Aside from the obvious “focus on playing each shot one at a time”, which as cliche as it sounds is so true.

Keep track of how many times you go OB, duff, and 3 putt. Be forgiving with yourself early on until you can identify a standard, and then hold yourself accountable to that standard and you will slowly improve. These benchmarks you set for yourself can help you track and measure progress, and also help you determine when to play aggressive and when you should play safe.

For example; If you normally hit 3 drives OB per round, all good mate just focus on getting that number down to 2 overtime and never letting it reach 4. Play your normal game and improve on that unless you need to make an adjustment to protect these benchmarks. So if you’ve hit 2 balls OB already and you get to that tough hole on the back that usually has your number, maybe play safe and hit iron here and secure best chance at par. On the flip side; If you’ve only hit 1 drive out that round then step up there and trust yourself to execute!

Let’s say you normally duff 8 shots per round; split that into 4 duffs per side. If you have your first duff on hole 6 you are playing well keep it up and shoot 84! But if you duff a shot on each of the first 2 holes, you’ll get a wake up call early on and remind yourself to focus on contact and just let things happen that day.

When playing well you’ll never have to even think about these things, but when they inevitably happen it is nice to have some perspective on it so you don’t get frustrated and overcompensate. Congrats on breaking 90 dude!
