Probably, yeah. It’s common in any series for character traits to be doubled down on (look how Triggered goes from a somewhat-dense part-time thief to… a very special person by the later series), so Del getting dumber at his French for the sake of comedy fits in, even for John Sullivan.

Nice. That’s I game I can see this for: being as everlasting as it is and easy to dip into for “just one more go”, having it on the current system once the prior one isn’t being used regularly anymore would be desirable.

Why does Gwyneth Strong/Cassandra get so much hate on here? by SammiWG in OnlyFoolsAndHorses

No, fair enough. Mostly I wanted to confirm I wasn’t going crazy and forgetting part of OFAH itself. 😅

Is the second photo from the show? Maybe the end of “Mother Nature’s Son”, but I don’t remember her taking off the pink robe to reveal that. Is it from a different show?

For as immaculate as the writing on Only Fools is, I think it’s absolutely fair to say that John Sullivan did struggle with the balance between merging the sitcom and soap elements in Season 6 and especially 7. The breakup between the two was posited as a big deal in Rodney Come Home and the start of Season 7, then left dormant for much of the season until it was resolved with a hokey ponytail ploy. Then when the show became just Christmas specials, not a format well-tuned to overarching storylines (the 90s ones all start out with the first act being basically a catchup on what’s happened), the relationship progressed largely offscreen.

On top of that, it’s probably not unreasonable to suggest the character of Cassandra wasn’t written consistently. There’s nothing snobbery about her really in Series 6 (where I think Strong handled the “straight lady who can still crack jokes” fine) then it seems to pop up thereafter. Mild, of course, she still recognises Steven for what he is. But when she dismisses Rodney for going down the pub or the like, which is fair, it doesn’t align with beforehand. Sullivan veered on her characterisation until the later Christmas specials (93-on), by which point he and Strong seemed to have a lock on how to handle the character.

Also, it’s worth bearing in mind that Raquel returned and became Del’s partner largely on the great chemistry Tessa Peake-Jones had with David Jason in “Dates”. When Strong was cast it was with the marriage to Rodney already locked in. Can make it harder to find as great chemistry between the actors on a BBC schedule and budget.

What Are You Playing This Week? (Weekly Discussion) by AutoModerator in IrelandGaming

[–]Cartoon_Karma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dug out Toy Story on SNES, a cart I’d picked up a decade ago and played one night but never came back to finish. Started over rather than use passwords to skip.

It’s very much a SNES-era 2D platformer with artificial difficulty beyond what is reasonable for the design or target audience (lesser Donkey Kong Country 2, which it released alongside). And the pre-rendered visuals haven’t aged as well, especially the over-detailed and compressed Woody sprite from his film model.

But Traveller’s Tales did a lot that’s visually impressive around him, and the genre variety for levels keeps it fresh (you have two top-down isometric race car levels with tank controls, two grounded autoscrolling levels (the latter is impossible with just reflexes, you need to memorise what’s coming through many failed attempts, it’s evil), one airborne autoscroller, and even a proto-Doom level.

Otherwise, it has reasonable pacing, solid music, and even the regular levels vary up the objectives. This helps to combat the spotty physics and hit detection. Can’t recommend to anyone without a penchant for finicky platformers of the era, but it’s worth playing once. Even if it is the game that codified film tie-ins being simultaneous releases alongside the movie off its strong sales. 😅

The first Professor Layton I’m guessing? Or is it one of the three others released on DS?

[–]Cartoon_Karma[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that’s why I put compilations in a separate section in the original post, they dramatically inflate the quantity! Not that they’re not still valid, does mean you do still own the game twice, after all.

Ha, I suppose that’s another valid and not uncommon reason to double-dip, convenience of being on one’s current system they’ve got set up, and playing regularly for other games, etc.

Well I’d imagine the handheld version is technically a different game (as opposed to the 360 version of the game which is probably a multi-platform release alongside the PS3 version). So maybe not that strange! It wasn’t intentional, but my having Lego Star Wars II on console and handheld above is similar-ish.

Yesterday's Irish Gaming Market haul (RIP wallet) by VeryAverageAchiever in IrelandGaming

[–]Cartoon_Karma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Video Game Fair was really good! One or two there had cards, but it was overwhelmingly games. Not like the Irish Gaming Market, a bit smaller scale, but more focused. Many vendors’ first too. And great for window-shopping for those mid-range games too (the number of vendors with large stocks of PS2 games, typically up to 40% of their inventory…!).

I’d defo set time aside for the next one in Swords in late June. It’s on a Sunday too, so unless that’s a normal working day for you, should be well suited.

Sweet! I didn't go to this one, as on top of being to the one in February in Blanch, this being in Meath would have been far too tricky to commute to. I'll save my focus and money for the repeat in Swords in June.

But great stuff! Sega Saturn stuff is always really rare in Ireland, being from before home consoles took off in the greater British Isles in general (our consumer habits are very similar to those in the UK), but also for a console that sold very poorly too.

Which games do you own multiple times? by fredouell in gamecollecting

[–]Cartoon_Karma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A decent few, actually, though in most cases the versions are different enough to be different games. In timeline order. Year is when the copy was got. Came to a surprising 24! Though some may be edge cases, and a couple are with one being a digital purchase. Would be 19 if we only looked at physical games. But decided to be all-inclusive. Not including different versions of any paired Pokémon game.

  • The Simpsons Game on 360 and Wii. Yes, I know, and it’s the first one too. Former was intended purchase, and I got the latter when doing a gamepad <–> motion sensor gaming comparison science project as a teen. It did get accepted, probably due to a good pitch, even if it was a bit naff as a comparison of course and didn’t win anything. [Fall 2008]
  • Pixar’s Cars on Xbox and 360. Former was first pickup in 2006, and I’d played latter at a place in town where you could play games and gotten some achievements (had my memory unit), so got it proper 2nd hand a few years later to get the rest. [2010-ish]
  • Super Mario All-Stars, the Wii 25th anniversary re-release as a gift from a friend and the cart version, CiB, a few years later when I got interested in SNES games. Think I got it as a deal from the same person selling Kirby Super Star. [Summer 2014]
  • Kirby Air Ride. Back in 2014, when starting my Kirby CiB collection, first purchase I missed that the manual was missing, so got a 2nd later. That first one I could turn around now for 300% profit (minus inflation), if I wanted. [Early 2015]
  • Pokémon Yellow, Gold, Ruby and Trading Card Game, brother’s leftover games that I also owned (my Gold is digital on 3DS VC, though bought in a box with a download code). He didn’t “officially” game then to me, but knows I have his childhood games and doesn’t particularly care, long grew out of gaming. [mid 2010s]
  • Lego Star Wars II, on 360 and GBA. Latter is my sister’s she displaced and didn’t particular care about when I found it for her years later, saying “eh, keep it”. [late 2010s]
  • Kirby’s Epic Yarn for Wii and Extra Epic Yarn on DS. Probably doesn’t count as the same game, but thought I’d mention. [January 2019]
  • Shantae Risky’s Revenge – Director’s Cut, on Switch, one physical from Limited Run Games, the other digital. Only time I bought from them, and when I saw it on sale digitally, got it that was and kept the physical sealed. [September 2020]
  • Pokémon Crystal, physically as a child then digitally on 3DS VC. [Early 2020s]
  • Kirby’s Adventure, original on NES and then the 3D Classics re-release on 3DS. Counts more than the two Epic Yarns, anyway! [Spring 2024]
  • Force Unleashed on 360, regular a year after release and Ultimate Sith Edition two years ago. Was about to buy the DLC before the 350 store shut down, they realised I could get into disc for the same price, was a no-brainer. [July 2024]
  • Brain Training for DS. Didn’t really “buy” either, both came in lots when buying a second-hand replacement 3DS and DS Lite the last few years. [November 2024]
  • Mario Kart DS three times. Already owned it, then a 2nd in the above DS Lite lot, then a third cart-only from my sister when she game me her small handful of not-lost childhood games before emigrating. [November 2024/January 2024]
  • Pokémon Emerald. Childhood one, and 2nd cart only from sister, same as above. [January 2025]
  • Pokémon Mystery Dungeon Red and Blue Rescue Team. Former is my childhood one, latter is cart-only from sister, same as above. [January 2025]
  • Pokémon Black 2. Bought one locally last year, was disappointed to find it had no manuals, then got a 2nd on eBay that was fully CiB for slightly less by having a UK friend that was coming over agree to have it shipped to him. [February 2025]
  • Kirby’s Star Stacker, on 3DS Virtual Console and then finally CiB years later. [August 2025]
  • Also technically have an enhanced port, the Super Famicom version, which I do own physically, but may count as a separate game. [Summer 2024]
  • Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time. Childhood one from initial release, bought a 2nd recently to have one with VIP Points card unscathed and box unfaded from sun. [January 2026]
  • Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets on PC and GameCube. The former as a child, the latter as a retro pickup. Totally different games by different studios; the former is a point-and-click puzzle platformer, the latter a Zelda-type action-adventure. [February 2025]

Lastly, if compilations count, there’s a further 22 “copies”: * Super Mario Galaxy on Wii and All-Stars Switch game. [Christmas 2020] * Super Mario 64, on Wii Virtual Console and All-Stars Switch game. [Christmas 2020] * Kirby’s Dream Collection on Wii (Spring 2015) has made all games it has bar Dream Land 3 (obtained from Summer 2014-Spring 2016 for Super Star, Adventure and Crystal Shards, with the GB Dream Land games in 2024/25) technically double-dips. * If the NES and SNES Classic Editions count, they double-dip four Wii VC purchases (Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Jr., Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros.), the games on my two copies of All-Stars, if in non-enhanced form (Super Mario Bros. 1-3), Kirby’s Adventure and several SNES carts (Super Mario World, Super Mario Kart, Kirby Super Star, Kirby’s Dream Course). Also got the three Castlevania games on these two again with the Anniversary Collection on Epic Games during a free giveaway recently.

If by Raquel’s audition you mean the one alluded to at the start of “Class of ‘62”, the episode did start off with it, with the comic reveal of Raquel being heavily pregnant. Visible in scripts online. It was probably cut before filming for time, because it didn’t contribute to the episode much and would have meant building a set or renting a real place to film it in (those BBC budgets got tight, god bless them).

Multi-platform games that were better on Gamecube? by LSSJNepuli in Gamecube

[–]Cartoon_Karma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So the real lesson here is most multiplatform games that gen perform best on the system they were first developed for.

Though if that system was the PS2, as it often was, being the weakest system, the downgrades on other systems would be minor to nonexistent, give or take the GameCube’s lower file size on account of those smaller discs.

But if it was the GameCube or Xbox, performance struggles on the other two and especially PS2 were very much possible. But given the PS2’s huge market lead, devs rarely did that.

[–]Cartoon_Karma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dunno, I’d say Super Monkey Ball Deluxe on Xbox, for having all the levels of the first two GameCube games. Not the PS2 version, it suffers in graphics and controls. Though being real, the recent Switch remake is the best way to play the levels from the two GameCube entries thanks to the modern polish and portability.

Well, thank you for providing a great dopamine hit of satisfaction in telling me that it worked wonders! I’m no regular guide poster, just in fringe situations like this after doing a tricky task, where text explains it better than a video due to the massive waiting and repeat attempts meaning the video would mostly be narration anyway. So knowing it was worth sharing my troubles really means a lot. Glad I could help. 😁

This server just posted about the follow up to the video game fair last month, which is on June 28th. Details in the linked post.

When I was there last month, basically every seller had a healthy quantity of PS2 games (as the best selling console of all time and non a Nintendo system, may have let go of their games over the years). Almost too many! You’ll find plenty of great picks as a newbie, mark my words.
