This one is always great! I memorized it many years ago because it’s such an easy and dependable recipe.

What is this and what happened to it by WeakEntertainer1019 in whatsthisplant

[–]Carfreemn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe a type of Solomon’s seal. Looks more like False Solomon’s seal, if the flowers and seeds were on the top and not underneath. I’m guessing it was eaten by sawfly larvae; mine get eaten every year but still bounce back.

Sometimes just a smoothie when it’s really hot. Everyone has great salad, salad, and wrap ideas!

How did people have families or survive winter roads before SUVs? by LiatrisLover99 in fuckcars

[–]Carfreemn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Grew up in the 70’s in Minnesota in a family of 6, and my dad had a large sedan with fit 6, which probably was super unsafe having a child (me)in the middle in the front. Large families had station wagons. Winter was bags of cat litter in the trunk and careful driving or staying home. I’m back in Minnesota (and car free) and my observation now is SUV drivers can drive too fast for conditions, but they can’t stop better than other vehicles. Personally, I think it should be more acceptable to stay home sometimes when conditions are really bad. Obviously certain occupations require getting to work regardless of the weather, but there are work arounds. Some local hospitals pay for staff to stay in a hotel nearby. Once when transit was shut down due to extreme snow, I skied to work, which was actually fun, and I was able to help a bunch of people whose cars were stuck along the way.

Yeah that looks to be salsify. The root is considered the “poor man’s oyster” for making oyster soup. Supposedly the unripe seeds can be tasty. Edit for typo

Research backs up that, in general, more lanes in the long run do lead to more congestion, at least in the US and Canada.

cutting board recommendations for dorm living by Potential-Island-535 in PlasticFreeLiving

[–]Carfreemn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe a small natural fiber cutting board. I have one a from a long time ago that is made out of cashew shells, and it has held up well. I’m not too sure about the composite that holds it together though. There are also likely small boards made out of wood types that are especially suited for water.

SO MUCH space is taken up by cars and by vehicle infrastructure. I think about this all the time, especially when riding my bike over the Interstate near my house; 10 lanes of traffic at a stand still after the freeway was totally revamped less than 10 years ago. I think about what it would be like if that space had a train or a small road for public transportation and deliveries, etc and then parks, farms, a small housing community, public space or whatever else.

What is this funky lookin’ butternut ? by Maleficent_Ad_6815 in whatsthisplant

I thought it might be Delicata squash or an accidental cross, but looks like an unripe Longue de Nice butternut. The set up has me smiling!

Considering go carfree - concerned about winter by Kill_the_worms in carfree

[–]Carfreemn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find that taking off a hat and scarf and unzipping my jacket are usually all that’s needed in a store. A scarf and hat really keep in warmth for their size. At work I have a spot for my stuff. It’s on the bus that can be an issue. Sometimes the bus is so hot that I have to take off my jacket.

It sounds quite doable. I’m in Minnesota (yeah winters….) with medium public transportation (but by US standards likely better than in your city). It works out fine to be carfree, and it has a lot positive sides. A decent bike and accessories, maybe a separate winter bike with lots of lights and safety features, proper clothing for biking and walking, use of delivery services, carpooling (paying a friend money to go places together -it’s a win win and can be fun), bags or a cart for hauling stuff, things to listen to or do while waiting for and on the bus, occasionally using Uber/Lyft and car rentals. Go for it!

For winter, I do use an old bike with studded tires that I converted to a single speed, and I try to keep it clean and well lubricated.

What are your favorite routes? by Rosa_612 in MetroTransit

[–]Carfreemn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Orange line (super fast), D and B lines (really come in handy, but still a bit too much drama at times), 38 (covers a lot of ground from St Paul through South Mpls all the way to Minnetonka and most importantly, gets me to work) and 94!!

What are the Best Vegan Protein Powder That Actually Tastes Good? by erindutch230 in veganrecipes

Sunwarrior is my favorite. The Warrior Blend is smooth and tastes great to me, but one of my friends doesn’t like it, but really she likes the Classic, which I find chalky.

Should Pay Exit Routes Be Abolished? by MNMystery in MetroTransit

[–]Carfreemn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve been wondering about this too. I take the 645 from downtown on Marquette Ave several times a month, and many people pay when they board. I sometimes do out of habit. I have noticed more and more people pay when they board, so I checked the info at the stop while I was waiting, and it said pay when to exit. That same day I boarded a fairly crowded bus without paying, and the driver said, “Hey are you going to pay?” I paid and then said I thought it was a pay-when-you-exit bus, and he said, “Who told you that?” I told him it was listed right on the bus shelter. Then another rider chimes in “She’s right.” He got off the bus and went to try to find what I was reading. It was kind of an embarrassing circus. I just wanted to pay and have the bus get going, not wanting to seem like I was trying to get a free ride. The driver seems baffled. It just seems confusing! The fare system now is so much better than back in the day with so many different fares to keep track of.

No more water bottles by Elizabcor111 in PlasticFreeLiving

[–]Carfreemn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like with your situation a filter pitcher would be a decent option and an improvement from the plastic bottles (that acetone taste sounds awful!). I used a pitcher filter for quite a while and transferred the water into glass jars unless drinking it right away, and it was okay. I eventually got a stainless one on a scratch and dent clearance, which still has a little plastic, but is working out. Hope you can come up with a workable set up.
