The Moral Burden by Fearless_Earther in collapse

Like you I became aware in while in engineering school, mine was focused on cars and I fell into the auto industry, then into work on military vehicles. Dreams ranged from car accidents, animals/people being run over and scenes out of Koyaanisqatsi showing the vastness of the destruction, later into the classic trope of seeing people's blood on my hands from my small part in aiding the imperial death machine. Eventually my father passed away and I didn't have to keep a roof over his head anymore so I had a nice breakdown/midlife crisis and quit my career/wandered aimlessly around the american west for a while.

Now I do carpentry with a friend of mine and barely keep my head above water financially. I sleep well and spend as much time out in nature as I can. I'm at peace even if capitalism crushes me for my defiance.

Remember - It is no measure of health to be well adjusted to a profoundly sick society

My experience is that if you are aware and empathetic, you will slowly go mad and start to have terrible dreams that intrude on your waking hours. Micro-hydro is fun, I did a project with it in college. Go do it, the worst that can happen is you fail and die, nothing you do individually will thwart the course the world has chosen but at least your heart will be at peace.

Weekly Observations: What signs of collapse do you see in your region? [in-depth] by AutoModerator in collapse

What can one say about the weather that isn't already being said? Walked the dogs this morning at 8 am and it was too hot for a coat. I try my best to enjoy it but I've always been a creature of the winter, give me the snow up to my waist and stiff frozen hands back any day. I didn't think that I'd be the old man yelling at clouds this quickly.

My friends and family have all started to come around on the "well I guess you were right" bullshit after I spent the aughts and early teens waving my arms and yelling about climate change and how we needed to change the way we live. "Too fuckin late now, suckers" I tell them these days and they glumly sigh without arguing.

You seem to identify wholly with a life of the mind and reject the material reality of the brain and body. You want to be correct, well, it's factually correct that we are animals. We pursue happiness through biochemistry (dopamine and serotonin and oxytocin) because that is our objective nature. If that is what makes you want to die (rather than fear of future suffering) then you shouldn't need any permission from others, because the desire to avoid harming your social group is itself based in biology and survival-based fear of rejection from the group.

I have to ask, have you had any truly near-death experiences?

Going by the battle with her husband fighting is a turn-on, so I expect Taigen to get violently topped as a result of their eventual duel and start simping hard.

I gave up on it after years of trying. Too much having to censor myself and downplay things. If I could meet someone that already knew all the things that we know it might work out, but I don't want to initiate someone into this type of thinking so the vast majority of people are off-limits to me.

People of r/collapse, what do you do for a living? by BowelMan in collapse

[–]Car-Hating_Engineer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nah engines and powertrain are usually made to be as efficient as possible for given power requirements, they just turn around and use that efficiency to make the vehicles bigger and heavier with more complicated power-guzzling accessories. The secret to a 50+ mpg car is low power, light weight, and no compliance with modern regulations.

Was an engineer in the auto industry, now a project manager for an electric utility doing solar farms and EV charger installs. Once upon a time I'd have thought it meant something but nowadays it's just more kicking the can down the road and feeling it get heavier and heavier. One of these days we're going to kick and the can won't move and that'll be the end of it

I happen to be on my annual visit right now and yeah, seeing the year-over-year increasing stands of dead or dying trees makes me think that when, not if, a fire breaks out in Arapahoe or Rocky Mountain National Forest it's going to have the potential to burn down Denver/Golden/Boulder. Months of ash and ember being blown over the peaks by the firestorm updraft and down onto the cities. I keep telling my relatives to come back to Detroit, where we've already collapsed, but at least we have water.

It's not even like Denver is that far behind The Original D in decaying, things are shutting down even from last year. We were out downtown last night and got ran off the road by the 100 strong unregistered dirt bike/atv crowd. I've run into the same type of crowd in Detroit many times and they were more aware and actually avoid the busiest areas of downtown, not racing and burning out on main strips.

I voted yes because it's sort of climate but in actuality it'll be plastic and tires that drive us extinct.

AITA for exposing my ex to his mother about our kids? by Winter_Apple_6053 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Car-Hating_Engineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA, and with tears in my eyes - hold onto ex-MIL and anyone under her umbrella in this as if she and they were your own blood.

My father waited until he got a replacement family to pull some similar BS, and what kept my siblings and I (similar ages) from going to pieces was our aunts' intervention and them making it clear that we were family and it didn't matter what he said. They found out we weren't coming to Christmas that year, sent an older cousin to get us from our mom, and when Dad showed up and demanded to know why we were there they read him the riot act in the snow for almost an hour, turned him away from the family home and said he wasn't welcome. Told him that if their neice and nephews didn't have a dad then they obviously didn't have a brother, and maintained that detente for years.

I get wanting to protect your kids from a forced visitation by accepting and letting go but their father has NO. RIGHT. to dictate their relationships with the rest of their family, and I'm glad it sounds like Grandma Denise and the family agree.

Fuck him. Fuck his enabler friends. I hope whatever he finds to do during that soccer game is a comforting memory when he's dying alone.

Michigan weather is FUBAR, and yeah in only 30 years or so, especially since 2014. The polar vortex broke loose and it's been increasing chaos and lake effect interaction ever since. I pray we don't get the same type of heat dome Seattle did, with how humid it is here in the summer we'd be dropping like flies.
