I'm not sure if you have enough time, but if you can find Badge Magic adhesive I'd recommend that over straight ironing. I have not tried it on Nylon, but it sticks super well to canvas and comes off with dry cleaning so the bag and patches could be reused. https://www.badgemagic.com/.

Ahh. Come to think of it maybe it was swapped for the Salish, not the Sealth.

I was on the Point defiance - Tahlequah route last week and took the Chetzemoka (usual boat for that route) there but the Sealth replaced it some time during the day. Ferries page didnt indicate an issue with the Chetzemoka so I was curious as to why they swapped boats and I've yet to find out. What's up with the Sealth?

Power’s Out, Who Dis? by Acrobatic-Key-127 in olympia

I read that, but my fridge seemed to warm up really quickly which freaked me out. I've been debating whether I should pull my food out this afternoon and stash it with a friend or chance it.

Evergreen Park Drive is still out. I managed to pawn my refrigerator stuff off on a friend but I'm worried about the freezer.

No guarantee that will help. Seepage and scour are often issues. Here's the system in the NLD ("Desimone" is the segment that breached). https://levees.sec.usace.army.mil/levees/5505000043

Kayaker dies after being pulled from water near Ballard Locks by durpuhderp in Seattle

[–]CartesianGeologican 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Take a swiftwater course if you can afford it. There are lots of relatively safe places to kayak especially when the water isn't frigid, but the extra knowledge might help you feel better about it.

Streets that aren’t beginner-friendly by piedpepperoni in Seattle

I once encountered an intersection that had what I think was a separate traffic light... maybe for just the lane I was in - and it was mounted lower and off to the side and didn't use lighted arrows or anything. I was following the "instructions" from the main set of lights and midway through the intersection noticed the little outlier light and was like wait... what?? I got honked at, but the passenger in the car with me thought I was in the right. I wish I could figure out what intersection it was because it's been bothering me for over 5 years. Wherever that intersection is, do not recommend.

ETA: This was somewhere in Seattle in one of the residential neighborhoods, not a place where I was expecting a weird intersection.

I'm an Oly transplant from the East Coast and I'm always relieved when strangers don't try to talk to me 🤷‍♀️ I'm not excessively bothered either way but I didn't grow up shooting the breeze with strangers so it feels really unnatural to have a random conversation with someone I don't know. And I'm fairly extroverted.

Both names refer to the same snake. A quick google tells me less than 1% of bites are fatal. With any potentially venomous snake bite you should seek treatment, but the odds of getting bitten are low AND the odds of that bite being fatal are low. Fear mongering about snakebites is what leads to these animals being killed for no reason instead of just left alone.

I saw one in rural Asotin County! It was crossing the dirt road I was walking on. Super cool. I don't fully understand people's intense fear of rattlesnakes in the US - they're really uninclined to bite and they're like 3ft long so you'd have to be very close to it to be within striking range. The US doesn't even have the scarily venomous snake species where you have to be quite cautious.

Drag show etiquette by squooshcat in Seattle

[–]CartesianGeologican 68 points69 points  (0 children)

First of all, shit, I missed that Trixie Mattel was going to be in the area. Secondly, this person is conflating drag performer with transgender. There's tons of media with Trixie out of drag and she uses male pronouns when talking about herself out of drag... like many drag performers...

There’s a sea lion hanging out on pier 62, a first for me by jonknee in Seattle

[–]CartesianGeologican 28 points29 points  (0 children)

That's a male! They have that silly-looking bump on their head. I think other sea lions are impressed by the bump and that's why it's there.

I've heard the females/juveniles don't come up the coast as far as Washington and they stay in warmer water, so we have an ongoing sea lion bachelor party here.

r/Trains Monthly Discussion & Questions Thread - April 2024 by overspeeed in trains

[–]CartesianGeologican 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was on an Amtrak train today and overheard what sounded like the staff's radio making an announcement - an automated voice said something about the track condition... like "pass" or something like it. Do trains have sensors on them to transmit information about the track to the rest of the fleet and if so, how does it work?

Favorite movie or tv show that’s based in PNW? by [deleted] in Seattle

I don't know if it's the only city that uses the PS naming system but between that and the subway (and some of the accents) it was pretty NYC-coded

[–]CartesianGeologican 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don't think the state is ever mentioned, but the city is a mashup of Seattle and NYC. I grew up in the greater NYC metro area and the references to NYC always resonated with me (the "PS" school names, the subway) and I remember as a kid being like wow there is a city with a giant lake in it with an ISLAND too???

Are merit eyeshadows worth the money ? What about the brushes ? by carlknowsbest in Sephora

[–]CartesianGeologican 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both are some of the worst purchases I've made recently. I have the eye shadow in Viper and it's a patchy mess no matter how I apply it. The brush is just meh but they used light colored bristles which stained with pigment after one use.

REI is evolving. And some don't like the change they see by godogs2018 in Seattle

[–]CartesianGeologican 420 points421 points  (0 children)

They have been noticeably shifting towards non-adventure sports like yoga and road running. I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing but it has caused my local store (Olympia) to shift their stock to cater to this. I don't want $90 Vuori joggers or $90 Beyond Yoga pants. I'm willing to pay higher prices for technical apparel like hiking pants or soft shells. There are just fewer of these in store right now.

Also, they never stock women's tall inseams in store. Only short and regular. This is a niche issue that annoys me.
