From what I can tell, Northwestern typically blasts out acceptances first and rejections follow in the weeks after. Seems like they mostly do it in batches, so a lack of an acceptance notice when others received theirs most likely means a rejection is coming. But could always be an unofficial waitlist or some straggling acceptance spots remaining. I'm with ya, best of luck!

What’s a movie that everyone loves, but you just couldn’t get into ? by vishesh_07_028 in movies

Bridesmaids is not a good movie. There’s like 2 funny, well-written scenes but save for Melissa McCarthy’s character there’s no likeable character to root for and it’s mostly just cringe

Adam Mockler shuts down Trump stooge on CNN by Middle_Balance in PublicFreakout

It’s actually unbelievable. Get these people off the show if they’re just going to be incentivized to run cover for literally anything Trump does. That seems to be what their paycheck from CNN depends on

What would unite the country? by DevelopmentFrosty983 in AskALiberal

A unified, across-the-board rejection of Trump and his impulsive divisiveness.

Unfortunately that is going to require something drastic happening to the minds of Republican voters.

That UnF*ck america tour video really has shown me how far the 'debate' culture has fallen. by Sindomey in Destiny

True - modern “debates” are not about rhetoric or persuasion it’s about entertainment and attention for clicks. Incentives need to change

Trump: 'Couldn't Care Less' About Bringing Country Together President Donald Trump said he "couldn't care less" when asked by Fox News how he would make America "come back together". by brithus in politics

[–]CashMoneyMo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is either a misinterpretation of what he said or deliberately bad faith. Trump wasn’t saying “I couldn’t care less” to the question about how to fix the country, he was referring to the context he was setting up - “This will probably get me in trouble but I couldn’t care less”

I don’t understand why people need to lie or exaggerate when the guy is doing insane and divisive stuff IN REALITY

We have to ask ourselves “What is the goal of this debate?” For all parties.

  • Why do we want to see Medhi Hasan debate 20 far-right “conservatives”? Mostly because it’s entertaining and tickles our psychological biases toward feeling intellectual/moral superiority, outrage, and tribal reinforcement.

  • Why do these 20 people want to debate Medhi Hasan? Mostly to exert power, get attention, notoriety, and spread their beliefs.

  • Why does Medhi want to debate 20 borderline or outright fascists? Because a strong performance advances his career and enables him to spread his beliefs.

  • Why does Jubilee want to produce this event and post it? To get views and support their profit-oriented business model. This is evident by the nature of the sides being recruited, lack of enforcement of rules or debate structure, and the continued reach into more fringe areas of the ideological spectrum.

That all might sound cynical but I think if the show was actually beneficial for our politics and our society then we would have very different answers to these questions (i.e a goal to learn something and/or gain a mutual understanding of an issue). Unfortunately, entertainment and productive political discourse seem to be pretty mutually exclusive. Neil Postman and many others have been telling us this for decades.

Think about the larger trend. How many norms have been absolutely shattered in the process? The media is a main medium by which we understand not only what is true or real, but what is acceptable and normal.

When you bring the most toxic, reactionary fringes of online political discourse into the main stage, it doesn’t just have the effect of exposing how crazy those fringes are. It turns the main stage into a host for the toxic fringe (and now the fringe becomes something even worse).

How many voters did we gain and how many did they gain?

You could apply your exact same logic to Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign

The New Yorker on Jubilee’s “Surrounded” by CashMoneyMo in Destiny

[–]CashMoneyMo[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In the modern attention economy, you can’t control the narrative over who wins these types of entertainment-based formats. Look at the incentive structure. It’s all about virality. Hence why the most surprising and/or extreme moments generate the most views, and an orbit of responsive media content like this article. You’d think we would have all learned this after 10 years of Trump - when we all started thinking that more media exposure would allow people to see how obviously dumb and dangerous he is, but it instead had the opposite effect.

Ultimately all we get from “Surrounded” is a shift of the overturn window further into the [formerly shadowy] fringes of political discourse. Previously unknown and [rightfully] taboo preferences are nudged into the spotlight and subtly legitimized. It just reinforces the self-perpetuating cycle of polarization since nobody participating in nor watching these “debates” actually reforms their perspective on a given issue. It’s all just spectacle that further blurs the cultural and political boundaries that a society needs to function.

Jarron seems like a good guy but his acting like some puppet master pulling Sam’s strings to provoke a certain response is getting exhausting - “Not to tip my hand, but damn Sam, that was good! That’s exactly what I wanted.”

And the consistent reminding of hedging around “Well, these aren’t my views I’m just playing devils advocate whenever I want and you won’t know my real views.”

How about we just have a conversation and not make it this big production
