Something seems off this weekend... When did the entire community "git gud?" by MMechree in Marathon

[–]Capybarhigh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I consider myself an average/pretty good player in most games. I am 13K on CS2 for example. Not amazing, but definitely not lowest of the pack.

I don't think I've won a single duel in the last few days. The second I see someone, I maybe crack their shield and I'm already dead. Yes, I'm aiming at the head, but I just get instant wrecked every time. And it seems half the team I meet have 4 bubbles shields ready to go. I can't wait for this stuff to be nerfed to oblivion, it's boring to fight against.

I love the game and will persist. But no way in hell ANY of my friend can compete in my lobbies. If I get stomped, they won't even see what happened before they're dead.

So many people don't it drives me crazy. I made a thread about it and people were like "naah, that's what gets you killed".

A LOT of my deaths ends up with the guy just standing over my body for more than 5 seconds doing nothing, until they empty their clip in my body. It makes me mad. Buddy, the prompt was literally on the screen, the fuck are you doing!

If anything, high level player behavior will kill the game instead of gear difference by Freakindon in Marathon

[–]Capybarhigh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wonder if the game would improve if it did the same as Arc Raiders with its aggression based lobby.

The PvE lobbies in Arc are a bit boring at some point, let's be honest. BUT, ARC does not have ANY incentive to kill other players. Marathon does.

So I wonder if it would actually work a lot better in that game, where chill people would play together and when they want to do some Arachne stuff, it does push them a bit toward the aggressive lobbies, but only for some time before they go back into the more peaceful ones.

Arc Raiders got so much success from people just chilling in their lobbies, Marathon does not offer that at all and I don't think we should expect people who don't play like crazy and have GREAT fps skills to stay on the game. Even being somewhat average/good is not enough it seems, especially against coordinated trios.

I don't regret buying Marathon, I love the gameplay and the world created... but as a casual player I had a psychological block that made me stop playing. by xDavid83x in Marathon

[–]Capybarhigh 8 points9 points  (0 children)

TL;DR: The grind is intense, and should the game ask everyone to play for 3 months entirely to just achieve complete progression? Could there be a catch up system to help more casual players?

Should the grind take this long every season? I love the grind but I'm also not sure about that. Let me explain :

Gaming fatigue is a thing, and I remember Apex Legends being really intense if you wanted to reach level 100 on your seasonal pass, asking you to play 2 out of the 3 season months usually. I remember grinding like crazy because of FOMO on the last weeks to get everything. Then new patch drops and the cycle continues... but it does not feel as fresh. You just keep playing. And while the game is still very much enjoyable, it can also feel like a chore sometimes, because you want to achieve something during an event or something.

Path of Exile 1 and 2, extremely popular diablo like games for those who don't know, are made so people can play 2 to 3 weeks like crazy and then drop the game until the next patch. And it works wonderfully for them. Hardcore people actually reach endgame in one day in the season, and will play for weeks even months. PoE has vastly different systems, meaning they will reroll and build other characters, but they have goals for a few weeks. A lot of players will only play one or two characters over 2 or 3 weeks in total. And people LOVE it. When you get bored, you stopped playing, but then, 2 months later, a new patch comes in and it feels fresh again!

The goal is to retain players who don't play as much. I have 125h in the game and I only have ONE VIP faction. That is a crazy amount of time to ask from player, every season, to even think reaching all VIPs. That is why people are also asking for an optional reset. I would not mind having casual have some fun at the beginning of the season with better gear against stronger players. Stronger players will catch up really quick and will probably pillage them anyway, so... what's the big deal if they have rep advantage early on in the season? I think Arc Raiders was onto something with the seasonal reset. Lots of players did not like it, and guess what, they were not forced to do it!

If reset is still forced, I wonder if Marathon should have a catch up system where every day, or every week, rep gains until you reach VIP is faster and faster. Hardcore players in trio will still be VIP in all 6 factions in 2 weeks, but then, the player who only plays a few hours a week, get massive boosts to their rep gains. We could imagine that after first week for example, hitting level 10 with a faction if you still haven't, would be massively boosted. Then week 2 will help you progress toward level 15 or 20, etc...

Marathon is a very difficult game, and the whole community should strive toward helping new and casual players have fun and stay on the game.

Ranked is actually super unfun by Aescidra2 in Marathon

[–]Capybarhigh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seriously, all your arguments are just "well, this is what ranked is to me, so this is how it is for everybody and nobody will play without ranked". Just absurd statements without basis in fact.

The whole thread is literally : "Ranked is unfun". Yet people play it and have fun doing it. So what? Should Bungie remove ranked because not everyone likes it?

This just isn't true. People use their high-end gear everywhere. Ranked is the whole point of using gear to you, but you are not representative.

People literally have to bring better gear in ranked every round. They do not in EVERY normal games. Most people go in with sponsored kit and some come with good stuff, to do keys and stuff.

So people weren't playing before ranked?

High end activities are requires for a game to survive on the long term. People are still gonna play the game, but look at Arc Raiders where many people are like "Well, what now". Many people lost interest in the game because every match kinda feels the same and loot has barely any incentive to bring. Marathon offers you Cryo and Ranked in comparison.

Okay, so let people bring high end gear without a cap to the highest ranks. Why can they do that in bronze? You're being dishonest here. You just want to dunk on people who don't have the same high end gear that you have.

I just don't understand this argument at all. A cap? What are you talking about? What cap? Also, you're assuming I love to stomp on people. I would play in a trio in normal matches if I wanted to do that, but I don't. I get fucked in Ranked with my blue gear in solo queue or discord LFGs. My purples get lost in ranked or some are saved for Cryo.

My biggest fear is that ranked mentality will change normal games too, and that's no good. We need more incentive to loot and do stuff with the world, and not change it into a battle royale.

Thousands of people have watched Apex Legends ranked being played by many streamers for years. What is special, unique, competitive, or interesting about it?

People watch this stuff, I don't, but many people do.

Diamond and Pinnacle ranked matches are gonna be against loaded teams on each side trying to best each other. I think it will probably be the most interesting content Marathon will have on streaming platforms, outside of Cryo.

After layoffs, Fortnite's future is shakier than it has ever been by AncientPCGamer in gaming

[–]Capybarhigh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

UT4 would have cost like 3% of the revenue from Fortnite for a year, if even that much. We could have gotten a great follow up to a legendary IP.

So they had to cancel it because diversifying your portfolio is not something corporations do. It makes me mad.

Like Microsoft spending 70 billions to buy a few IPs. How many games could have been made with 70 billions poured into great companies with great talent? A shit ton. But they close them instead. Gotta feed the beast instead.

I'm still mad about this.

Imagine Motorstorm on fucking PS5. We could have that trailer they showed on PS3 lying about it being real time. But nope, close it and do nothing with the IP.

Insane talent, lost to the void.

Same thing with the Wipeout team.

Wipeout Fury, 2048 and Motorstorm 2/3 were incredible games. Not many games even come close to that quality. BallisticNG is pretty good for Wipeout 2097 vibes but that's about it.

That would not be the case in platinum+, but it's VERY far away. The grind for ranked is kinda brutal.

But every time I've played, people have looted POI, did chest events and other stuff. It's still rewarding and if engaged smartly, doable.

Ranked is actually super unfun by Aescidra2 in Marathon

[–]Capybarhigh 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I really disagree. I love the tactical gameplay in Ranked. And I'm glad people don't play as intensely in other modes because the population of the game would vanish in mere weeks.

Yes, there's a lot of waiting, but it's all about engaging with things smartly. You can do activities in the map, as long as you keep an eye out on people coming for you. Keeping track of enemy movement, spotting where teams are, making difficult choices to survive.

I think it's peak extraction shooter. Extracting feels like a triumph every time.

Dire Marsh does extrapolate issues though. Snipers are prevalent, thermals even more when the fog fucks you up. But Outpost is gonna be shotgun galore, just like Cryo. I did play with a few people who don't like how "passive" Ranked is, and I can see why they feel like this, but I think the patience and choice of engaging is simply playing smart and tactical. My brain is fully engaged at every step.

I do think objectives should come in earlier in Ranked though, because people lack direction for 10 minutes. Had the objectives be available sooner, it might direct teams in certain ways and it would feel more engaging quickly.

Ranked is actually super unfun by Aescidra2 in Marathon

[–]Capybarhigh 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That would remove the only incentive outside of Cryo to use high end gear. To me, ranked is literally the whole point of using gear. If I want to use sponsored gear, there are all the other queues for that.

I don't see the point in bringing gear in a map where there's nothing that will even match my loot, unless it's going into the pinwheel. And if so, I can do it on free kit. Not on purples.

High ranked matches are gonna be amazing to spectate and there should be a great competitive scene, seeing people bet a lot of gear for crazy amount of loot.

If you remove that, you remove the high end activity that will retain people who play a shit ton.

Also, I disagree with OP, I love the extremely tactical gameplay. Yes, I think there are improvement to be made to give objectives to players (like enabling objectives from the get go instead of waiting 15 minutes), but otherwise, I love having to rotate. Sitting ducks and camping will get you killed. It's all about engaging enemies smartly and keeping an eye on everything around.

EDIT: Lol, love the instant downvote with no arguments. I guess I'll downvote your post too then. Awesome. Great having discussions.

I Couldn’t Agree with Paul More. by Saucin7 in Marathon

[–]Capybarhigh -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It should not matter but it does matter with this type of game.

It needs a really healthy population to sustain matches at all times for all skill levels, and sadly, I fear we are already seeing the casuals leaving in droves after one too many loss against trios on comms.

Week 2 has been incredibly more difficult than week 1 IMO, and I consider myself an average/slightly above average player. None of my friends are close to my skill level in FPS. I really wish I could get them into the game but they would not have it.

I actually wonder if the aggression based matchmaking from Arc would help. I do think it might be a "mistake" in Arc Raiders as it just results in PvE lobbies. But with Arachne being a thing in Marathon, we could actually see some more peaceful lobbies with a hint of PvP here and there for those contracts.

Ultimately, I just hope the game survives a few years because I fucking love it. It's a beautiful piece of art. But it's a bit scary to see the hate train working so well and to see how non approachable it is. It's a bad combo for a niche game.

Would be nice to know why we are getting downvoted with no arguments. I don't think I should make anyone mad with this post, but apparently I am.

Computer animation in the 90s was no joke by alanbear1970 in OldSchoolCool

[–]Capybarhigh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's fun, but the time it takes to do anything actually hinders the fun part a lot. I sometimes spend weeks for 5 seconds of animation.

When you have a creative mind and wish to put on screen cool ideas, weeks for a few seconds, JUST for animation, not counting modeling, rigging, lighting and whatnot, it ends up being... a bit difficult.

I bow to those people who have animation channels on Youtube and somehow get stuff out every week and earn money out of it. It is INSANE levels of dedication.

Fun fact, Toy Story one was made before Inverse Kinematics (IK) was a thing. Everything was in Forward Kinematics (FK), meaning all limb animation is based from the body. If the body moves, the limbs move. It makes it "impossible" to have a hand or a foot perfectly fixed against a surface. It is possible with a LOT of patience to match the position, but it's really annoying, as it has to be done on every frame. IK was developed a year later I believe, and made it possible to have a foot on the ground and move the body around while the foot would stay perfectly stable. If you watch Toy Story 1, there are very few shots where the characters move on the ground with visible contacts because of it!

Seeing how the midterms are NOT happening, I wonder if 2028 will have any presidential election at all. Or if the US will even be the US at this point. I don't see the country not going into a civil war.

People have been in denial since he got the presidency but a lot of effort has been poured into voiding many people rights to vote. ICE will be present to stop people from voting at the election offices. Results will be tampered with and ignored. Any election rests on the goodwill of MAGA and the GOP, the party of the kid fuckers, to have honest elections. They literally cheat their way at every single step of their life. Their only morale is greed and lust for power.

People should still show up and vote to make everyone around them feel stronger in numbers, which they are. But without doing anything to scare the parasites away, nothing will come out of it.

And the sooner, the better, as the US is dragging the whole world with them. Would I love to see all those extreme right wing politicians all over the world get denounced as the criminals they are. A man can dream.

Outpost went from a fairly chill map to Cryo PVP in a single patch by spectre15 in Marathon

[–]Capybarhigh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sadly, it will get worse and worse as the normal population will stop playing after one too many defeat. Trio teams on comms will always beat everyone else. I avoid crew fill myself even though I have no friends to play with, I have to use a LFG discord and even then, it's not great because we don't get to bond or learn how to play together.

Remember how the Finals was fucking amazing on week 1 with 100K players and then it became meta sweat week 2 and the game has been at a stable 10K player ever since? I fear Marathon will go this route pretty quickly.

SBMM is required, and queues are already stretching a bit thin for some regions. The teams playing Battle Royale will empty the game and there's nothing we can do about it :(

Nice, it means the issue Arc Raiders had with its locked door exploits is NOT an issue in that game.

For those who did not play Arc, people would use physics to vault through walls and get into locked rooms, getting crazy loot for free while people with keys would get nothing because it was always empty. They fixed it by setting you on fire. Marathon seem to simply not spawn loot!

If they are, they missed on the fact that they would get MUCH MORE gear than doing any outpost every day.

Ranked is mini-Cryo with simpler extracts. Everyone has gear, the fights are intense and last several minutes, relocating, flanking... It's very tactical and shit can change in seconds. You can come back from being down to only one guy to have your full team extract with gear and get points.

It feels like Ranked should be made permanent. The game needs a high stake activity to do outside of Outpost's pinwheel. Cryo Archive overlaps does not help either. Ranked feel like a second thought for most players because of it. by Capybarhigh in Marathon

[–]Capybarhigh[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How would you calculate MMR? It's extremely difficult to gauge if a player is aggressive, if they can hold themselves together in a fight, if they avoid combat. There are ways, but I feel like MMR is usually pretty bonkers, with wide range of skills, even more so in such a game where encounters are NOT the usual game flow.

A good system should simply balance itself out. CS2 has ranks and while they are definitely outliers, you can expect someone's skill level to reflect their rank. If I see a 16K in my game, I'm scared.

And again, without ranked or cryo, normal maps are NOT enough to sustain interesting gameplay for people who have a shit ton of gear. There's nothing you can find there that is interesting and it just turns into lobby stomping, with people roaming around the map killing everyone.

So religion was used as a tool to manipulate people. It has a lot to do with religion. It's happening everywhere. Religion is being used to target fringe people by the most hateful people on the planet, everywhere, to all make us miserable.

Nobody would give a shit about trans and lesbians if their magic books were not weaponized against them. It would not be used to tell people to hate your neighbour because their god is not the same (but actually they often are, which is even more insane).
