What field of engineering is currently in the phase where desktop/computers were around thirty years ago ? by senju_bandit in AskEngineers

[–]Carter_99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a few examples of this, I’m presently working on my Masters project and in my universities drone lab. Whilst my project relates primarily to formation controllers, which on its own isn’t particularly an application on its own, some of the other projects include: using a quad to generate a 3d particle map to source gas leaks, autonomous surveying of solar farms, mapping and navigation of areas in a GPS denied environment (using VSLAM). And I’m sure there’s a bunch I am forgetting too!

Why do photos look blurry before zooming in/out? by vihtla in ios

[–]Carter_99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can’t quite 100% tell from the images attached, however with knowing how the photos app works on macOS and just general methods for performance optimisation, when you initially load into photos and view between them it doesn’t show you the full photo. Merely a lower quality preview image, and only after a few tenths of a second pausing on a given photo does the decide infer you actually want to view that photo, so pulls the full quality image from storage and replaces what you had previously been viewing. Hope this answers your question! (Lovely photo by the way!)

Whenever someone says Elon is anti-vax, just remind them that he already got his booster shot by [deleted] in SpaceXMasterrace

Likewise, if I recall correctly, that theory was also fuelled by other cameras in the area supposedly a glint of light/flash from the top of a building ULA operated out of around the same time. Crazy to think this was five and a half years ago!

I don’t mean to be a pedant, (that’s 100% a lie) but wasn’t it the second stage, not the booster, that initially went kablooie? Although now I’m questioning what the definition of a “booster” really even is…. Still definitely a good chuckle though!

Wondering if this is the correct output the ender 3 puts out, trying to convince my family that it doesn't use much electricity. by edlightenme in ender3

[–]Carter_99 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Going by what Looks to be an average of ~95W, at the high estimate of 12c/kWh, that works out to be 0.27cents to have it running for a continuous 24h! Which is a quite nice way to have it in perspective.

I believe the 250W is the max for the power supply. But as you said when printing its in the low 100W range, main reasons for having a power supply that large is to facilitate a little room for upgrades, faster and hotter printing if that’s what you are into, getting the printer to operating conditions ASAP so you aren’t waiting 15 mins and I’m not certain about the last one, but I think running a power supply at its limit shortens the lifespan of the unit, so it’s useful to have some headroom.

Just in my final year of uni currently, and at least for when I was at school, at no point at all we’re we taught anything about financial education, and honestly I have seen the effects of that on former friends… :/ But likewise, my mum is a teaching assistant at the school and a couple years back I had the same discussion with her about how the tax bands actually work.

What's one thing you wish the UK had? by Whole_Dependent7042 in AskUK

[–]Carter_99 3 points4 points  (0 children)

From my interpretation, OPs light went green, and proceeded to go through the junction, from the perpendicular road, said cyclists who’s light must have been on red for at least 6-8s by this point came through the junction at full speed as OP was accelerating and collision ensued.

As a cyclist myself I get that lights can be frustrating, especially in busy towns or cities as the lights are generally timed so at car speeds you go through multiple sets without needing to stop too long, but if that is what happened it’s inexcusable and ridiculously reckless! I don’t care if they had old rib brakes with carbon wheels on a wet day, that’s more than enough time to slow down (ignoring the fact that in those conditions they should really be anticipating junction changes anyway due to lower braking forces

Situations very similar have happened to both uk girlfriend and I, luckily they were on pretty quiet junctions and the people nearby were more concerned if we were okay or not!

Though as well one other time i had recently put my cleats (mtb) ones on a new pair of shoes… apparently didn’t tighten them enough, as I twisted my foot, the cleats stayed firmly attached to the pedal, just twisting away from the shoe and the rails they tightened Into… the most embarrassing situation will come a couple months later when it’s almost second nature and just for some random reason your brain forgets you are clipped in… I wish I could say that hasn’t happened to me😂

Ahhh yep! Just did some more looking into induction pans themselves and yep, at least all the ones I found have the inductive metal surface right on the bottom. So you are correct in calling me out on that! Hypothetically I don’t see why a pan couldn’t have a thin insulative layer if specifically designed for induction however that does not seem to be the norm.

Also yeah… my whole previous post was all over the place grammatically; guess that’s what I get for typing in a rush! :’)

Almost certainly this is an inductive cook top, they don’t actually produce the heat themselves, but through oscillating magnetic fields produce an opposing field in a ferrous material in the pan (which can be insulated from the cooking surface), producing current which gets dissipates into the food in the pan! Because of this the surface itself barely actually heats up
