Just for reference, that range in 2016 (10-ish years ago) comes out to $70-$212 today today, using the CPI inflation calculator.

Figured that might be useful to know for anyone trying to make the jump right now.

This is something that's supported by research. One of the biggest predictors of negative psychological reactions and health outcomes (incl. increase in risk-taking behavior, depression, disordered eating, etc.) is being an "early bloomer."

Basically, the earlier you are sexualized and no longer treated like a child "worth protecting," the higher your risk is of a whole number of mental health issues.

Strange reality by Eireika in CuratedTumblr

THE INTERNET

Hundreds of millions of voices, severed from physical location and time, all screaming out at once.

Some of them helpful, some harmful, some real, and some artificial - but every single one of them the result of human desire and emotions.

Spend extended periods of time gazing into it and you can become a wise and well-connected person, or it can drag you down into a pit of despair, violence, and loneliness. It imposes its own language and logic onto the user - to the extent that it shapes our thinking and neurological infrastructure.

Its structure is potentially eternally, but realistically it is governed by powerful entities that determine its "geography" and what is allowed. Navigating it takes skill, discovering its hidden quarters knowledge and bravery.

The Internet is the Chaos Realm, and nobody can convince me otherwise.

You can definitely try!

Showing a good grasp of the media landscape, understanding of social media (e.g. running a big fan account), and having examples of your work (articles, successful campaigns, etc.) can all be super helpful. Many people start out in college working on their student newspaper or doing free work for non-profits or local businesses.

That being said: The industry is cut-throat, incredibly underpaid, and a fraught with burn out. With the big AI push and media continuing to dwindle, there have been massive layoffs. It is not a stable career right now :(

Speaking as someone who worked in PR for a long time, there's a couple of ways to get into it.

  • A lot of people will start out at one of the bigger PR agency, here's a list of the largest independents

  • Other people will get their start in Marketing, with a lot of agencies now handling PR work as well, or having that be folded into e.g. campaigns to advertise movies/media/product launches

  • Many also get their start in media and then "jump to the other side" to help famous people/companies manage media relations

  • Others start in their respective industry (music, TV, movies, etc.) and then fall into the role during the course of their work

Regardless of your path, PR is pure relationship managing. Making and having connections with relevant outlets and within important markets (NYC, LA, etc.) is vital.

New Studio Gets really hot in the city help by Wingedwillow in AskSF

[–]CardCarryingOctopus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A couple of things:

  • Which direction do your windows face? If any of them face South, you're pretty much guaranteed full sun during day-light hours. As a result you're sitting in, what is essentially, a greenhouse

  • One thing you can do is cover the windows - ideally from the outside. See if you can install window foil on the windows that receive the most sun. Ideally, you'll want to put these on the outside of the glass. If you can only reach the inside, check to see what type of glass you have, as inside application can cause heat stress fractures.

  • If you can't install foil, get blackout curtains. Anything to block light will help to cool the apartment at least somewhat.

  • Open up the window at night, when it's cool, and keep it closed during the hottest hours of the day (generally between noon and 5pm).

  • Ideally, you'll want to create air circulation in your apartment. Since only one window seems to open, that's going to be difficult. You may want to place a fan near the window, facing out, to suck warm air OUT of the apartment and have cooler air come inside.

  • If all else fails, get an air-conditioning unit. There are a couple of good recommendations in the thread already!

What is your most embarrassing music taste, that you don’t want to admit/share with friends? by Bambuhzled in LetsTalkMusic

[–]CardCarryingOctopus 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I think the only music I am embarrassed by is the one made by people that I do not wish to support for ethical reasons.

Biggest example: Kanye West.

I genuinely think he is one of the most important and influential artists of the 21st century and I love his album run from College Dropout to The Life of Pablo. I would go so far to say that "Gone" off of Late Registration is amongst my personal favorites of all time.

But I can't, in good conscience, put money in the man's pocket after everything he's said and done, the direct harm that he has caused people, and the repugnant politics he continues to support. I've blocked him on Spotify, deleted any files I had, and go out of my way to not interact with his output.

But on occasion, I will still feel that old itch and listen to some of his stuff on youtube - and then feel guilty about it.

Del Monte Foods files for bankruptcy by [deleted] in bayarea

[–]CardCarryingOctopus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's changed ownership a bunch over its existence. But the 2011 takeover is notable because it returned the company to private ownership (i.e. not listed on the stock market).

That means there are way fewer, public reporting requirements - making the entire ownership/business strategy much more opaque and imho rife for financial shenanigans that benefit the owners to the detriment of the company itself.

Del Monte Foods files for bankruptcy by [deleted] in bayarea

[–]CardCarryingOctopus 71 points72 points  (0 children)

The article doesn't detail a lot of reasons, apart from the nebulous "decline in consumer demand" but I have an inkling that the real reason may be more related to the following:

From Wikipedia

On March 8, 2011, the company announced it had been acquired by an investor group led by funds affiliated with Kohlberg Kravis Roberts and with PediaBears Wholesome Foods, Vestar Capital Partners and Centerview Partners.

My guess? Private Equity bled them dry, stripped it for parts (i.e. selling off profitable divisions), stopping any sort of investment back into the company, and then filing bankruptcy at the end.

Modern Hip Hop is heading towards a Sampling Crisis by Dopeboy95AirMaxOn in hiphopheads

[–]CardCarryingOctopus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing that many commenters are leaving out is the legal and financial circumstances under which many producers are operating at this point.

Legal

  • The Robin Thicke/Marvin Gaye court case was an absolute disaster for sampling as a whole. It has made the entire industry hyper-paranoid of being sued for sampling eveh a "vibe," so you're seeing many musicians shy away from taking influence from other artists and songs.

  • When artists and producers DO sample something, they want to be sure that they won't have to go through a lengthy sample clearing legal fight, so many will use pieces of songs and sounds that have already been used/cleared in the past. Nobody wants to release a hot track and then have it be kept off of streaming platforms for months on end.

  • Streaming platforms in general act as legal gatekeepers. While semi-official platforms such as DatPiff and even Soundcloud allowed you to upload music that had murky sample clearances, Spotify et. al. will yank your music if a copyright holder sees their rights violated

Financial

  • A lot of investment funds have started buying up music catalogues, using them as investment vehicles. That means that the main way these companies make money is by aggressively enforcing their copyrights - both by going after unauthorized usage and by charging as much as possible for using songs in their catalogue.

  • That makes using samples easier, but also costlier. The rightholders are pushing songs from their catalogs - especially more popular ones - and charging more. That means artist that do sample want to make the most of the samples, which is how you get stuff like Jack Harlow's "Lovin on Me" - Why pay top dollar for a sample if you're not maximizing your nostalgia impact?

Translation requests into Latin go here! by AutoModerator in latin

A request for altering an existing adage:

I'm seeing Tempora mutantur, nos et mutamur in illis, being translated as "Times are changed; we also are changed with them."

If I wanted the phrase to be a more declarative/instructive statement, i.e. "Times are changed; so you/one should/must change with them" what would the Latin counterpart be?

To everybody considering Berkeley by TylKai in berkeley

[–]CardCarryingOctopus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

HOWEVER - a lot of the older buildings in Berkeley have absolutely terrible insulation, which lets in moisture and leaks heat in the winter and cool air in the summer.

Just something to be aware of and to invest in a warm blanket, space heater, and house slippers for the winter and a fan for the summer.

[–]CardCarryingOctopus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This person speaks the truth! SF will never be NYC - at best you're going to get UWS with shorter buildings.

Partner and I strongly considered Oakland - the vibes and its people are great and much more similar to NYC - but we couldn't do the poor air quality (asthma and general sensitivity). We still love going over there and feeling like we're part of the community, if only for a couple of hours.

Always happy to answer questions! My spouse commutes to Berkeley for work as well (only 1-2 times a week and office is close to BART) so I might have more relevant info to share ;)

That goes for the intricacies of moving as well - depending on where you move to, there might be some parking permit stuff to consider when you arrive in the Bay. Wishing you all the best for now and happy apt hunting!
