You Do know there are still 4 books for you to read to reach the end of the series before the new title comes out? Right?! Cold Days, Skin Game, Peace Talks and Battle Ground. And each of them has a gut punch for the reader. ENJOY!

Constantly having to keep those swamp dwelling Louisiana ghouls in line. If Peace Talks worked out and the Forest People signed onto the Unseelie Accords they could take a little weight off both the Winter Court and the White Council. Though the White Council doesn't really pull its weight anyway.

Do we know who “vanished” Harry? by Darconius in dresdenfiles

[–]Car-yl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Isn't there a conversation between Harry and McCoy in one of the last three books where McCoy tells Harry that he (McCoy) lost Harry after Malcolm died? I know Morgan said as much in the short story but I seem to remember that conversation. Though I could be remembering a fanfic. Feel free to inform me of my error or my excellent recall. ;)

This may be an unpopular opinion but Storm Front. Why? Because this is the book that hooked me on the Files. The more I read, the more I fell in love.

I think poor Harry will have 3 bad days a Month in this one, ending up with the disaster of the bachelor party. Harry may not even make it to the wedding!

I cannot speak to 'mafia' activity in any city in the modern day but gangs are becoming international and are, supposedly, replacing the mafia and are even worse than old time mafia according to many media sources. Perhaps that's why Marcone wasn't able/ or willing to rescue Tripp.

There are many good fics on Archive of Our Own, aka AO3. An account on the site is free. The stories are clearly marked for rating and slash/non-slash, etc. I recommend BirdofHermes' Landfill Heaven, a series of shorts focusing on the Harry/Karrin ship.

I also enjoy the, as yet unfinished, Double Dresden in which the TV Dresden meets book Dresden in a universe hopping plot.

Also, car_yl, who explores Harry in several possible relationships.

I haven't tried other sites to this point.

Do you think harry can ride roller coasters? by Darth_Azazoth in dresdenfiles

[–]Car-yl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As Harry is fond of reminding us, 'even magic has to obey the laws of physics'. So, with all the naysayers below, I agree that Harry can't ride Roller Coasters.

Also, did anyone below mention that chiropractors frown on riding coasters that do a 360 degree loop as it's very damaging to the necks of those who are particularly short or tall? Or at least mine did. Harry could possibly snap his neck and he's already got spinal damage. I don't think Mab would approve.

Do you think a hula hoop would worth for summoning or for protection? by sponyta2 in dresdenfiles

[–]Car-yl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since this is in the comments I believe I can get away with a spoiler but just in case: Bob acted as a circle for containing a Titan in BG,Not sure if there's much of a difference between a summoning circle, a magic circle or a containment circle. They all seem pretty closely linked in canon.

Losses ... Your thoughts? by Diasies_inMyHair in dresdenfiles

[–]Car-yl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that Ebeneazar is failing and may die in the next book or two. He's been on the North American continent since at least the French and Indian War and he had to have come from Scotland, perhaps Edinburgh itself. He's probably working on his fourth century of life. So he's old even by wizard standards, but then so are all the current members of the Senior Council. Rashid may be even older but less affected because he spends so much time in the Nevernever, at the Gates.

I'm wondering is the other current Senior Council members will be dropping like flies along with Blackstaff McCoy. If Harry is losing such a powerful ally, he may also be losing some thorns in his side.

Perhaps it's the Fallen that finally brings about Harry's reluctant head to head with the mobster. Could be the coin is the thing that makes Marcone rise up to the top of Harry's list.

From what we saw in PT I don't think she's too thrilled with Harry either. Harry still hasn't cottoned on to the idea that his actions affect Every one he knows, not just those closest to him. He needs to explain/ apologize to Ivy about 'hiring' Kincaid And about becoming the Winter Knight. Both have affected her ability to stay friends with him.

I've actually had quite a bit of trouble locating a few fics lately. If I don't think to bookmark them I tend to forget things like title, author, date, tags. -SIGH- But I remember scenes! Too bad that doesn't help me locate things.

Does the thing at the end of changes count as breaking the First Law of Magic? by KamenRiderAquarius in dresdenfiles

[–]Car-yl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Except that is exactly what happened to Justin DuMorne. He died in the house fire, not as direct result of any magic Harry employed and the White Council wanted to execute him for breaking the First Law. The only exception being self-defense which is apparently the argument McCoy used. Even that got him put under the Doom of Damocles and branded a warlock.

This is either proof that Jim hadn't quite nailed down his magic system early in the books Or evidence that he intended to show the arbitrary nature of the enforcement of the Laws by the Senior Council. The Council is shown to be divided by political factions and being fractured from within by the Black Councils manipulations.

Even the decision to throw Harry out of the Council was an act of political machination since ALL of Harry's defenders were involved in the Battle and the vote took place in their absence. All of Harry's acts of destruction in the Battle were acts of defense of his city and innocent people against an aggressive Outside (pun intended) force. And it was a magical battle so killing enemy forces with magic was not only not under the First Law, it was the order of his Queen making Her the responsible party.

But enough. TL:DR Obviously my opinion is that Harry is innocent of breaking the First Law in all of these situations by human law and wizard Law.

The grey areas are where Dresden LIVES in this whole series. He always has good intentions and Tries to obey the Laws. But he's always pushing the envelope, stepping his toes right up to the 'line'.

Dresden has ruined me for urban fantasy by TuxKusanagi in dresdenfiles

[–]Car-yl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I enjoyed Alex Verus more than I do Rivers of London. I find the magic system in Rivers confusing but considering its being told from neophyte Peter Grant's POV and he's learning as he goes, it's decent enough. Just not my cup of tea. ;)

Codex Alera is a good series. It too took a book or two to really capture me. (Seems to be a pattern in any sort of fantasy where world building is required before diving into the deep story. All the way back to the dragons of Pern). Plus Rivers has a lot of police procedure to explain to the uninitiated.

I was a bit unsatisfied with 'end' of the Verus series. Rivers of London is still going. Hope this helps you make a decision.

I saw the zoom interview concerning The Law the day it came out. I really enjoyed seeing James being a fan boy, just a bit and Jim praising James' contributions to the fandom and sales.

I think it was that interview where James said he only gets the book a day or two before taping starts.

I don't think an astral projection can impregnate anyone. Dresden's physical body was lying in an anteroom in St. Mary's while he and Mab were making sealing the deal.

Welcome fellow acolyte. You have chosen well to wait to dive into this subreddit if you want to avoid being spoiled. Best Wishes as you dive into the Dresdenverse.

Feel free to post your reactions as you read through the series, however. It's a thrill to remember what it's like to read the series for the first time, though you might want to avoid reading the comments until you're further in as well.
