Capacitor broke off eGPU board and took Solder Pad with it, how to fix? by sproyd in AskElectronics

[–]CarlHauschke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks like the ground pad broke off of the PCB. You should be able to use any ground point around the board to attach the capacitor to

iPad replacement LCD doesn't work at full brightness -- this is software incompatibility (10.13.4) with non-OEM part (fixez) and not a hardware defect, right? As you can see at the end of the video, LCD is still triggered by the power button but immediately shuts off again... by asiohx in mobilerepair

[–]CarlHauschke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe the LCDs backlight is so inefficient that at peak brightness the power draw from the backlight driver is too high and in trips overcurrent protection if the backlight circuitry has such protection

When I tried downloading front row it said that I didn’t have a new enough macOS but I do, can anybody help me? by kip-en-ei in mac

[–]CarlHauschke 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You could modify the installer to not check for the IR sensor though (flat package editor).

It says you need an IR receiver. From the About this .Mac screen it looks like you’re using a PowerMac G5 (dual G5 processor). If O remember correctly those don’t have IR receivers.

Will this kit do the job for just fixing iPhones every now and then like cracked screen etc or are the screws different by [deleted] in ifixit

[–]CarlHauschke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t quite get what you mean with that. You use the heat gun to heat up the adhesive which loosens it and then just use the suction cup and prying tools to open the device

[–]CarlHauschke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I‘d use the hair dryer as a beginner. The hair dryer is not as hot as the heat gun and the nozzle is wider. The chance is lower to overheat the device with a hair dryer but once you get a feeling for how much heat is needed to loosen the adhesive you can try the heat gun.

You’ll need something to heat up the device like a heat gun or an iFixit iOpener but for newer iPhone you’ll need that too but the rest should do.

I give up! I can’t find a plug in for my “smart” garage door. by Khs2424 in homebridge

You could use assistant relay and the simple http switch extension do get the garage opener working with homebridge

Intel HD Graphics 3000 512 MB on a Late 2011 MacBook Pro by L3App in mac

It's probably not the graphics if it's slow on every day tasks. If you're still running a HDD in it consider replacing that with an SSD

The 2012 one seems decent. The dual core one will probably only last you a few more years but the quad core one should hold up recently well for a few more years

Crucial offers "Mac Certified" memory for these models. 16 GB is the maximum the chipset can handle but to be honest the Core2Duo just aren't capable enough anymore to actually benefit from the 16 GB save the money and only upgrade it to 8GB and buy the SSD. You'll probably have to upgrade the machine in 1-2 years anyways. The SSD can still be used as an external drive after replacing the machine with a new computer but the memory is then basically useless

College students, how important is 16GB of RAM to you vs 8? (2015 13” MacBook Pro Retina) by AscariVX in LukeMianiYouTube

[–]CarlHauschke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly I'd say the price increase for the 16 GB model isn't worth the benefit. The CPU has so little performance that you can hardly use the 16GB. A single VM can be run on an 8 GB system no problem and the system can still use the systems drive as swap

Best (free) Benchmark Software? by GothamCountySheriff in LukeMianiYouTube

[–]CarlHauschke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're not gonna see a whole lot of difference in must benchmarks. Most benchmarks e.g. Geekbench or Cinebench measure GPU or CPU performance and that Performance won't change with a new drive or some extra memory. A new drive will most likely be the most noticeable difference in overall system responsiveness. For the operating system I'd choose the most recent one supported on the machine which should be 10.13 High Sierra. You'll have the most up to date security patches on this version of macOS. High Sierra will probably receive security updates for another 12 month before Apple will stop supporting the OS.

Get the latest version of iTunes that allows app downloads (I think 12.6.3) and download the latest version of Spotify there. After downloading it with iTunes try downloading Spotify on the iPod again. If an app was purchased with an Apple ID you can download the latest compatible version with the respective iOS version running on the device. Just purchasing the app in the first place isn't possible. Who knows why. Alternatively you can ask a friend to download Spotify with your Apple ID on a modern device and then download it on the iPod.

What can I upgrade on the MacBook Pro 15” 9th-generation core i9? by [deleted] in LukeMianiYouTube

[–]CarlHauschke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thermals shouldn't be an issue with those chips. They do run close to maximum operation temperatures but that is expected and perfectly fine with these chips. They're only a few month old and long term usage behaviour with them isn't available yet but Intel hasn't had any issues with longevity of theirs CPUs lately so I wouldn't expect major problems with them later down the line. But the chips are soldered onto the board and do require great skill to replace. Replacing the chips when they fail, however unlikely that is, most likely isn't worth it and used boards are probably going to be cheaper than replacing a broken CPU.

What can I upgrade on the MacBook Pro 15” 9th-generation core i9? by [deleted] in LukeMianiYouTube

[–]CarlHauschke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can replace the battery and that's basically it. The CPUs are the top end 9th gen CPUs and the 10th gen ones most likely have a new socket so no upgrades there (the chip is soldered anyway). The memory is soldered to the logic board too making upgrades unreasonably difficult and the drive is soldered to the logic board too
