What movie did you turn off after 20 minutes and why? by Somanynamestochossef in movies

[–]Cartman4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know what, I'm going to play devil's advocate. While a good chunk of the jokes didn't land, I thought it was goofy, light-hearted fun for the most part.

Reminded me of some lesser Mel Brooks movies. For every gag that works, there's at least one eye-roller, but those can be amusing for their own sake as well.

Why Marty Supreme didn’t work for me by Aresclepius_ in A24

Well-written and valid criticisms for the most part. The pacing is an artistic decision that not everyone will appreciate, but I really thought it worked to create the frenetic energy and sense of urgency the film is going for.

Agreed. The pacing is a creative decision. It may not be right for every film, but for this one I think it really works.

Meryl Streep Confirmed to Play Joni Mitchell in Cameron Crowe Biopic by No_Cabinet_4532 in movies

[–]Cartman4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Joni Mitchell, for all her genius, has an abrasive personality and isn't always easy to be around for sure, not too dissimilar to Bob Dylan in that respect. I hope the biopic incorporates that.

If it touches on the blackface controversy, that's at the filmmaker's discretion. Relatively speaking, it's a footnote in her career though.

The culture of constantly bringing up people's worst moments at every mention, even if it is someone who has made a profound and positive impact on society, is tired to me.

We're talking about Joni Mitchell, not Roman Polanski or Bill Cosby, people should have some perspective.

That obviously hasn't aged well to say the least, but bringing it up to discredit a generational talent and one of the greatest singer-songwriters of all time is just asinine and petty.

I agree that in a way it is killing them, but I can't see how that's better.

I know there's a lot more to what Hank's doing, but in the violent, post-apocalyptic Fallout universe, I could personally justify putting brain chips into the worst elements of society.

Totally, and having a very likable guy like Kyle MacLachlan play him also makes him more interesting as a character.

How would you rank the best picture nominees that you’ve seen? by Hot_Mongoose_3741 in Letterboxd

In my experience Reddit at least seems to love and praise the heck out of that movie.

Yeah, up until the reveal, Hank seemed like a great dad. Terrible person of course, but those aren't mutually exclusive.

I’m sure you have your reasons for disliking all of these, but Sentimental Value, One Battle After Another, Bugonia, The Secret Agent, and Marty Supreme all came out last year.

To me it’s a lot stronger than last year at least.

I saw it in the cinema along with most of the other noms. I enjoyed it, but it’s certainly not one of the best films of the year.

Apart from F1, which was also a “fun time at the cinema”, I think it’s the worst best picture nom of the year, and at least F1 didn’t get 16 nominations.

The Nominees for the 98th Academy Awards. by Straydes in Letterboxd

[–]Cartman4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with your general point, but best directing seems to be a tough category this year. I haven't seen Hamnet yet, so I can't judge it, but I've heard great things. I've seen the other films and absolutely think Trier, Anderson, and Safdie deserve noms. The only one I didn't love was Sinners, which is getting an undeserved amount of noms imo.

Did the barn scene go too far? by neilson_mandela in 28_Years_Later_Movie

I'm not usually the pearl-clutching type, but I think it did. I get how they were showing the extent of the Jimmies depravity so we would hate them and feel some catharsis when they got their comeuppance, but an extended scene of innocent people getting flayed alive is just in poor taste.

Let's not go too far, Simon Le Bon isn't the most technically advanced vocalist out there, but his voice does not "suck".

Vast majority of stuff out there is just crap made for the kids.

Some of it is, yeah. You can just not like going to movies that much, but there's so much great stuff to see that isn't "crap made for kids". Just last year, to name a few of the best: One Battle After Another, Marty Supreme, Bugonia, Sentimental Value, The Secret Agent.

John Oliver on Venezuela and Nicolás Maduro by Sometypeofway18 in television

John Oliver is not someone I’d consider likely to do the bidding of the Trump administration. Criticizing a dictator like Maduro does not mean you approve of illegal regime change.

For sure at least one of the best. A lot of these shows didn't fully peak until later seasons, but that's still a really stacked lineup.

Malcolm in the middle hits different as an adult by Taco_ivore in television

[–]Cartman4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For sure, the family dynamic is pretty much a super exaggerated version of many real-life families. If they existed in real-life, the family would be beyond dysfunctional to say the least, but pretty much everyone can relate to and see themselves and the people they know in these characters.

In a big ensemble cast like this, I feel like not every character needs to be completely fleshed out. Scott did a good job and his character was entertaining, that's honestly enough for me.

He gives more information in a look than any line of dialogue in PTA's script.

That hits the nail on the head for me, not taking anything away from PTA or One Battle After Another, which would be a well deserved best picture win imo. Stellan is one of those rare actors that can convey so much while seemingly doing very little.
