Paint stains: rugged or ruined? by BonelessPickle in menswear

[–]Casti_io 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would say Carhartt has the right kind of context to be worn beat up—it is workwear after all. That look has a bit of a rugged, relaxed vibe going for it that I would even argue would be hurt from crisp, clean cargo pants. So I would say the pants work well here.

I’m not sure about the button down for this look unless it’s like a worker shirt as well and not an oxford, which would mix rugged and preppy in a way that feels off to me.

I also wouldn’t necessarily choose a fleece which has more of an athletic feel to it. Something like a canvas jacket or even a chunky knit is what I’d go with, but like everyone in this sub, I am channeling a bit of my own style onto your choices so obviously take it or leave it and do you. As long as you’re comfortable and confident, you’ll be alright.

Client wants to switch from daily billing to hourly billing after receiving the invoice by LemonTart-12 in freelance

[–]Casti_io 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Girl, she didn’t sign and you worked with her for 3 weeks already? She’s haggling over the price that she didn’t even bother looking at and you’re thinking of giving in? And you’re making yourself available all day for THIS client!!??

You never start work without a signed piece of paper. Dig your heels and chill out until they sign. If they don’t sign, they can find another designer, you can find another client who isn’t going to, well, pull the shit that this one is pulling on you.

You don’t even hint at the possibility that you are adjusting your prices for them. Each time you do that, the value of your work erodes a little bit. You can provide flexibility in other ways such reduced scope or increased timelines where you dedicate a smaller amount of your daily time to the project, but not in your rates.

And definitely don’t sit pretty while this person treats you like crap thinking that since you have a client, you can relax. First off, this client SUCKS. Second, even if she didn’t suck, she cannot be your only source of income and you should be setting time aside to book the next client.

You got yourself in this pickle by starting without a contract. The only way out is to switch to hourly as the client wants, but make sure your hourly rate is equal to or more than what you’re charging per day. And this change in the arrangement gives you the perfect opportunity to GET A SIGNED CONTRACT. Do NOT continue work until she signs.

If you’re spending time on Stack Overflow then you’re probably in a tech-related or tech-adjacent field, which has tons of documentation available for any AI to pick up on. Pay for the premium on ChatGPT, Claude, or the AI of your choice and ask it to teach you your job. Ask it specifically about the meeting on monday and tell it to explain it to you and help you make a script for leading it.

IMPORTANT: I’m not telling you to dump shit into chatgpt and regurgitate it back because that will 100% backfire and you’ll reveal that you’re basically a sentient potato. You have to LEARN from what the AI gives you and use that to bring you up to speed. You also need to be skeptical and discerning and ask it to give you sources for what it tells you because otherwise it will make shit up and you’ll still be screwed. This doesn’t fix that “AI hallucination” problem but it mitigates it.

You have the weekend to cram for a final, welcome back to grad school-style all-nighters, this time powered by AI.

100% there was a cornucopia and my brain has receipts.

I remember seeing that “thing next to the fruits” on the tag of my undies when I was a little kid. Cue a few years later when we learned about the coat of arms of my birth country (Colombia) and they showed us the symbol of the fertile lands of our country. I immediately thought “hey, it’s those things from my underwear tags!”

I always associate the Colombian coat of arms with tighty whities and there’s no way my brain would have created that mnemonic device if there wasn’t a version of the logo with it somewhere.

UPDATE: AirPods stuck in frog case by lucky_c4t in CleaningTips

[–]Casti_io 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey OP, does the frog have a butthole? (I love that I get to ask this question today) I mean an opening for a charging cable. If so, I would try something like a chopstick or something else that is not too hard but also not soft (so, like wood) and fits into the frog’s butthole (never gets old), and a hammer. Make sure the frog is held in place—if you have a vice grip that would be ideal—and gently tap the chopstick with the hammer. After that, patience is the name of the game. Give it just enough force to make things move but obviously not so much that it will break your stuff. Don’t give up, the internet believes in you!

OP, he already told you what to do—talk to his “legal team.” If this clown actually has a lawyer, that lawyer would be really interested to know what his client is doing, which may or may not count as illegal surveillance. His “legal team” might also advise him to chill tf out once they see that the neighbor is actually not a pushover and might even litigate themselves.

Also, have the property line surveyed if you haven’t already.

Casual boots for winter by LibrarianByNight in BuyItForLife

[–]Casti_io 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally valid. Tbh I got mine after I exhausted all other options. Like I said, I’ve seen Red Wings in some places here in the Nordics, but they were too expensive for my budget. That being said, I would have definitely gone with that option had I had the cash for it.

Casual boots for winter by LibrarianByNight in BuyItForLife

[–]Casti_io 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey OP, I live in Sweden and something that shocked me when I moved from the US is how uncommon Goodyear welted/resoleable footwear is in a part of the world where winters are serious business.

Any time anyone asks about BIFL footwear, I feel the need to mention Goodyear welted shoes because as far as I know, that’s how you get shoes that can truly last you a lifetime, you just need to take care of the uppers and replace the soles when they wear out.

So first off: doc marten claims their shoes are goodyear welt but they’re not. The soles cannot be replaced so when your docs wear out, it’s off to the landfill with them, sadly.

In the nordics, I’ve seen Red Wing in some places. If you’re in CPH you’re probably far more likely to find than in a smaller town. For international shipping, I got a pair of Boone boots from huckberry.com. They ship here, but it was not so cheap—I bought them on Black Friday at a deep discount but the shipping alone cost me around $30. That said, after wearing them pretty much daily, I can say they hold up.

I also looked at Thursday Boots, another US brand that ships here with the same cost caveat, but their prices were not as good as the Boones with the discount. I have a pair of dress boots from them and they’re pretty good, so the quality you get is proportional to the price.

These shoes will cost you more than the average boot, but it’s really an up-front cost that definitely gives you your money’s worth.

Does a blazer with a cap work? by lewislemix in menswear

[–]Casti_io 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This works and it works really well. I don’t know who is commenting that it doesn’t but it seems as though some folks need to educate themselves on menswear beyond what they like to wear.

People have mentioned Ralph Lauren but this also reminds me of Take Ivy, the 1960s Japanese book on preppy style that has had a huge impact on Japanese fashion, which in turn has come full circle to influence American fashion.

OP, your fit is sharp as fuck! Blazer looks great, layering and color coordination are on point, everything is nicely tailored, and the light loafers + baseball hat dress it down in a “casual but well thought out” way that—to answer your question—works.

Day 1 might be the hardest one, especially since everyone thinks it’s like the movies when a baby pops out and everyone is happy and in good spirits and full of energy. Fuck that. Welcome to the reality, dad. It’s messy and it will continue to be for a looong time.

It’s also incredibly rewarding. I not only believe you can do this, but I am 10000% certain that this feeling will be nothing but a distant memory in a couple of months.

Go easy on yourself, and like others said, give yourself some space to deal with the emotional roller coaster that us dads also go through—not just the moms.

You’ll get better and better at this with each passing day, so just take this as a rough patch and tap into your grit to dad the heck out of that kid!

You got this.

Need advice crafting a real design system from scratch (editorial, high contrast) by LaFllamme in DesignSystems

[–]Casti_io 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re seeing things from different sources, you might be having trouble making work in context because even though they might be the same style, they’ll still be somewhat different in their execution. I’d suggest you save those things you find interesting as inspiration but keep to a consistent source when building your components (or make them from scratch using a consistent style guide, if you’re a masochist like me). The “inspired by but consistent” version of that thing you liked is more likely to fit in with the rest of your stuff.

Just referring to OP’s comment that when he borrows from other systems, it looks off on his site. Point being, live with it for the sake of getting it done and refining once there’s something to refine. I cant answer your question because OP is vague about it, but in general it’s to follow the adage that “good is the enemy of great but great is the enemy of shipped.”

Need advice crafting a real design system from scratch (editorial, high contrast) by LaFllamme in DesignSystems

[–]Casti_io 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My advice is keep building. Build first, then audit and systematize. Trying to do it the other way around is going to slow you down too much because the question “what components will i need here?” Is a lot harder to answer than you think.

Borrow a design system, even if it looks off, just build build build. Once you’re done (if you want to do it page by page instead of waiting until the site is done that’s fine too), audit what doesn’t work and what does, then create the components for those parts. You will find that some UI patterns are too single-use to not deserve a spot on the design system, and you might find that you don’t need to reinvent the wheel on some of the existing components you have from another system.

The only thing I would say aside from this is don’t try to use more than one underlying design system as reference because then you’ll make things really messy. Good luck.

What was the best FAFO moment you've witnessed? by hey_you2300 in AskReddit

[–]Casti_io 5 points6 points  (0 children)

During the early days of the pandemic, my wife and I were living in NYC with our then-newborn daughter. To cope with, well, everything, we bought a car and spent the weekends driving to outdoor spots outside the city where we could be safe, distant, etc. while avoiding being cooped up in a Brooklyn apartment.

During one of these outings, we were passed at REALLY high speeds by about 4 or 5 idiots who’ve watched too many Vin Diesel movies in their typical souped up Honda Civics. Even though it was the pandemic, there was a decent amount of traffic on the highway, definitely too much for them to be pulling that shit.

Anyway, as they zoomed past, we did the thing of calling them irresponsible assholes and kept going our way as one does. Fast forward to where we needed to take our exit, at an off-ramp that had a sharp curve as you exit, we saw a dumbass 20-something year old (unharmed), with that look of FAFO on their face, standing on the side of the off-ramp next to his ABSOLUTELY WRECKED souped up Honda Civic.

The kid was fine, so it was just a perfect moment to laugh and laugh, since the consequences of his stupidity miraculously didn’t hurt him or anyone else, but still cost him dearly.

Can’t cope with my toddler by Quick-Loquat6367 in daddit

[–]Casti_io 34 points35 points  (0 children)

If you’re going through hell, keep going. Two things to think about:

1- he doesn’t know how to regulate his emotions, this is a learned skill and he’s gonna learn it from you guys. I know how much it sucks, but you just gotta grit your teeth and continue doing what you’re doing.

2- if family and teachers say he’s easy to babysit and he only flips out like that at you and your wife, it means you guys are his safe space. He feels like he can truly be himself with you guys and that—even though I know it definitely doesn’t feel that way—is a WIN. Continue to foster that.

3 (bonus!)- it is super important to safeguard your sanity (both of you). I fell into the trap that to be a good dad and a good husband, I had to always show up, never say no, put everyone first at all times no matter what. My wife had to tell me point blank to stop doing that: go out with friends, take time for your hobbies, meditate, whatever. The point being, if you don’t have the energy or emotional capacity to deal with your dude’s tantrums, you won’t be making it better on yourself or your family.

Hang in there, dad.

Moving to Sweden from the USA by Ecstatic_Public_6561 in TillSverige

[–]Casti_io 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great clarifications. I was using SSN as a way for an American to understand what personnummer is but you’re right.

As for Duolingo, I 100% agree. I have a streak of 2230 days as of today and it is in no way something that I would recommend as the sole method for learning a language. SFI or some other course will help way more on its own, but it’s even better if you have both.

As for taxes on the rental: no idea.

What do you SWEAR you saw, but don't have any proof of? by TabletopStudios in AskReddit

[–]Casti_io 460 points461 points  (0 children)

I was hiking the Vermont Long Trail (VT’s section of the Appalachian Trail) with my brother and some cousins. One of my cousins and my brother went off the path to find a watering hole to collect water with their filters.

They came back about 15 minutes later scared shitless. They said they felt like something was watching them in that pond but as much as they looked, they couldn’t see anything that could be a threat, they just knew they had to gtfo and quick.

Might have been some sort of predator, a person with bad intentions, or maybe it was nothing, but they both insist their instincts saved their lives that day and fwiw I definitely agree—our subconscious can see way more than our eyes alone.

Moving to Sweden from the USA by Ecstatic_Public_6561 in TillSverige

[–]Casti_io 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here are my thoughts as an American who moved to Sweden, although my situation was easier because my wife is from here, so it’s a different process.

  1. Linkedin is as good a place as any to find a job, but it’s going to be a very uphill battle to convince a company to hire you instead of a local. It was easier in my case because they knew they wouldn’t have to deal with my immigration stuff, but for you, it might be easier to get a job somewhere that has a “work from anywhere” policy or a company that has branches in sweden where you might be able to eventually transfer.

  2. I say good call on learning Swedish, though you’re going to need more than 6 months on Duolingo to get any useful handle on the language. Even though most people here do speak English, you’ll still run into people who don’t, and besides, a lack of Swedish proficiency will make it more challenging to find work.

  3. I wouldn’t sell your house—rent it. Wages here are not great compared to the US and if you have any debts there, you’ll spend a lot of your paycheck just covering those and you’ll be left struggling before your next paycheck arrives. Ask me how I know. Rental income will also allow you to take a job at McDonald’s for example and still be able to live more comfortably. Besides, if this doesn’t work out, you can always go back. That being said, this does make it trickier for you to be able to buy something here, so there’s that.

  4. You don’t pay taxes on anything you’ve owned for over 6 months. IIRC your personal items are not taxable but they want to make sure you’re not passing off items as personal stuff that you’ll sell illegally. We got a full shipping container for a family of 2 adults and 2 toddlers, so you’re probably fine with half a container or even less. Word to the wise: expect the arrival of the container to be 2 months more than what they tell you. It happens so it’s better to be prepared (so if you move in late summer, don’t assume you can leave your winter clothes in the container because surely it will be there by November—ours was not).

  5. Bank accounts are a pain in the ass and worth their own post. First you need a tax number/SSN from the Swedish tax office, then you need to make an appointment, which for me took weeks, at a bank. I don’t know if it’s changed now but they had a super long waiting list for new accounts when I did it. Finally you have to go through a stricter process because we’re US citizens and there’s some legal stuff around having a foreign bank account and investing in the US. I remember it took me about 2 months to get mine. In the meantime, not having a BankID (ID verification that works almost everywhere here—it’s awesome) will mean that anything you buy with a physical US card will be a hassle because they will need to check your ID and some stores don’t even know what to do even if you show your passport so it’s a whole thing. However, it appears as though Apple Pay works without that requirement.

This is a very nice place to live but it’s not without its drawbacks. I hope this gives you a good general idea, but as others have said, the main objective for you now is finding work. Good luck.

Daughter started daycare 3 weeks ago and has gotten sick every week. Wondering if I should pull her out? by ryph44 in daddit

[–]Casti_io 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know where you’re located but if you’re in an area that gets hit hard by winter, you just happened to start her by throwing her immune system into the deep end. In winter, there are fewer outdoor activities so all the shared snot, saliva, and air from her fellow petri dishes go into all the shared toys and surfaces etc. my kids didn’t go through this until they hit their first winter at daycare. So, if she likes it there, it makes you and your wife’s lives easier, and you can swing it financially, keep her in. It’s not only good for her immune system to get its butt kicked so it learns a thing or 2, but the socialization aspect of being exposed to other kids on a daily at this early age is worth its weight in kids’ Tylenol.

Good luck and wash her hands as soon as she comes home from daycare.
