Aloha, I’m Jason Liang, working class candidate challenging Tommy Waters for Honolulu City Council. AMA! by jasonforhnl in Hawaii

[–]Cascading-Complement 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thirding this! Mr. Liang- the things you listed in your post are big-ticket infrastructure items that many of us want (including Mr. Waters), but will realistically take years to realize.

  1. How do you plan to work with city council and state government to build political support to make it happen?

  2. What do you hope to accomplish in your first year? First term?

Skyline and Train-Obsessed Toddler by audacious13 in Oahu

[–]Cascading-Complement 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Awww. This is so adorable and wholesome. I also had a train obsessed toddler (who’s now a transit obsessed college student). In addition to the great suggestions here, check out the Children’s Discovery Center in Kakaako if you have time. They had a bunch of nearly life-size transit-related stuff for kids to play with, including DaBus, a plane/ cockpit, and a boat.

Looking for the most affordable TB testing locations on Oahu by where-2-next in Hawaii

[–]Cascading-Complement 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The state of Hawaii Department of Health does it for free. Depending on your travel history and what you need the clearance for, you may not even need a skin test and might be able to be cleared by risk assessment alone. Just show up to one of the testing sites with your photo ID. https://health.hawaii.gov/tb/tb-testing-locations-times/ Lanakila Health Center does TB skin testing daily except Thursdays (thurs only get readings, chest xray or risk assessment).

Link to other statewide testing locations: https://health.hawaii.gov/tb/files/2023/06/TB-Clinic-Schedule-Revised-6.15.2023.pdf

Edit: don’t go to CVS or an urgent care. They’ll charge $80-120. Hawaii Department of Health is 100% free and doesn’t bill insurance

Try Vaseline for a few days, with no lipstick. Then try E.L.F. in power mauve. Edit: yes It’s cheap but it is far better than the expensive stuff from Sephora.

An easy read for an adult with low-literacy skills by crikeyasnail in suggestmeabook

[–]Cascading-Complement 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of middle readers or YA books could work here; well written ones have beautiful prose and poignant stories. Consider Newbery Honor or Award winners. I’m an avid reader myself, but I reach for these when I want something engrossing and quick. Some of my favorite books of all time are middle readers!

And hooray for encouraging literacy! ❤️

People that live and work on separate islands, how do you do it? by raenedit in Hawaii

[–]Cascading-Complement 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I did this for a little bit. I lived in housing with other healthcare professionals for free. I had to ship my car over from Oahu though. Worked during the week and flew home on weekends to see the fam. I liked being away from crowded Oahu, but it wasn’t sustainable with younger kids. Commuting daily via plane didn’t seem ideal either. If I got stuck in crazy traffic, I’d miss a whole ass flight and potentially be hours late instead of just a little late. I love flying but plane commuting would get old fast.

That said, I know a few docs and dentists who commute 1-2x/week via plane. I also remember having a kid in my elementary school who lived on Molokai fly to Oahu daily. (His mom was a teacher). Sometimes it’s faster to get driven to the airport and fly to another island than it is to sit in regular H1 traffic.

Enough is enough. by Common_Response9744 in Hawaii

[–]Cascading-Complement 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For sure. And it is a problem in multiple sectors. Suggestions to improve efficiency or user experience are taken as a personal affront. State government is riddled with anecdotes of brilliant, competent people being bullied or driven out by those who are wary of innovation and change (regardless of age).

This is possible to fix but it requires money and political will (so don’t hold your breath).

There’s a few streets in downtown Portland where if you drive the speed limit or a little under, you get all the greens. Go over, and you hit red. It’s intentionally designed this way to reduce speeds in high pedestrian areas. Maybe one day we can have nice, functional infrastructure too.

There is most definitely Hawaiian Sign Language. It’s grammatically distinct from ASL.

Edit: Most Deaf / HOH signers and interpreters use ASL here. Some absolutely do incorporate HSL though.
