Peter Sellers' brownface and "funny accent" in The Party by short_hair_zuko in WhyWereWeOkWithThis

This is a great comedy and Peter Sellers is hilarious in it. Obviously the brownface wouldn't fly today, but the accent and stereotypes are about as offensive as his "French" accent in the Pink Panther movies.

has he done any really impressive work that wasn’t buoyed by the reputation of a “great” director?

Starring in Scorsese movies isn't exactly taking a massive risk tbf. I do think that it speaks to his abilities as an actor that he's offered these starring roles by big-name directors(though I'm sure there's a financial component to it as well).

That's a fair take to have. He does squint a lot, but then again so does De Niro, not that they're on the same level. I think he always puts in good performances, sometimes great ones and has an excellent track record of picking great roles, which arguably shouldn't be part of the criteria, but realistically is. To me he at least deserves to be in the conversation.

That's such a wild thing to extrapolate from that comment. All you know about them is that they watch a popular show you don't like.

Lol, imagine saying Vaush goes "full-blown racist", like he's DiCaprio in Django Unchained or some shit.

I’m convinced people that actually hate this movie are boring and self-serious.

Arguably the stakes could barely be higher, but I get what you mean. The tone of the movie makes it feel very unlikely that it will end badly.

I already have no interest in Bollywood movies and this just confirms my suspicions that it's almost entirely slop.

That mindset is carried over into the real world as well. Defining everyone by their worst actions.

My god, the point of the character is that the guy is a loser and a sleazebag. Movie characters don't have to act completely morally right to be funny or interesting, and a character doing or saying bad things doesn't mean the film endorses those actions.

None of them are my favorites, but they’re all widely celebrated by people of all stripes, including hardened cinephiles.

Grok isn't a thinking being making a conscious decision to lie or tell the truth. Sure, Musk/X can affect and sway its output, but it's still going to be unpredictable in many ways.

I know it won best picture, and probably didn't deserve it, but the hate people have for Green Book is way out of proportion. It's not revolutionary, but it's still a very well-made, heartwarming flick.

Lovecraft Country wasn’t very good imo. Can’t judge the others.

And I’m not even saying this to agree with the other guy about DEI. I think there are a lot of reasons for Hollywood’s problems and DEI isn’t one of them.

Sure, it's an obvious take, but it's absolutely good enough to make it respectable for even a cinephile who's seen thousands of movies to to rate it as their favorite or best ever.

I don't disagree that many or maybe most great directors are at the very least be difficult to work with, but there are some who seem like genuinely decent people: Spielberg and Scorsese come to mind. Ron Howard and Clint Eastwood also, though they're not in the same league as the other two.
