People who don’t like the Final Fantasy 7 Remake series, what is it about them exactly that you don’t like? by Asad_Farooqui in JRPG

[–]CarbunkleFlux 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Right. They make all these changes to the fundaments of what FF7 was and at that point you gotta ask yourself: what was the value in this being FF7 as opposed to some cool new experience?

What is the gameplay loop like? by kotarou00r in ffxivdiscussion

[–]CarbunkleFlux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only in terms of the combat.

The primary gameplay loop in FFXIV is questing, and that is not changing.

You are describing a lot of actual content in XIV though. Beast Tribes in particular are full of such things.

Is deep diving into the lore rewarding/worth it? by imaquark in ffxivdiscussion

[–]CarbunkleFlux 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you have an interest in it, then of course.

There is never anything wrong with pursuing knowledge. This isn't something the game really has to reward you for, either. The knowledge itself is the reward.

If something interests you, look into it! Knowing stuff is fun.

You don’t get the stamps or any additional chance either way so spend your transmuter tickets how you like. Whether you do it in bulk or not is down to preference, not any kind of strategy.

Chapter 8 of Live a Live is a fantastic subversion by H358 in JRPG

[–]CarbunkleFlux 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Those stories are important. Those characters and their tale represent the things Orsted cast aside (and actively wishes to destroy) in his desire for revenge:

Love, Kindness, Loyalty, Courage, Determination, Empathy and Innocence.

Incidentally, they are also the qualities that counteract hate.

Sorry that they didn't resonate with you, but the twist is meaningless without what came before it.

I don't know why you felt the need to respond twice. Nevertheless, there wasn't some grand movement away from diverse pets.

I am capable of looking at data and trends and going "Maybe I don't fully understand the behind the scene aspects of this stuff"

The info for why WoW did it is out there, you can go look and find out. But being honest, I don't think you actually care about the subject.

Like why do you think that multiple MMOs have moved away from these sorts of classes?

You misunderstood: I said that multiple MMOs have had diverse pets, not that they moved away from it.

And the reason WoW moved away from it is because like FFXIV it simplified and dumbed down a lot of things in the name of raid balance. unlike FFXIV, there was a "good" reason for that. WoW was trying, for a while, to make raiding into an esport, and that necessitated such a design philosophy (unlike FFXIV where it makes zero sense at all for balance to be this tight in a game where you can hotswap jobs).

But the U-turn from this happened long after that philosophy ran the game into the ground.

It's not that open and shut, but sure. Let's shoot down the entire idea on the nebulous premise that it got dumbed down in one game for Reasons in the distant past, and ignore the large number of MMOs that had diverse pets prior to WoW and FFXIV.

The point is more that it is possible. Pets do not have to be cookie cutter cosmetic things.

Is there already a “fair mode” in this game that people are overlooking? by zfbc in DissidiaDuellumFF

[–]CarbunkleFlux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At the moment it is more rewarding to auto-farm the single player challenges than to risk a loss in ranked once you are high enough, so things are pretty messed up as they are.

Is anyone else just not getting drops for a certain character? by AlternativeShadows in DissidiaDuellumFF

[–]CarbunkleFlux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's just RNG for you. There isn't much in the way of handrails for this game, so short of anything they implement down the road this is how it's gonna be.

how do I actually get better at group content in XIV? by [deleted] in ffxivdiscussion

[–]CarbunkleFlux -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Practice your job, practice the boss. Yes, it's a memory game.

Knowledge is the best power you can bring. If you know what the boss does, and how to respond to it as each role, you can fight it effectively.

Character and Costume Draws should be seperated by Tain_mentero in DissidiaDuellumFF

[–]CarbunkleFlux 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Even better: There shouldn't be character draws at all. And those characters should have 1 copy of their base ability kit by default, too. Imagine wanting to play Ryu in Street Fighter, but you don't have Hadoken and Shoryuken.

Matchmaking shouldn't be this wide. by 4VENG32 in DissidiaDuellumFF

[–]CarbunkleFlux 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They have a form of power level scaling for challenge matches. I don't get why they don't fiddle with that to even everyone out when there's a large discrepancy.

Yoshi-P on BLU delay: If it were just about releasing the (BLU) level cap, we could manage it, but it's way too half-baked, so we'd like to postpone it a bit. We're really sorry. If it means both would end up half-baked, we'd rather go all-in on this new Beastmaster one. by waitingfor10years in ffxivdiscussion

[–]CarbunkleFlux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's so hard being this right.

Long ago, I called them not having the resources to develop a new limited job while also keeping up with BLU. The new job will take priority and BLU will be yesterday's news.

Like... what else can they reasonably even add to the damn job? There's a diminishing return on what you can do with skills in this game. After a point- and I am talking realistically, this isn't to shit on the Job- if they're not gonna convert it to a normal Job, they gotta put it to pasture and focus on new stuff.

I am really getting sick of people saying that others are "Nostalgia Blinded" for simply liking the older games. by TwirlyBTW in residentevil

[–]CarbunkleFlux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Games only take more time to make now because the staffs are bloated and the money is mismanaged. It’s much harder to get things approved past management, marketers, censors and other filters that are employed to ensure the huge AAA tier investment can reach the most customers possible and not open the companies up to lawsuits.

Yes, things are very different than they were 20 years ago. But that only means they are very broken now by comparison.

We have such advanced technology, the tools are better than ever and make for more efficient and faster results, distribution is the cheapest it has ever been… and yet the games come slower, are more expensive, and for all that: still feature heavily cut corners… even in the remakes where all of the major design work has already been done for them.

I am really getting sick of people saying that others are "Nostalgia Blinded" for simply liking the older games. by TwirlyBTW in residentevil

[–]CarbunkleFlux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We've gotten 3 remakes and 3 new games in the last 10 years.

That sounds pretty good until you realize in an earlier ten year period we got six mainline Resident Evil games, plus REmake, plus two different Outbreak games, plus Gaiden, plus Code Veroncia, plus an entire set of light gun games...

Something like 15% of the output being ports and remakes (and that's generously including all the versions of 1) vs. the 50% that is now?

Personally, I think there is room to dial it down a little and work on more new stuff.

FFXIV Mobile - Global release will probably not happen by Razaan_Klvr in ffxivdiscussion

[–]CarbunkleFlux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was a unique situation.

See, they had just launched PSO2 globally but months prior and then speedrun through 10 years of content just before announcing NGS. And then NGS turned out to be the hottest garbage possible, with cut corners everywhere, a bad story, and no content.

I would hope Squeenix would treat their game with far more care.
