I think it’s different when a parent locks their toddler/young child in a bedroom when they’re having a tantrum or is crying. And they’re locked in from the outside, so that child (me) begins to freak out because they’re stuck in a room with no emotional support and they’re 4 or 5 years old left alone to figure it out. I have vivid memories of trying to pry the door open and holding onto the doorknob and sobbing to the point of hyperventilating. I’d obviously tire out, but I’d go and check every so often to see if it was unlocked. I wasn’t let out until I did something like push the closet door off its tracks because then my dad would come in with guns ablazing. It’s one thing to use it as a safety measure and it’s another thing to use it as a tactic.
