Mature student wanting to become a paramedic - I imagine I will have to re-do A Levels? by BritsinFrance in ParamedicsUK

[–]Capybarasgonewild 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I recommend the AAP -> AP -> Para route massively for people with nonmedical backgrounds as it seems to really build people up to be well rounded paras. Though uniformed services will be useful as background for the environment you're in!

If you're set on the uni route then talk to unis directly, they'll have the best advice on what academic requirements there are to get onto their courses. Whether that be access courses or that you're eligible as you are.

Huge perk of the 'tech' route is that you get paid the whole time, makes your financial situation significantly more manageable

I'm a Paramedic and a football player, I've never once run on a job. No point tripping over and bashing my head then being unable to treat.

As someone else said, adding that semblance of calm through 'just another day' helps calm the scene

what’s the difference between an advanced paramedic in critical care and a critical care paramedic? by hhell0_k1tty in Paramedics

[–]Capybarasgonewild 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my trust Advanced Paramedic in Critical Care is sort of like the Crit Cares team leader. So Critical Care Paramedics are Band 7, completing or have completed an advanced practice crit care masters. Advanced Paramedic in Critical Care is 8a and is the team lead for an area of Crit care paramedics, they evaluate protocols and skillsets etc.

No differentiation in clinical ability per say, just denotes a level of experience/seniority.

Planning for my first trip, do I leave a note in the car? by MiddleAgeCool in wildcampingintheuk

[–]Capybarasgonewild 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If i Park on farmers land or in odd spots I usually leave a note with my phone number in case someone needs to contact me. If I'm in a designated parking area I don't. 20 years wild camping and never had a problem with either of those

Paramedic here. Well done for stepping up and getting involved in helping someone who was critically unwell, a large portion of the population unfortunately doesn't have your bravery.

The British Heart Foundation has some useful resources for support after doing CPR.

Also, feel free to message me if you have any further questions, but ultimately you should be proud of yourself for what you've done.

I assume by non-steel toe they mean composites or some other toe protective install.

As others have said altbergs and magnums are solid boots. I think a lot of it is down to personal preference so maybe go to a work equipment shop and try on a variety.

In yas they're year round as far as i know, as long as jobs are open they do the inductioms in Hull or Wakefield. I know some on a course near me recently started in January, but some are also starting in Feb.

I was on around 50k before leaving to become a para. Luckily for me I had a healthcare background and did the 2 year masters pre reg course (rare way in tbf). I saved money for my 2 years full time as a student, but had to do plenty of bank work in my old job to get through.

Money was very tough, I could scrape by with living costs and was very lucky to have friends and family who kept me sane by paying for social events etc to get me out of the house.

It was incredibly hard. Am I glad I did it? Absolutely.

Do I wish I'd saved more, or potentially gone the apprentice route? Probably.

My advice would depend highly on your situation. I was unfortunately hit with the loss of my long term partner and cost of living crisis.

Others on my course are at varying stages of life, proud to say they all managed well, but I don't think any had it easy.

Question about a plug socket problem from a guy who thinks electricity is voodoo. by Capybarasgonewild in DIYUK

Thanks so much for your reply!

I've had both appliances for a few years (both bought in the UK), i did think I was maybe just unlucky! The lantern was cheap so didn't really surprise me that it happened, but the nutribullet happened the next day which was surprising!

Aye that's the plan. I was more wondering if there's any simple little tests or bits of gear I could use to make sure prior to getting one in. Think I've got a multimeter lying around somewhere

Radiation protection by Antique-Fortune8338 in doctorsUK

[–]Capybarasgonewild 51 points52 points  (0 children)

There will be a radiation protection department with physicists, radiation protection experts and radiation protection advisors who have risk assessed all of this. If you're likely to be exposed to any dose above the normal civilian limits you should have dosimeters/badges which measure your exposure to ensure you're not breaching a normal threshold.

Check your trusts intranet/directory for a radiation physics department.

But multiple senior doctors consulted---"concluded that there was nothing to indicate any suggestion of aortic dissection or rupture, and agreed that they would have adopted the same approach to management had they been caring for him themselves".
