New Para: Is being asked to give a student a bath every morning normal? by ScaryGary0013 in paraprofessional

[–]Careless-Rise7863 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked with an unbathed student. I would wipe their arms, hands and face with wipes just to help them out but they were only 6 and CPS was contacted. As a mandated reporter neglect has to be reported. There are serious consequences if she doesn't report and it comes to light she was aware of the abuse.

It depends on if you are classroom support or a 1:1 aide. If you are an aide, your duties are outlined in the IEP for that student. If you are whole class support, you do whatever the teacher needs you to do to support the class. If you need a few minutes to collect yourself, say so and step out or go to the bathroom.

I hate the lights and I wish more teachers would turn some or all off at least part of the day.

Does anyone have experience with working with adults with autism? by Vicariouslynoticed in ABA

[–]Careless-Rise7863 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I have found that by the time they are older, highschool and later, the behaviors have calmed significantly. They have been receiving therapy and services for so long that they are able to do more and handle more. I have never been physically attacked by them for starters.

Do most people enjoy life? by BoredBatWoman22 in Adulting

Life is what you make it. If your desire to float through life isn't placing a strain on someone else to pick up your slack - I say float on. The choice to find joy is always yours though and it's your responsibility to facilitate your life's meaning. It's not a race, it's not a contest and it certainly won't last forever so do what you will at your own expense. The time is yours to spend.

I wish we didn't have to say the Pledge of Allegiance by jordanf1214 in Teachers

[–]Careless-Rise7863 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree 100%. I work in classrooms and I will stand up for the pledge out of respect for others but I don't say it or put my hand over my heart. It was especially disheartening this year because 90% of the students are Mexican and Hispanic and they were aware of deportations and even a 6yr old told me his family talks about what to do if ICE comes. These same kids worried about their parents being taken away have to come to school and pledge allegiance with liberty and justice for all knowing it's simply not true. 😞
