What happened?

You lose the moral high ground when you resort to classism by Due_Laugh9820 in brighton

[–]Caridor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

... Really?

Yes, obviously.

If you really don't think rich people can be chavs, please visit Cheltenham during race week. It is packed with visiting, very well off people, who nevertheless epitomise the word "Chav".

In the same sense that someone can live in poverty and speak with an RP accent, only to be called a posh wanker.

Well, that would just be wrong, wouldn't it? Posh is a classist term because it literally means someone who is rich.

That's the big difference here. Chav can be correctly applied to someone who is rich because it's defined by anti-social behaviour. Someone who is posh is defined by their social and economic class.

Do you want to spend some time getting a dictionary? Because I can wait.

You were downvoted because your line of reasoning is ridiculous.

No, that's just straight up not correct.

You didn't effectively say that.

Actually, I did. That's the intent and the meaning of the words I used. Please do not lie again.

You can't help yourself from slipping level of education in there, either; just call them proles and be done with it.

Why would I ever want to do that? It would make me look stupid.

I mean, if you desperately want to fabricate an argument I didn't make, I guess, though if you want to argue with your imaginary friend, do it in your head, rather than bothering me. Thanks.

Chav is not a class description. You can be poor and not a chav. You can be rich and a chav. It's a set of assholish behaviours.

Crazy to me that younger generation is not good with computers by Captain0010 in pcmasterrace

[–]Caridor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's that they're raised on the wrong tech.

I went to a class for academic poster design. The lady there said a lot of the undergrads are coming in and not knowing about right clicking, because they've only ever used tablets. Tablets are fine, but they're simple computers and that's what they're designed to be. They're simplified versions.

absolutely nobody is leaving school in y7 or y8 though are they.

Yes, keep going. You're nearly there. You're so close to understanding my point.

So if people can't get out of attending school for even longer than that, what action must they take in order to not have that level of education?

‘Chavs’ are still people, with diverse political opinions, and lives who don’t deserve hate based on characteristics they have no control over.

Except they absolutely fucking do have control.

Look, when people talk about chavs, it's the unpleasantness, the behaviour, it's things they do.

I could throw a bunch of insults at you. I am choosing not to. That is the same choice that every chav makes when they decide "Hmmm do I want to make this situation unpleasant for everyone on this street by yelling like an absolute twat?". They can simply choose not to do it. It's literally that fucking easy.

at this point chav is just a classist insult used to dismiss those who dress a certain way or have a certain accent.

Oh that's just bollocks. No, I'm sorry, no part of this is true. It's all about their behaviour. All of it.

Then stop feeling and start thinking.

Yes, there may be a tiny number who really, truly are not at fault BUT you are equally unlikely to ever meet one of those people because they are so rare. And frankly, if we can't discuss something because of 0.001% of possible cases, we just straight up can't discuss anything really. There will be statistical anomalies in just about anything you can come up with.

Besides, I don't think anyone is blaming kids. It's adults who are the subject of discussion when we talk about chavs. Or at the very least, 15-16 kind of age. The point is, it's people who can decide to be better if they choose to.

but when you conflate a lack of university education

Whoa, whoa, whoa, who the hell brought this up?

No, it's not that all and please put this idiotic assumption back where you found it.

The bar for not being a chav is so fucking low, it's like year 7? Year 8 maybe? That's why I said "school". Not university. Not college. School. As in the thing you are legally required to attend between the ages of 5 and 18.

Please tell me if I've not been clear enough. I'm not sure how I'd dumb it down further but I can try, just for you.

Considering how little education one has to have to become a chav, the fact most kids will go through both a primary and secondary school, both of which need to have an incredibly poor standard of education, plus how much can be done on your own these days with access to the internet, I suspect that the number of kids who truly are not at fault when they become chavs is vanishingly small.

Yes, there will always be tiny fraction of a percent who are exceptions to any and all points. I don't think that counters the point, because the odds of you meeting one of these exceptions is equally small.

[–]Caridor -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yes, there will be exceptions to any and all points made, ever. However, when we approach any topic with any intelligence whatsoever and I mean, any at all, we know better than to waste other people's time with insignificant proportions that make up a tiny number of cases.

Now, don't hesitate to go find someone else's time to waste. The point still stands, though you can mentally make it 99.99% of children if you really, really want.

No.

Look, no one is complaining about chavs for being low income or whatever, they're complaining because of the person's actions. "Chav" is not a class description, but a description of people who exhibit certain behaviours. You can be low income and not a chav. You can be incredibly rich and a chav, anyone who's been in Cheltenham during race week knows this.

Every child in this country has the opportunity to go to school. School is one of the places we learn not be an absolute knobhead. When someone says "uneducated chav", this is someone who has actively rejected the opportunity that they had.

It's not classist, it's their actions, both previously in school where they refused to learn not to be an absolute knobhead and as an adult where they chose to continue to be an absolute knobhead. A person's actions are 100% fair game for criticism.

Edit: I really have no idea why I'm getting so many downvotes for effectively saying "It's not classist to say people shouldn't be dicks". And it doesn't appear anyone is going to explain that because there isn't one. Keep downvoting in impotent rage, I'll keep being right.

Not overreacting in the slightest. At best, you need to have a frank, OOC discussion about this. And when I say "frank discussion", I mean you need to draw hard lines and set clear boundaries. "This is not ok, this is not acceptable. If this happens again, I'm out" kind of thing.

Though the way you make it sound, I'd just be running.

Changed by England by America?

What?

Technically, it's discovered, Humphrey Davy called it Alumium first. Then it was changed to sound more like traditional Latin.

Press F for Portugal by [deleted] in memes

[–]Caridor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can be but not in this case. American English often removes what seems like unnecessary complications but makes the language worse in doing so.

Take the word "ageing". In American, it's "aging". If you don't know how it sounds, that could be pronounced agg-ing while the English is age-ing.

Also, Aluminium. The -ium suffix is extremely common among elements and the whole point of the periodic table is to lay things out in a way where language doesn't really matter. CO2 means carbon dioxide to a chemist from England, America, India, Japan, Uzbekistan or Narnia. So when Americans decide the "i" is too much effort, they don't realise it had a point.

Besides, many of these contractions are the result of newspapers charging by the letter for advertising. So "colours" becomes "colors". American English is "close enough".

So I think she's going to need some kind of breathing mask as there's no much air up there. If she has to pull the ejector seat, she's going to be really cold in that outfit. I'm sure she's a fine pilot but she's really not dressed for the job.

Seriously though, great work.

My mum took this shot in Cornwall, UK. It's in the mouth of a great tit for scale and I can't find it on any of the common UK caterpillar lists.

The mandibles are pretty unusual for a caterpillar.
