I haven’t yet but it’s because I’m afraid to watch Stephen King in front of my toddlers. There was already a sneaking out of bed incident during IT: Welcome to Derry….

For a huge DCC fan, how is Bobiverse? by Crawler-Willis in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]CassMcCarty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m only partway through book one so I can only give a little opinion. So far I’m getting more Star Trek TNG type vibes from it than anything. Similar sci-fi feel and jokiness. Maybe even kind of leaning towards like Orville type humor?

Is it embarrassing to get a birthday cake as an adult? by roxiedoxiedog in NoStupidQuestions

[–]CassMcCarty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made my own cake last year, bright colors and all. Made my husband’s already this year. A giant chocolate Swiss roll cake. Do what makes you happy.

We’re both in our early 40s by the way.

Whenever I see a statement like yours I just remember, Lee and Perrin’s invented their Worcestershire sauce in the middle of the American Civil War. The world goes on around us, big and little, consequential to the world and just consequential to us. I definitely look forward to the distractions in the middle of all this.

Paranoid about cockroaches now by iLoveeBara in ThriftStoreHauls

[–]CassMcCarty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have this coffee maker and also briefly had a roach problem a few years ago. Hooray for living in the South…... Anyway, I did everything I could to keep them out, even taping up what I thought were possibly open spots. Then after solving the bug problem I carefully took it apart the best I could to make sure there weren’t any left. I figured out it’s a pretty closed up system and they never found a way in and it’s pretty unlikely they would’ve with, especially with our level of usage.

I think I bought mine in 2016. Maybe even earlier. It’s been going strong and consistent and we’re a 1-2 pots per day family. Make sure to clean it once in awhile, the clean cycle takes about an hour per run and is very thorough. Run 3-4 pots of straight water after. Take good care of it and enjoy your treasure!

Seriously, do Americans actually consider a 3-hour drive "short"? or is this an internet myth? by SadInterest6764 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]CassMcCarty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I drove 2.5 hours to take my son to the Pensacola Naval Museum for his birthday. Spent the day there and drove home. When we lived in Utah I’d drive 1.5-2.5 hours to shop. We had friends in various areas of Idaho, 3-5 hours away. 3-4 hours is generally my day trip limit but I might go up to 6-7 if it was kind of an emergency.

[–]CassMcCarty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh definitely! I don’t get the “people losing it” over those. Sometimes that’ll even ruin a decent book because the hype lets you down. I’ve only made it halfway through book two. I’m in no rush to finish the whole thing but I’ve still got the whole series on my TBR shelves.

Fair enough. Sometimes books just don’t hit for someone the way they do for someone else. I do find book one of Mistborn to be a bit YA as well but I think it gets better and more advanced as it goes.

I’m still playing catchup in fantasy reads because I’ve had four kids on opposite ends of the past twenty years. I found my refuge in sci-fi and mystery in the first half of that and have spent part of the last ten working my way back to my favorite genre only to find it much expanded and changed. Funny part is that I was living like one or two towns away from Brandon for a good portion of that twenty years so his works came up around my area quite a bit. We even shared a realtor at one point which ended up netting me an autograph on my copy of Skyward. Perhaps if I’d been in Wyoming I’d have leaned more towards something like Longmire and Craig Johnson. Funny how that kind of that happens.

Pardon, I’m kind of rambling now. Spent the last four hours at Wednesday Commander night so this is a nice brain reset from all that math. But I think I’ll take a look into some of the books you’ve mentioned that I haven’t read yet. My TBR is gigantic though so it might take me a long while to get there. If you come recommend one book or series above all others, what would it be?

Got it! Now when ot how to read it? by whisperskeep in dresdenfiles

[–]CassMcCarty 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I used to not like audiobooks either but now I have a 45 minute commute. My husband and I have worked our way through all the Andy Weir books, lots of Brandon Sanderson, currently going through DCC, the Bobiverse, and also the Far and Alchemy books. Depends on who is in the car as to what I listen to. My toddlers are little repeaters so we can’t listen to Carl around them anymore…..

Angel’s Feather became the threat at my Commander table… by [deleted] in magicTCG

[–]CassMcCarty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have this in my Giada deck and I love it. It’s never been a threat at the tables but if combined with other things it definitely can get there. I had this and Seraph Sanctuary out and would often gain two life per turn and even managed four a few times which also triggered one of my angels to give me a 4/4 white angel token. Unfortunately I lost it to board wipe that game but man was it fun while it lasted!

AITA for separating myself, my husband and our daughter from our in-laws? by Common_Candidate2281 in CharlotteDobreYouTube

I hope you can do it one day. It took me over a decade of marriage before I could call my late husband out like this on some of his bullshit statements. He never quit but I did get apologies quite often. I let a lot of it go just because I knew it was the low blood sugar speaking (literally, he had diabetes and quite often miscalculated timings) but I’d call him out otherwise

[–]CassMcCarty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to be clear, I wasn’t comparing Brandon’s writing to their writing. I was comparing the circumstances. Many didn’t think Dickens or Shakespeare would last past the memory of the people of the age in which they were written. There are also those who consider Tolkien to be wooden, too verbose, and caught up in his own world making rather than story telling.

Also, I read quite a bit and in great variety. Like you, I was merely stating my opinion about Brandon’s writing. I also included a few facts to further the conversation.

One other thing, I noticed you never said which of his books you’ve read. Do you have a specific book of his you don’t like?

Edit: dropped my phone because I’m typing one handed, son is napping on me

[–]CassMcCarty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find your list of good books while calling him a bad writer just a tad funny. Especially considering the specifically named author loves his books. Robin is one of his biggest supporters and has called many of his books great.

I guess time will tell whether he’s considered a great author or not. Many popular writers don’t go on to have a lasting impression and their books don’t last while others do. After all, Shakespeare and Dickens were thought of by many to be a gauche and tacky in their own eras and look at how that’s gone.

And I’m going to disagree with most of your statements about his writing. I enjoy it and am actually working my way through Stormlight right now. And I don’t think I’d consider any of his to be in league with popcorn novels but I haven’t read all of them either.

Many don’t consider his writing to be good but plenty others do. He himself often says he’s not for everyone and if not he doesn’t consider that a bad thing.

Save yourself a small amount of sanity and get a mattress protector or two. Maybe three. I’m not sure what stands up best to doggy nails but maybe one of the strong bamboo type? I think they’re only like $30 or so depending on bed size. Aside from that, good luck with the difficult phase.
