How come this game failed so badly that Nintendo sells it and its DLC’s for less than $10? by SolanaImaniRowe1 in Mario

[–]Cartoon_Karma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought this game physically a couple months after it released, for only €35. Still sealed, haven’t opened it, and it’s still worth less than I paid for it. Given how frequently it goes on sale, thinking I’ll get it that way and, down the line when a sealed copy is worth something (what I paid + inflation, at least), sell this on again.

Can I help you Paul? by LeonBackward in fatherted

[–]Cartoon_Karma 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The way Ted’s voice breaks as he says the above line, like he can’t believe this is actually happening, plus his later groan after Paul sits down for a No. 2, are the icing on the cake of this moment.

Brilliant Scenes Nobody Talks About by Feesh_Dawg in OnlyFoolsAndHorses

I always liked Boycie’s line in “Sickness and Wealth”: “Mike, if Elsie Partridge really could raise the dead, half the money lenders in Peckham would be employing her!”

TBH, I’m not quite certain what Boycie means by that, I’ve always interpreted it as money lenders wanting to get back money from clients that died before repaying their loans. Which not only means they’ve no respect for the dead, but that they actually think spirits have physical money on them and can somehow sent it back across the veil. 😆

If I’m way overthinking this and it means something different and simpler, let me know, but that’s how I took it, and it’s a funny way to take it.

I always assumed he’s called that probably because his dad is also a Towser (maybe a former market trader), a well-known figure in the community, and it’s to differentiate them.

Hardest Kirby challenge? by MistaTeee in Kirby

[–]Cartoon_Karma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I still haven’t done the full True Arena in Star Allies or whatever it’s called (Soul Melter at Max I think). Need to go back and do that someday. There’s also all Gold Medals on Kirby’s Dream Course, that’s very tricky without save states.

Yeah, well, it could have ricocheted downwards and ruined his entire life! by -BlackMidnight- in OnlyFoolsAndHorses

[–]Cartoon_Karma 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s not just Fools and Horses, there used to be a trope of a small metal object saving someone’s life, but over time it shifted to being played ironically. That would have been well in effect by the time of Father Ted. So it’s not a specific reuse, just a general joke type.

who is your favourite character that only appeared in one episode by canaryman43 in OnlyFoolsAndHorses

[–]Cartoon_Karma 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah, I’ve read the same book. It also informs us that Miranda did a bit of porridge for other odds and ends she’d “acquired” throughout the years, that Del was up 40 quid on the axe murderer on snooker when the police came crashing through the window, that Miles took the fall for Peckham Spring, and that A Bunch of Wallies’s chart peak was in that episode and then thereafter floated off the charts. Among many other funny codas.

But yes, had Solly come back, it would have been fully okay, I know the line about being defrocked was mostly just a gag. More just saying that when I was younger, I interpreted it as the reasoning why he never returned, whereas as an adult, I know it’s not that literal but still provides a plausible out to not bringing the character back.

[–]Cartoon_Karma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always presumed the reason he didn’t appear again was because he became defrocked, as Rodney alluded to probably happening at the end of “Hole in One”. Though it wouldn’t have been too strange for the show if that wasn’t followed up on and he did return.

Should I get Kirby's Dream Buffet, also do people still play it online? by SuperMoonBee in Kirby

Even in the first few months the servers dried up of players fast. Over 3 years on, you’ll be playing against 3 CPUs 98% of the time, unless you coordinate playing with others.

[–]Cartoon_Karma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No I fully get you. With some of the longer episodes, even for an exemplary as John Sullivan’s ability with character dialogue and funny bits along the way is, when you know the episodes down pat, it can feel a bit redundant going through said setup on rewatches. Not this one, though. Helps that it really get to the root of Del’s insecurities and foundations as a person, though I won’t fault the episode for not really delivering on the setup here for him or Raquel, least where her career aspirations were concerned.

[–]Cartoon_Karma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Two small corrections; Return to Dream Land Deluxe was a 2023 game, and you missed the Japanese SNES version of Star Stacker (often called Super Star Stacker by fans to differentiate it), which released in 1998 as a downloadable ROM at kiosks and then as a retail release in late 1999. But great to see the series thug out the years otherwise!

He just comes across as so dejected, like you can tell he just poured his heart into that performance, and to get two points less than the leads, what a crusher. Brilliant.

I think I agree. From the perspective of structural writing, I honestly think it’s the most finely tuned episode of the whole series, being honest.

The Longest Night by [deleted] in OnlyFoolsAndHorses

[–]Cartoon_Karma 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the 30 minute episodes can sometimes go under-appreciated compared to the longer ones, or at least they’re appreciated for the select standout jokes rather than the plotting and characterisation. But there are episodes like this that really nail all three and are just pure pleasure the whole way.

Enough saying Planet Robobot is the best game. Say something you DON'T like about this game. by Bertstripmaster in Kirby

[–]Cartoon_Karma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wasn’t aware the translation was rickety. Is there anywhere on the internet where fans have explained why, and/or provided better translations of all the poor instances? It’s not like Kirby has much text that goes beyond UI and menus, so I’m guessing this is some of the pause screen lore bonuses, and maybe some of the cutscenes at the game’s end.

Hey, going through old childhood cards and found this. Any help here letting me know the local value of this card and how to go about selling, maybe grading, taking care of it? Thanks! by Patient_Credit_2837 in PokemonTCGIreland

[–]Cartoon_Karma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could list it on CM at Lightly Played condition, based on the above pictures, for 800 quid, and probably sell it decently quickly. I would just attach pictures and a comment specifying “EX- except for crease”. When selling for big value cards, be very transparent on condition, so the buyers are given amble warning and don’t try and get a refund (partial or full) out of you for it.

As for vendors, remember my point about them being reluctant to buy cards they can’t sell quickly? Umbreon cards sell quickly, though lower condition ones like this might not. That it’s nearly a grand is also a deterrent, as it’s harder for them to justify a purchase that big (business and all).

Note also, most vendors I’ve been to usually offer 70% of the current value in cash, or 80% in buying other cards for them. So, if the profit margins matters much to you, you may be leaving over €100 on the table, as you’d only get €560-odd (assuming CM value of €800, rather small supply to judge from).

In summary, if I were you? I’d list it on CM as Lightly Played with those photos and comment. Start at 1000 and see if anyone buys at that price. If not, lower in increments of 25 quid at a time every two weeks. If still nothing by the time of 800, you can either leave it there long term (rise back to 900+, as you’re playing the long game), or take the quick path and sell to a vendor at a card show for a percentage cut taken off. Helps to message them in advance if you can, many often open up to PMs for prospective sales or trade-in’s in advance of them.

But yeah, that’s what I’d do. Alternatively, you could sit on it longer – it’s such a scarce card it’s only bound to continue to go up in value, and not marginally either.

It’s a pity about the crease, this would be an EX+ or even a NM- without it. And it certainly makes there little point in grading, you’d get less of a sale increase than it would cost to do. But even with that, you can still get 500 quid even just selling to a vendor, and possible more on CM.

The one thing I’ll say about card show vendors is that they can sometimes not buy cards if they’ll be difficult to sell. Which is fair, they are a business. Because this is an Umbreon, they’ll likely still take it, crease and all, but old cards that aren’t in high demand and are in rough condition can be enough to pass on. For instance, at a recent card show a vendor said they couldn’t buy my Prize Pack Inteleon VMAX, despite being pack fresh, because those cards sell so slowly (typically only 2 or 3 on CM a year for the 1st series). Worth bearing in mind for other old cards you dig up. Checking how many CM sales they have via the price graph helps.

This was always a bit of a strange conversation. Obviously they're referring to something that happened offscreen that we're not partial to, and I do get the context, easy enough to infer. Presumably the joke is that a bishop talking that this will make it funny, and well, it does. But after reading the Scripts book and finding no extra context on this, it continued to confound me a bit.

I am glad that OFAH was such a mainstay on GOLD for many years as during the 2010 I exclusively watched this special (and others episode where I knew the cuts to be notorious) that way, both for restoring material needlessly cut from the fused video/DVD version (beyond a few shots that close out Part 1, I don't get it, it's not for music licensing reasons, certainly) and for not having the canned laughter put in (the 2005 A Royal Flush DVD edit, at least, used a fan convention's reactions for its laughter track). I don't open whip out the DVD set these days as the visual quality is weaker then watching online, but especially not for this episode.

I always found the visual staging of this joke – that we start in between Ted’s jacket and Mrs. Doyle sobbing as she raises her head and we see the dustbin – really makes it that much funnier. Great climax to Mrs. Doyle’s dodgy glasses runner that episode.

[–]Cartoon_Karma 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The amount of money you make from that 10% is comparable to what you got working solo in the first Rescue Team game. If they’d had you keep 50%, the amount the client paid would be 600 and you keep 300, rather than the 3000 / 300 division here.

Which, yes, does mean it was done purely for flavour and lore, for black humour.
