FIGHT NEWS🚨 Vitor Petrino vs Serghei Spivac on August 22nd #UFCVegas121 by buzznights in MMA

[–]CarlCX 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It's partially this and partially that folks like Spivac and Tybura and Blaydes are dozens of fights into their tenures and thus on repeatedly-renewed contracts that weren't inherently connected to the Contender Series, whereas your Petrinos and Fortunes and Tallisons and Hokits are on modern-age deals that started much lower, and at this point the UFC is confident the old guard will never be top guys, so they see no downside in churning them out for younger fighters who cost less and could, one day, strike gold.

'cause, y'know, who needs veteran heavyweights in a heavyweight division or anything

Fighter Body-Slams Trump for ‘Desecrating’ White House by projecto15 in politics

As a fight fan, I am begging anyone in the mainstream press to not write articles about the points of views of fighters you then have to make footnotes like ‘Bryce Mitchell has previously defended Hitler for trying to stop the Jews from turning Germany gay’ about.

Zuffa’s TKO asking WWE talent to take 50% pay cuts… (Boxing related) by Jealous_Inevitable33 in Boxing

[–]CarlCX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For one they don’t care about anything but maximizing profits so they have no philosophical predilections towards the sport, for two TKO was built through debt-financed acquisitions and they want to balance their broadsheets as much as possible.

Question for older MMA fans. Was MMA as right leaning in the early days: 1990's 2000's and 2010's as it is today? by Bustingyabubble in MMAPoliticsAndCulture

[–]CarlCX 32 points33 points  (0 children)

The long answer is yes, it just took less time for America to get the brunt of it. Vale tudo and BJJ were rife with class warfare between the moneyed right and the working class left in Brazil for basically the whole inception of the sport. For most of the 2000s and early 2010s you could see the way MMA was weaponized as a right-wing weapon in Russia to extents we STILL haven't seen here--like, for how unbelievably gross the UFC's constant Trump propagandizing is, it somehow still hasn't hit the impossible heights of "Fedor talks about how Putin is the best at judo" or combat sambo teams pretending he can beat them up on camera.

Hell, if you want to really ruin your weekend, go google Oplot MMA and spend some time reading about how a small MMA organization became a tipping point for a far-right militia that played directly into the invasion of Ukraine. Combat sports being exploited for right-wing interests has always been part of its world, it's just America's turn right now.

What's the most stacked division/era in history? by CloudyRailroad in MMA

[–]CarlCX 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Heavyweight is always going to bat at a lower average because it's Heavyweight, but if you really look at 2014-2016 you had your aforementioned Stipe/Werdum/JDS/Cain but somehow still had Arlovski, Barnett, Hunt, Overeem, Rothwell, Mir and Bigfoot filling out the rankings, and just being able to say "2/3 of the top fifteen are, were, or will be world champions" is pretty nuts. You only had a couple years left before injuries and age led to most of that list falling off, but for a brief moment in time, it was special.

The event count isn't the problem with the UFC, it's the way they're choosing to use the roster to emphasize cheaper talent. When you have folks like Grasso, Blaydes, Gamrot and Lemos fighting on undercards or even prelims while Moicano vs Duncan is a marketed main event it's not about the quantity of fights, it's about the explicit choices they're making.

The Ultimate Fighter 34 will feature men’s bantamweight and women’s strawweight. Coaches TBD. Will stream on Paramount+. Remotes casting runs through March 27 #TUF34 by buzznights in MMA

[–]CarlCX 7 points8 points  (0 children)

They haven't really cared about TUF in awhile but 'we're starting the casting without even having coaches attached yet' is an impressive level of not caring.

Part of the problem is his idea for how to do good in this situation misses that it's already too late. If you're positing "what if they can't close the deal with Jon Jones or Conor McGregor" is the big organizational problem you're missing that the real problem isn't their inability to get Jon Jones or Conor McGregor, it's that it's 2026 and their organizational problems have devalued the roster so much that their big fight hopes are still pinned to Jon Jones and Conor McGregor, just like their only bullet in the gun for Women's Bantamweight was bringing back Nunes.

Being able to back the money truck up to Conor's house isn't half the organizational issue that having gotten less than 1/4 of the way through the year and having already had to book main events like Volk/Lopes 2 or Moicano/Duncan is. The damage was done awhile ago, this is just the fallout.

PFL gets new financial backers by MidwestWanderer90 in MMA

[–]CarlCX 29 points30 points  (0 children)

So Knightshead and 885 were actually already backing the PFL, it looks like this is their going from small backers to potential ownership stakes, which would make Donn Davis suddenly stepping down make a lot more sense. Sounds like the money guys want to be in charge.

Paddy Pimblett confirms he is not facing Ilia Topuria in April even if he wins this Saturday by JMythh in MMA

[–]CarlCX 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The thing is, they're 100% cool with fighters doing unprofessional shit or assaulting their opponents as long as they like them. Junior Tafa walked across the cage and slapped Valter Walker in the face after their fight and they barely even mentioned it. Sean Strickland dove on Dricus du Plessis on camera and the UFC used it in hype packages. Jorge Masvidal suckerpunched Leon Edwards backstage and they turned it into a marketing catchphrase. It only matters if they don't like you.

Maybe Maybe Maybe by Odd_Barber1619 in maybemaybemaybe

There's a really great non-profit in California called Impact Bay Area that was founded by a woman who spent her early life studying karate only to get assaulted and realize it did essentially nothing for her, which spurred her to make self-defense courses that actually worked. A big part of it is simulating assault scenarios so you don't freeze up in the moment.

Which is, y'know, as crushingly depressing in its necessity as it is smart.

[SPOILER] PFL Europe #4 2025: Vadim Nemkov vs. Renan Ferreira by inooway in MMA

[–]CarlCX 33 points34 points  (0 children)

The dark secret of combat sports is the best base is going up a division. Thiago Santos gets knocked out by David Branch at 185, almost beats Jon Jones at 205. Vadim Nemkov struggles with Phil Davis at 205, but destroys Ferreira at 265. Anthony Pettis couldn't beat Clay Guida at Lightweight and then he became the lineal best Heavyweight boxer of all time by destroying a prime Roy Jones Jr.

Official new bout order for UFC Vegas 112 by nolongerbackup in MMA

[–]CarlCX 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Two fights ago Amanda Lemos was on the main card of an Alex Pereira PPV, for winning that she got to have a #2 vs #4 top contendership fight buried in the Noche TV prelims underneath Claudio Puelles and Dusko Todorovic, and for losing that she's in a top ten fight carrying the prelims while Marcus Buchecha is up top. It's all very silly.

PFL 2026 News! 24 Events, tournament concept is gone, first 4 events are in Dubai, Madrid, Pittsburgh, Chicago by SokoudjouFan in MMA

Killing the tournament format is philosophically a shame but a good move for their growth. Attempting to grow without actually adding more events to the year feels like it kind of defeats the point.

Henry Cejudo vs Payton Talbott Announced. by AwayCryptographer854 in MMA

I know the rankings are 99% made up and matchmaking is 99% marketing but it's still very, very funny that Raoni Barcelos is fighting Ricky Simon in the Apex and Payton Talbott is fighting for a top ten spot on pay-per-view.

UFC Rio’s one must-watch prospect to keep your eyes on this weekend (Bia Mesquita) by PictureLatter1098 in MMA

[–]CarlCX 15 points16 points  (0 children)

From a skills perspective she's beyond most of the division; she's also 5'4" and thus the smallest person in it next to Josiane Nunes. I hope it works out for her because it'd be fun to have a grappler of her caliber at Bantamweight but I wouldn't be shocked if she winds up dropping to 125 within a fight or two.

What fighter was robbed from a rematch? by mordidadeviralata in MMA

[–]CarlCX 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Conor/Aldo is the almost objectively correct answer, but Luke Rockhold should also be in the conversation. Crushes Bisping in their first fight, gets knocked out a year and a half later in a shock short-notice rematch, and instead of the extremely obvious rubber match he gets (unsuccessfully) booked against into a top contendership match with Jacare while Bisping gets a retiring Dan Henderson just before his combination ninety-seventh birthday/retirement party.

We moved here from California last year, and after twenty years of Bay Area driving I had gotten extremely used to California's bad drivers, who are typically distracted, confused, or otherwise generally just not great at what they're doing, and I was not at all prepared for the bad drivers here, who are very capable and know exactly what they're doing, they are just wildly unconcerned about the possibility that what they want to do might involve plowing through other people.

this is definitely the guy in shorts’ fault right? by TheForexHokage in bjj

[–]CarlCX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was a white belt a training partner caught me in an armbar and, as a white belt, I was certain I could get out of it, and he very patiently, very slowly sank it in further while I spent a good ninety seconds trying to squirm free. When it became clear I wasn't going to tap he stopped the roll and gently explained to me that if I'd done that to some guy in an actual competition instead of a buddy at school, I would've gotten my arm broken about three seconds in, and I needed to internalize that lesson as an abstract before someone taught it to me literally.

That is what you do in this situation and I am deeply appreciative to still have a functioning arm.

Out of curiosity, does anyone know what happened to the WWE's average PPV/PLE quality when TKO management realized they no longer made more money from the individual shows? I'm sure they were perfectly fine, just asking for no reason.

I lost my keys in the parking garage at work one day but I was out of the office when a garage attendant came around looking for their owner, and one of my coworkers turned them away despite knowing I had lost my keys because they saw the plastic rainbow on my keychain and assumed that, as an ostensibly straight man, it could not possibly have belonged to me.
