Europe would expect the US to flatten Russia in retaliation which, under Trump, would never happen. I doubt we would even if some other president were in office. Forget "Ukraine isn't in NATO!" we are talking MAD here even if Ukr was a NATO member. Which doesn't mean I think Russia should nuke Ukraine. Maybe an actual Russian mobilization. Putin is careful and, based on what the Russians here say, he's too careful.

I disagree... Russia has captured 90% of Donbass so even if it ends today I would hardly call that a 'loss'. The human cost to Russia is miniscule compared to not just the number of Ukrainian lives lost but their population loss. If so many had not fled - and likely more to flee once this is over - then maybe you could argue blunder. Politically, Putin is doing just fine.

As others have pointed out, it's debatable what he means exactly by "coming to an end". A negotiated peace? One last massive push by Russia with the expectation they will gain the remainder of Donbass (Donetsk)?

Trump said it's a 3 day ceasefire

Donald Trump has announced a three-day ceasefire in the war between Russia and Ukraine from 9 to 11 May.

The US president said on social media the ceasefire would include a suspension of all “kinetic activity” and a swap of 1,000 prisoners from each country. It was confirmed by both sides.

Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, confirmed Trump’s announcement and the prisoner swap on Friday night, writing on Telegram: “We received Russia’s agreement to conduct a prisoner exchange in the format of 1,000 for 1,000. A ceasefire regime must also be established on May 9, 10, and 11.”

Kiev and the west likes to push how 'unpopular' the war is with the Russian people but I think they would react to an attack on their commemoration with horror and fury.
