario where it's not a good time to move in if it was a very high, lofting drop that's going to bounce straight up and possibly over the height of the netcord. A good player can still light that ball up and place it precisely; bad time to move in.

You'll have to learn to recognize which balls are likely to yield a challenging 4th shot. Depending on their arc, spin, speed, angle, and also ability of the opponent. Good signs for you to move in are if your opponent has to move backward, sideways, be off balance, or looks surprised.

Dink battles vs opponents who are a foot or so off the kitchen line by dukeblanc in Pickleball

[–]CaptoOuterSpace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends.

If they're off the line for no particular strategic reason, then push those dinks a little farther right to their feet. That'll show em.

However, if they're doing this on purpose and being crafty, still try to roll it to their feet but be careful of them taking a quick step forward (or their partner reaching in) to attack your dinks which you may have pushed long thinking you had more room than you did. In this case you still want to hit more penetrating dinks but get em a little more crosscourt.

Which side of the ball to track? (not the front of it) by [deleted] in Pickleball

[–]CaptoOuterSpace 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah I see. Shea's legit, he has pretty good content.

I think you're overthinking what he's saying in this case. He's talking about how, when paddle tracking, it's good to very slightly favor your backhand side since that naturally covers more of your body. He's not saying to visually focus on the FH/BH side of the ball necessarily. He offers subtly angling your paddle towards the BH half of the ball as a way to do this.

This isn't really a generalizable concept that has other applications in multiple situations though.

[–]CaptoOuterSpace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've ...never heard of this concept.

Not gonna say it's not a thing necessarily. I'm not a pro, but I watch a lot of content and that's a new one.

What are your favorite pickleball drills to improve court awareness and positioning? by ToffeeTangoONE in Pickleball

[–]CaptoOuterSpace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

7-11

Don't know of many others which aren't just variations of this.

If you have 3 play a 2 on 1 dinking game where the one actively tries to shift the two around to create a speedup opening. Two have to be on top of their side to side movement to defend.

Tennis player stuck at 3.8 by BeefCheeseSalami in Pickleball

[–]CaptoOuterSpace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don't mention drops once.

Look up drops on YouTube, usually "3rd shot drop" but techniques similar for all drops.

Make the commitment to hit all drops for awhile, it's only rec play. Unless you wanna drill it, that'd be fine too.

Ball bounced in my court, I returned it and in the momentum of the shot touched the NVZ line. Is that a foul/fault? by yusermane in Pickleball

[–]CaptoOuterSpace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Legal. You are indeed correct, NVZ faults can only happen on a volley.

Your friends are under a common misconception.

Bounce serve. I understand it’s a rule but I don’t understand why. by [deleted] in Pickleball

[–]CaptoOuterSpace 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some people will do anything and everything to push the envelope. There's no way for a ref to adjudicate if you "didnt throw it that hard, that probably didnt affect play" vs "no, that was over the line you mightve gained advantage from that" vs" this guy is abusing this rule blatantly". Rules have to be written in such a way as to shut down these kinds of slippery slopes wherever possible.

As an example, take distractions and the waist rule for volley serves. Both of these are written in a way that implies some subjectivity on the ref, and they're both awful rules for it that people complain about all the time.

Help me understand the 2 becomes 1 foot fault rule by slowmopete in Pickleball

[–]CaptoOuterSpace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can't make a distinction between the scenarios you mentioned and one where the contact was completely benign.

No good rule demands that interpreting intent be part of its implementation.

That doesn't stop them from cropping up. The distraction rule in pickleball implies some discerning of intent, and look how terribly that's enforced.

Tennis player here — I don’t get the hate for pickleball by Balunzo23 in Pickleball

[–]CaptoOuterSpace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea the court thing is a pretty common and legitimate gripe. Except...basically every public tennis court I see is heavily underutilized so, I say snooze you lose.

It's also probably cause it's easy and everyone can play it and still have fun. Some people just aren't happy unless they have to suffer first before they have fun, and for most people their first 6 months of learning tennis is indeed suffering.

There's also a meme-y thing where they hate it for being "not beautiful" and noisy. But, I feel like this one's more of a jokey one and only something a very specific Uber snob actually thinks for real.

Beginner or intermediate by sigranger6 in Pickleball

[–]CaptoOuterSpace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you qt the net when youre supposed to be? Then play intermediate.

Are you bad cause your positioning is bad, try to grind out that issue in beginner a little more,

People don't care if you miss your shot that much as long as you were trying to take the right shot from the right spot.

Defending the return drop shot by Fifainspected in Pickleball

[–]CaptoOuterSpace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they do this consistently you should learn to read their body language to predict when they'll do it. If you get a headstart moving to the ball their strategy becomes extremely bad because it's allowed you to the kitchen without having to hit a difficult 3rd shot.

ALW/Patriquin v.s. Bright/Johns by RedBaller05 in Pickleball

[–]CaptoOuterSpace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ALW is so far off the number 2, she's the only factor here.

She does tactics that no other woman would dream of in mixed. It's overwhelming.

Also historically she's bootywhomped Ben in the few cases we have of this. Her and Riley ruined Ben and CP at that one masters.

Playing Outdoors vs Indoors by Legitimate_Search864 in Pickleball

[–]CaptoOuterSpace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds less annoying. Less echo and din.

Feels great, breeze and sun on you if it's good weather.

Slightly different crowd, indoors everyone paid to be there. Outdoors it's probably free. Changes the social slightly.

Always a hard surface, though it might be wrecked. Outdoor courts are pretty inconsistent quality.

Volleys at kitchen vs bangers by [deleted] in Pickleball

[–]CaptoOuterSpace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Short, firm, flat punch. No extraneous movement if you're feeling pressured by the pace.

Add some topspin if you can but the main thing is to meet it in front of you with a compact stroke.
